Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

Still a few days until the season opener so just got a couple of questions to debate about and kill some time.

1- When would you give Lawrence his next contract?

2- Would you make him the highest paid player in the league?

3- Would Lawrence want to be the highest paid player in the league or would he agree a more team friendly deal like Brady/Mahomes and increase his chances of more success?

He's getting paid in the next offseason and if it isn't a record breaking deal it will be close to it

I'm good with all of that

This year's performance will determine if it's a huge deal or a new NFL $$ record

Looking at cap space for next year it looks like they are making the room for his contract. I think we would happily make him the highest paid player, it's just the way QB contracts are now but he genuinely seems to love being here and i don't see it getting ugly like Lamar's in Baltimore.

Herbert is #1 right now with a 5 year, $262.5m deal so about $52.5m a year. I think we would happily beat that (Burrow still needs to sign his next contract) so could be pushing $54m and I'd have no issue with that but can't help but think Lawrence would happily take around $45m and let us keep guys or add in FA.

Let's hope it's not:
(Trevor sees offered number.)

'Yo, dawg, you tryin' to disrespect me?'
'Absolutely not, Trevor. We think this is the best number.'
'Tell you what, dawg, I ain't GOTTA be here. Know'm I'm sayin'? Come back when you got a number that ain't givin' me happy feet.'

Trevor is getting paid ASAP. The longer you wait the price can only go up.

He'll definitely be one of the highest paid. Luckily still have this year to figure that out.

Obviously I'd love Trevor to take a team friendly deal but I'm not gonna blame players for getting as much as they can.

With the Billions bet in Vegas combined with the NFL partnership with gambling... It's questionable.

There were millions lost with that Myles Jack afc championship fumble return robbery.

lost by whom? oddsmakers probably breathed a sigh of relief when the upset special withered.

I dont think we can do anything until this coming offseason, so I'm not rushing things.

Not unless he's breaking serious records and hoisting the Lombardi trophy this Feb.

I don't *think* he's singularly focused on getting paid, but I think something in the vicinity of Herbert will happen. Joey B's deal will tell us how much higher we'll likely be paying. I think he's happy in Duval with the roster/coaches/FO, so I don't see it being a situation like in the past where good players want to get out at any cost. TLaw isn't chasing a paycheck, in other words.

Yeah, with Herbs' deal I can see guys like Burrow and Mahomes looking to top that based on what they've already accomplished, I think in that vicinity is a fair offer to begin the negotiation. Not sure how I didn't recall that he reset the market, though.

The problem is that Burrow is ahead of him. So I guarantee you that Trevor Lawrence's agent is telling him to wait until Burrow signs his deal.

With that said, the salary cap is becoming a thing that most fans and media understand is a limiting factor that will determine whether or not a QB is going to win a Ring. Do you (as a QB or your agent) want to win a ring, or do you want to push the cap and QB salary range? Do you want all the bag or do you want to make a run with your team?

Most teams make the wrong descision and overpay their QB. Looking at you Dallas, Cleveland, Baltimore, Minnesota.

But if you have a really great QB like Burrow, Mahommes, and hopefully Lawrence, then paying that amount will secure the future and then you have to have a really great GM to find talent and a great Head Coach and staff that can develop it.

Quick Edit: We overpaid Bortles which pretty much screwed up everything else on a team that was rising. I should have mentioned that we have been one of the major culprits of terrible salary management and talent determination and acquisition. Hopefully Doug Pederson's hiring last year is changing all of that. Baalke and Pederson look like they are going to be a good combo. So far so good.

My main thing with Trevor's deal is I hope he signs a long term deal like Mahomes. After 4 years of cap increases Mahome's deal is essentially nothing in the grand scheme and he's still getting paid ridiculously well. I hope Baalke offers a similar style deal. Trevor strikes me as the type who would be willing to have a little wiggle on the details like that as opposed to Lamar or Rodgers who just wanted top dollar no matter what

Cool breakdown. From the big play that sparked the home play-off win.

I might be wrong, most likely am, but I like to believe that Trevor values winning pretty high up there with getting paid. He understands that the more he earns, the lower the chance his team can field a victorious team. He will be the highest paid, for a time. But I think the contract will be structured in a way that still enables the team to keep additional top talent.

As gifted and talented as that guy is, the maturity and level-headedness is still what amazes me the most. He sounds like a 15 year vet.

I could see him going into coaching when his playing days are over, but he’ll probably be so filthy rich he may not bother.

He was criticized last year for this same demeanor in press conferences when the losses were piling up.  Some wanted to see more fire out of him.  Some even called him shook.  Winning cures all as they say.

Lawrence says the right things at the right time. I could have swore I saw him take issue though with Kyle Brandt's weak [BLEEP] tier list for AFC QB's. He retweeted the post and said something along the lines of "Games are played on the field" or something like that.

So, I know he says it doesn't get to them, that, they ignore it. But, again, that's what you're supposed to say in front of a camera as a professional athlete. These guys love bulletin board material. These guys love being dogged, doubted and downplayed whether they're on the radar or coming in hot and undetected.

It's normal. It's apart of being a competitor.

I don’t remember comments about his demeanor on press conferences. There were comments about how level headed he was even then.
