1010XL the new flagship home of the Jaguars?

#61

Article in the T-U said that Gator Country (99.9) will simulcast that has a good FM signal that reaches almost as far as WOKV... Jags have had affiliates in Brunswick,, Gainesville,  Lake City along with other areas...  Tally and Savannah coverage has been spotty...  The real question is whether the deal will allow for a change in broadcasters???  Sexton is the worst PBP guy in the league and I hear them all on my Sat Radio...  But he is a Jag employee and they probably have control..

I thought that some time ago (at around the time Vic left) the Jaguars gave up control of broadcasting operations and personnel. Not to say that their opinions don't matter but I believe the broadcasts are controlled by the contract holder and not the team.

WARNING: Longish Explanation follows.

This thread content about radio stations signals is my technical field of work.

Both WOKV and WJXL are 50,000 watt stations, but their classification is quite different.

WOKV  690   is a "Clear Channel" a designation that gives the higest priority from local and regional interference.

WOKV is a true regional frequency.

WJXL   1010 is located on a "Clear Channel" frequency, but is designated a local frequency. Therefore it's signal is restricted to JAX proper.

This is accomplished by the antenna structure at the transmitter site, the more the number of towers, the more direction the signal can be which in turn can restrict the signal to a certain area. The same is true to FM stations.

1010xl is licensed to serve the market of Jacksonville Beach primary and Jacksonville secondary. It was not meant to cover Baker, Volusia or outlying counties. That is why at night their signal dissappers and fades out the further you get from JAX.

It is a local hometown (JAX Beach) radio station.

WOKV 690 as a regional frequency was meant to have coverage up and down the coast and inland.

After Hurricane HUGO people in Charleston tuned to 690 JAX for local info during the daytime until local stations got on the air.

WOKV is a much stronger signal with regional reach and the right choice for a flagship station regardless of their choice of programming.

WFAN as TMD mentions is a protected clear channel station that was meant to have maximun day and night coverage.

That is why to this day there are certain stations that have near continental coverage at night. WWL, WLS, WSB,KMOX, KAAY,WCBS,WABC. This was all decided in the 1920-1930s when radio was the major source of information and entertainmemt programming. You tuned to the Big City station for Network programming and the local station for swap shop.

Nice, good read here.

Question. What would cause the loss or fade of the signal at night as opposed to during the day?

You don't get 1010 or 92.5? I live in GC too and get them just fine. (Live in Lake Asbury, but I have been all over GC and never have a problem getting either station.

Here is the T-U article regarding the change.

99.9 on the FM side.

Also interesting. TV switching from 47 to WJXT 4 "The Local Station".

On the TV side, I think it is very good news. Not a huge Kouvaris fan but I always think WJXT puts out a quality product, especially considering they have no network affiliation. CBS47 always comes across as very low rent. And let's be honest, they have fudged up quite a few things in the past. Playing Cheers instead of a preseason game. Cutting off a Jaguar regular season game in the second half. Blaming it on national CBS when it was actually their error. The whole Steve Wrigley/Tebow incident. A definite upgrade. Maybe the End Zone will return.

It's interesting, but going to an all sports station for the AM broadcasts does make sense.  Still, the signal is the issue.  When WOKV took over the old Rock 105 104.5 on the dial, they acquired the most powerful FM signal in the region.  That's a footprint that broadcasts up to Brunswick, west of Lake City, and south to Daytona.  99.9 should give a decent signal locally, but they won't be as broadly heard.  It's a big loss for WOKV.

On the TV side, bravo!  CBS47 was truly minor league when it came to the quality and reliability of the preseason game broadcasts.  I think WJXT will do a better job of putting a quality product out there.  But, now we have to deal with Sam Kouvaris.

I wonder what this means for Sexton, Lageman, and Boselli?  It sounds like they will be evaluated, and a determination will be made on the broadcast team between the team and the media partners.  Throw a truckload of money at local boy, Gene Deckerhoff to lure him away from Tampa, and let's move on.

I think by law they must decrease their strength at night.

I can deal with his annoying self if it means we'll actually get to see a whole game on tv without it going out or switching in the middle of it to Cheers or something!!

Correct. The signals travel further because of changes in the ionosphere at night. This causes interference with other AM signals, so the FCC requires stations to dial back their signals at night to prevent this from occurring.

Quote:Frangie is the one that is hardest to enjoy for me as well. I have always liked Ballou, he'd be a great guy just to hang out with and watch some games with. Dempsey is very knowledgeable, and very well spoken. I have liked "SFR", now "The Drill" (I know they had to change the name, but still not a fan of the choice). Robo Tiger is one of my favorites.

I don't mind XL Primetime either. I like that I can listen to local sports radio all day. Don't want or need national personally.

I prefer the local stuff though I do listen in to Dan Patrick from time to time.
