It's likely that if he makes it to the PS then he gets pickup up later this year and they get nothing for him.

They must think there is a team that will grab him off waivers.

Or maybe they just don't see a role for him here, that could be the case as well.

Why would someone want to give us anything if we are going to put him on the waiver wire?

I don't think it is any secret he is an odd man out at WR.

It doesn't make much since unless they think someone will grab him.

I think the trade talk with Washington is probably bluster or much ado about nothing

I think they 100% want him to be the backup return guy while they develop him to replace Agnew next year

This. They have so much talent they are able to look to the future for WR. Agnew is good as gone next year, and Zay won't be far behind... Over the next 2 seasons they have to replace the best KR in the league and one of the best #3 WR in the league. They've got the talent now, and will be able to replace them both cheaply as long as they find a way to keep them in Jax.

This is it. He takes a year fielding punts and kickoffs in practice and picking Agnew's brain. Likely inactive on Gameday all season, and then if he shows he can field the ball cleanly we cut Agnew next offseason for cap savings to sign Trevor and the rest of the core.
Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Agnew is an UFA after this season.

to rephrase I guess they just won't bring back Agnew so that his cap hit can be used elsewhere.

With our WR depth, there are going to be guys not good enough to make our 53 but good enough for to make another team's 53.

I don't think he has shown enough for us to commit to him being our future returner.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't recall him doing anything special as a returner or receiver.

Yeah that one surprised me, it seemed like he was really showing out in camp. Guess they'll try to bring him back on the practice squad but I kind of doubt he'll clear waivers.

He made some good plays against backups as a receiver - showed good hands fielding punts/kicks. Beat reporters raved about his camp performances.
He clearly took all the returner snaps we saw them give Claybrooks last year as the #2 return guy at this stage, so he seems destined for that role in that regard.

We haven't seen anything otherworldly from the kid - but unlike Jags regimes of recent past, this one seems to actually develop young players.

I'm speculating they'd like to develop this one as a potential replacement to a soon-to-be free agent returner & depth/gadget receiver.

With Garrett Prince being cut, it looks like we could start the season with 3 TEs. Perhaps that opens up a spot for an extra WR.

AP beat reporter Mark Long is speculating the 3 TE start to the season is about leaving a spot for Davon Hamilton and/or Cooper Hodges to return when healthy.

Might be on to something...

I'm all for developing him on the PS, but I don't think he has shown enough to warrant a roster spot.

The back up returner has to be active on game day, and I don't think he is high enough on the depth chart to justify being an active WR.

Could keep 3 TE's and 7 receivers. I say that as a lot of them are the same type....what about keeping 2 big bodies.

Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Jamal Agnew, Zay Jones, Tim Jones, Elijah Cooks, Seth Williams

That makes sense.  Actually, they don't have to start the season with 3 TEs.  As soon as they put Hamilton and Hodges on IR, they can bring back anyone who cleared waivers.

He did nothing during the actual preseason games.

Brandon Scherff is no longer that dude.   Next season I want him gone.
