Caldwell Not Shopping Current Players....

Quote:Because his salary is 2.5 mil cheaper this year than it will be next year and Caldwell probably thought our oline would be better than it is and he wanted to give Blaine as many weapons as he could to see what he could do with it.  Now, next year his cap hit jumps up 2.5 mil and he has been hurt this year so he will be gone.

Exactly. But TMD doesn't get it. He's not the sharpest poster on this mb.

The sun's not yellow, it's chicken.

Quote:....still don't know why we just didn't cut him last offseason.....all we would have had to pay was the remaining signing bonus and not the 6.7 MIL.... He was actually worth so far below that salary it was ridiculous.

Caldwell is coming off as not the sharpest GM in the office.

They're not paying him 6.7 million dollars this year. That's his salary next year. His signing bonus is already paid. You know...when he signs.

Because he wanted a trial run on Marcedes this year.  Cutting him before the season would have saved us like 1.5 million on the cap.  Cutting him next season will save us like 6 million on the cap.  There is no reason not to keep some of the younger pieces for a season to at least have a chance to prove they may be a cog in the future.

Quote:Monroe was a good player.  Franchise LT.

I still don't think our GM got 'fleeced'.  It's a goodwill trade of a player we didn't plan on retaining.  Compensation wasn't great, but again -- how are we to know what his trade value was?

You say you'd have given a 2nd Round pick for Eugene Monroe if you were a team with a need at LT?  Given his contract situation.

Would you be upset if say... we didn't have Luke Joeckel and  Caldwell traded a 2nd + 4th Round pick for Trent Williams? Also assume he was going to be a free agent at the end of the year. How about Nate Solder? Jared Veldheer?

I'm saying IF you're going to trade away top 10 talent at a premium position you should get good compensation or your better off keeping that talent. If we didn't have Luke Joeckel I'd be even MORE upset about trading away Monroe. I'm fine with moving Monroe BECAUSE we drafted a LT that should replace him, do I think we needed to spend the 2nd overall draft pick on a LT NO I was hoping we'd address the horrible pass rush over the last decade with the 2nd overall pick.

But just to add salt to the wound of taking a LT when you already have a franchise LT we let one of the two get away for peanuts. It's bad management, it's bad personal moves, it's just overall horrible preparation and planning on Caldwell's part.

ESPECIALLY if reports by Ian are true this was thrown together in day.

.....lol, well NOW I would, given that the market set by Caldwell is a 4th/ 5th rounder as well as remaining salary for this season, paid for Monroe..... Laughing

but BEFORE that trade, I'd have probably expected to have to pay that kind of compensation for some of those listed.

Well, whatever the money was.

Point being, the only thing owed to Marcedes was the signing bonus - which you just said was already paid....

Makes the argument even more so that they should have cut him last offseason...

Thanks :thanks:

That's why wasting a 2nd overall pick on a LT when we had a LT was a head scratcher. Add to it we then trade our LT for a 4th and 5th it's more then frustrating it's down right disgusting.

I tell you guys what lets take the TOP WR next year and then trade Shorts for a 6th and 7th!

Marcedes showed enough in his SEVEN seasons what he is....another season wasn't necessary or shouldn't have been needed for Caldwell to "evaluate" him.

Again, would you be okay -- if we didn't have an LT like Luke -- trading a 2nd and a 4th for Jared Veldheer, assuming he's on the last year of his contract and would likely be a FA at the end of the year?

I was also upset when we picked an LT.  But if Luke turns out to be better than Monroe -- then I'll be glad we upgraded.  Could we have gotten something else?  Sure.  Would have been great. But this team needs an infusion of talent. Even if it's where we've got a little already.  I agree that Monroe was a Top 10 LT.  But if Luke is Top 5, then... I'll be glad to have him too.  I think once we get rid of more of Gene's guys, we'll see less of 'small upgrade' to positions where we already have some talent.

Caldwell probably didn't want to get hit so early with a big LT contract.  But he also wanted to see how Luke played in the NFL before putting his chips on him.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Since when are we paying for Eugene's remaining salary this season?

Yeah, thats a pretty good analogy, actually.

However, I do think that Joeckel will be better than Monroe at OLT, when all is said & done.

......that doesn't mean you deal Monroe for chump change and be happy though

So what happens if we didnt draft Joeckel and didnt trade Monroe and at the end of the year he doesnt want to be here and goes to another team.  Then we get no picks and we have a hole at LT and RT.  BRILLIANT! :teehee:

Thats what was reported on the Monroe thread earlier today.... (or most of his remaining salary for this season, anyway)

Yeah, probably.  But its a new coaching staff etc etc.  Maybe Gus wanted a chance to see him.  There was no point in cutting him one way or the other.  It was a free trial run.

Reported by a poster or by a news outlet?

He's going to be cut next spring after his salary spikes. They kept him for one season. Big deal.

Anyone ever think. Maybe Monroe wanted to be closer to his wife. And missed his family.

I heard we had to pay some of the salary because the Ravens didnt have the cap room to do it.  I bet there was some under the table stuff going on!
