Caldwell Not Shopping Current Players....

#81

Quote:lol.....no worries, theres precedent now for Caldwell eating most of the existing contract remaining....
He will have to eat 2.8mil after this season when we cut him but its a lot better than paying him 16.5 mil over the next 2 because that is what he would make.

Quote:We would give Lewis to a team if they would take him so we don't have to eat that 2.8 mil. in dead money next year.  Its funny if anyone thinks a team would take Lewis on that huge contract he has.

again....Caldwell just started precedent (with the Monroe deal) that we'll eat most of the money in remaining contracts (when traded)...

Quote:I am sure the Jaguars phone is ringing off the hook with teams wanting the pick up that 6 millions that Lewis is owed next year.
It will be 8.25 mil. I guess we could tell the team we will eat the signing bonus so we get an extra pick but still no team will give Lewis 6.7 mil.

We could just cut him if we don't want to eat that dead money next year.  Trading him just saves us his prorated salary for this year and of course and compensation we get in return.

When the trade was first announced I thought for sure we would be receiving at least a first and a second... come to find out.....

....still don't know why we just didn't cut him last offseason.....all we would have had to pay was the remaining signing bonus and not the 6.7 MIL.... He was actually worth so far below that salary it was ridiculous.

Caldwell is coming off as not the sharpest GM in the office.

Lewis is owed 16.5 mil. over the next 2 years not counting this year, Caldwell isn't gonna eat that.  Way more than what Monroe was owed.

Yeah, they were gonna give that for 12 guaranteed games. Comical. If you truly thought that then there is no discussing football with you because you are clueless.

You know Monroe is a very good player......errr, well that is you knew that BEFORE the Jags decided to trade him....

Now you say the above since he's gone....

No. Saying someone is the (arguably) third best asset on this roster doesn't mean much of anything. Caldwell has already turned over half the roster from last year. He's likely to turn over half of the remaining by next spring. He has little reason to keep these guys whose contracts are expiring.

I don't get it.  How are we eating most of the money remaining in his contract?  We don't pay 1 penny more than we already have to him.

yes you do have to eat the dead money if you cut him, it will be 2.8 mil at the end of the year

The team that trades a player away always eats the signing bonus.  It's already been paid.

He's owed 16.5 in bonus or salary???......because only the signing bonus is "guaranteed". The other money (salary) is not owed to Marcedes, once he's cut.

Because his salary is 2.5 mil cheaper this year than it will be next year and Caldwell probably thought our oline would be better than it is and he wanted to give Blaine as many weapons as he could to see what he could do with it.  Now, next year his cap hit jumps up 2.5 mil and he has been hurt this year so he will be gone.

No, cutting him this year means we could choose to pay the remaining 2.8 million dollars on this year's salary cap, which we have the room for if we cut him or split it 1.4 million this year and 1.4 million next year.  If we cut him after the season the full 2.8 goes onto next years cap.

I was hopeful for a 2nd but figured we at least got a 3rd plus later round pick

Quote: Laughing a week ago everyone on this board figured Monroe to be a key part of this new rebuild. Everyone agreed Monroe was a top 10 LT (I'd call that a franchise Tackle) and the problem was in the center of the line!

He's traded and all of the sudden I've seen "Monroe didn't want to be here" "Monroe wasn't that good anyways, only average" and now "No way was he a franchise LT" oh and the normal "Well he was part of a team that went 2-20 so he must suck"

Yea let's downplay Monroe so we're not as upset about the fleecing our shiny new GM just took Laughing

Monroe was a good player.  Franchise LT.

I still don't think our GM got 'fleeced'.  It's a goodwill trade of a player we didn't plan on retaining.  Compensation wasn't great, but again -- how are we to know what his trade value was?

You say you'd have given a 2nd Round pick for Eugene Monroe if you were a team with a need at LT?  Given his contract situation.

Would you be upset if say... we didn't have Luke Joeckel and  Caldwell traded a 2nd + 4th Round pick for Trent Williams? Also assume he was going to be a free agent at the end of the year. How about Nate Solder? Jared Veldheer?

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

I know the signing bonus is the guaranteed what the teams have to eat if you cut them.  The signing bonus left for the next 2 years is what will be the dead money.

You are waisting your keystrokes. TMD won't be bothered to do the research required to intelligently discuss this with you.

Exactly, I didn't say we had to pay it to him the day we cut him.
