Blake Bortles Qb Ucf

(This post was last modified: 02-23-2014, 09:28 AM by KYjaggy.)

Quote:Give Bortles the exact size and frame of Manziel, and he likely wouldn't even be drafted this year.

In other words, nothing Bortles has ever done anything on a football field warrants him being a top QB draft pick, in the line of Newton, Luck, etc.

Sure, he's a good quarterback, but TRUST ME. If Bortles was 5'11, he'd be undraftable. It's all his 'NFL size' and 'NFL weight', and because of that size, his quote-unquote 'potential'. Heard the exact same thing the year we drafted Gabbert. Do not want. Gimme Johnny or Teddy please.
But he isn't Manziel's size. He's half a foot taller and that matters. He also has some very good tape. This play linked right now is better than any play Manziel ever made. He feels the pass rush (which Manziel doesn't), he stays calm (Manziel...LOL), he steps up in the pocket (which Manziel never does), and he delivers pinpoint ball placement 30 yards downfield on the sideline. That play right there is what will make the NFL drool, not a play of JFF scrambling out of a perfect pocket and heaving up a jump ball to Mike Evans...and it happened right in Bill O'Briens face no less.

I like teddy and possibly Carr more than Manziel, but here's my opinion.

What does sensing pressure matter if you rarely get sacked?

What does staying calm matter if you can have success again and again?

What does stepping up matter if your spatial awareness is so great (can't argue thats a skill of his) that you know where the defense is and how to avoid them?

That's the thing with Manziel. His entire game, from his height to his playing style, defies the norm but has been so successful.

The question is whether it will carry over.

I think his problem in the NFL is that teams wont allow a lot of that.  We saw LSU and Mizzou expose him by forcing him to stay in the pocket.  He takes advantage of teams that allow him to scramble and wait for his WRs to get open.  Contain him in the pocket, give him a variety of looks in the secondary and he isnt Johnny Football anymore.

Yep, that's the burning question. It's easy to look at the Bortles play I linked and say yeah, that will translate to NFL success very well. More than half of what you watch Manziel do you have to ask, "Is that going to work if it's (insert any bigger/stronger/faster/more displined NFL pass rusher here) instead of (insert 90% of the defenders that will be selling cars and fries in two years that Manziel has faced thus far)."

It's a very tough question, and one that I sure as heck don't want to gamble a top pick and also my job on if I'm a GM.

I agree its a huge risk. But also has the biggest payoff of any guyin the draft if it pans out. The skills that he has, the spatial awareness, the throwing platforms, arm talent and accuracy, these things can't really be taught. If you teach him everything else, which would obviously be a task, you have something special.

Edit: you can't really say that about his competition. He was in the SEC, they'll probably be drafted for depth if nothing else.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley had to shake his hand.

You can't not like the guy.  Wish he'd fall to us in the 2nd.

Still doesn't change the fact that he is a reach at #3 and likely will be overdrafted by one of the desperate organizations of the browns and raiders.

We will take Teddy B. I'm calling it.

I dont think Dave is going to be confident enough to tie his career to any of these QB's, atleast not with a 1st rounder.  We keep hearing them mention staying the course and seeing this thing through which makes me think they are focusing more on building a solid team for the long term and will go all in for a QB next year, maybe Marcus Mariota?  Who knows, I hate pre-draft.

I see us going bap. Meaning were either going to Draft clowney or mack. If neither are there, we might trade back so someone can take their future qb like Bridgewater or whatever qb

I agree these 1st round quarterbacks are reaches and none of them are a sure true qb to be a starter. They all have red flags. I'd go later in the Draft and take a qb

I think the real story in that article is that Jordan Palmer is mentoring Bortles.

I'm not sure I understand what the 'big' deal is.  He's basically just playing catch--anyone can look like a pro when it isnt a real game.  Just look at Gabby.

So, if the Jags take Bridgewater, it's a stupid selection and Dave Caldwell is stupid, right?

Duh, dude needs to eat a sandwich already. If you really think Bridgewater is a franchise QB, you're beyond delusional. Maybe in the third round, not the third pick

If we draft Bortles.....remember it's a "two fer".........we're also drafting Lindsey Duke

If we are going along those lines may as well draft McCarron in the second or third, have her and Webb in the stands each game lol.

If there were a section we could cordon off for the mentally impaired, we'd have to relegate you to it.

If we were to take Ted at #3, I'd have to check myself for the stupid.
