Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

If TLaw wants us to back up the Brinks truck, then we better back the damn Brinks truck up for him.

Now is not the time to potentially play a ticky-tacky contract game - especially after we finally found OUR guy.

Anyone who's watched our games know that Trevor is playing at a high level despite what the statistics might show. Give him a little bit of time in the pocket and he can do some great things like he showed against the tinhorns.

Not saying CJ is chopped liver, but dear goodness the media is doing everything they can to make him the face of the division.

They want him to be Mahomes 2.0. That's all it boils down to.

Otherwise that's a 4 TD performance. The pick irks me but in fairness that was 100% a holding on the defense... Trevor is starting to heat up when it matters. Late November/December football. Hopefully he continues the trajectory and he's red hot in January.

Um, it is a discussion. If this is how we're gonna do things just close the forum. We can have the greasy mods just post the group think and we can all just nod and move on... Let's not pretend Trevor has been fantastic all season.. It's been shaky or up and down most of the way. Luckily for the team and fans, he is starting to string some quality games together. Should have had 4 total TDS today and that interception should have been DPI/holding. Could have been another score on that drive, but hard to know since we got hosed by the zebras.

All I'm saying is that it would be more entertaining and make a better discussion to actually drill down on certain things and have threads for those specific topics.  This is just some huge thread of "Uh-Huh" versus "Nuh-uh"

It's no longer productive.

Are you prohibited from creating such a thread?

I mean this would be a legit gripe if every time someone created a nuanced thread about a specific aspect of Trevor's play it just got merged into this, but I can't say that's happening.

As I just stated, I think the discussion is still valid.  The media are still trying to jump on the CJS bandwagon even when TLaw is the one racking up the wins and in position to again go on a postseason run. They treat him as an afterthought. I get such a ploy during last season, when we were coming off one of the worst coaching performances in history and the question was still to be decided if this were fluke or legit. At this stage, we know the team is a contender. What other franchise QBs get this downplayed focus?

Or you can get hung up win the thread title and moan.

Your choice

Having a mega thread this big about a main thing of the team means that other more entertaining topics that are related to this topic will be over-run by the Mega thread.  It's cool and all, but I'm just pointing out how having this type of thread actually makes detailed discussion about this particular player less likely...

But you're the moderator of the forum, and you like what you like and therefore you will dictate to us what is good and what is bad.  However, I'm well within my rights to discuss this within this thread the reason why this thread has worn out it's usefullness.

Oh, except, there is a use, isn't there?  We can keep this thread going to shame those that initially didn't think Lawrence was a Franchise QB.  That's a petty reason to keep such a thread going, in my opinion.

Care to cite examples of this in the recent posts? Create a better thread if you think there is better discussion to be had, that simple.

But why?

Who cares?  Nobody is going to read that entire [BLEEP]...  LOL

I mean, again, if you want to antagonize all those Lawrence haters, isn't there a better way that still allows the Forum to run in a more engaging and thoughtful way?  Eh, whatever.

All I'm saying is that every time I see this stupid thread, I wonder who the hell still is debating whether Trevor Lawrence is a Franchise QB or not.  Whoever is, is clearly a troll.  So why feed that type of stupid discussion.

Lawrence is a Franchise QB.  The discussion is over.  Why not start a thread, "Can Lawrence win a SB?"

At least that's something that can be debated.

This is on you, then. The thread title is a statement, not a question.

From day one he was the franchise. Just like Gabbert was. Just like Bortles was. Just like Leftwich was.

As he goes, so go we. No debate necessary.

I'd rather sign him to a 40 million per year contract...bring Josh Allen back...have both retire Jags.

If we choose not to extend him for another two seasons, he absotively, posolutely will be a 50+M guy.

If he pulls a Flacco and tears through the postseason like a buzzsaw, he certainly will merit a $50M deal.

I have all the confidence in the world that Shad will do everything in his power to keep Lawrence here for the next decade, no matter the cost.

Yeah, Shad will definitely spend the money; I worry about Baalke's ability to manage the deal and cap.

If I was Baalke I'd try to short change him.  I'd try to explain to him that he's in the ultimate small market where the nation doesn't believe in him or in his team.  I'd then try to leverage that so that he'd give the team a discount so that we can use cap space to keep him successful...

If I was Trevor, I'd tell them I'd take a discount so long as Press Taylor isn't the play calling OC.

Florida doesn't have income tax, so we can possible get him to sign for less.  But, of course, if Trevor wants to play hard ball, we have to pay him at the upper scale.  And he deserves the upper scale.

Again, if I was Baalke, I'd try to make him come back down to earth and explain to him that if he gives the team a bit of leverage, we can keep a juggernaught team that will pay off for him exponentially in terms of Brand creation and legacy.  But if we give him the BAG that is next in line, then the team will be decimated and he could potentially fizzle out like Herbert, Phillip Rivers, and other over paid QBs that needed the extra help...

I think it's a very good arguement.  Lawrence is a Franchise QB.  Dude is top 5 in terms of Mahommes mountain.  But he's also a long lasting QB.  He could be a QB for 15 years, unlike some of the more "mobile" QBs.  If he sees that, then we have a chance to keep him at a respectable salary as well as keeping some of our key pieces that also contrubute.

TLBig GrinR - Pay Lawrence his money if he's in the money game.  But if Lawrence is in the Legacy game, maybe we can work out a deal that benefits him and the team.

Well this is the big unknown with the contract. I don't see Lawrence as a guy who would demand to be the highest paid player and that would give you more flexibility with the cap to use elsewhere. I wouldn't play hardball as we need Lawrence more than he needs us, and by that I mean he could easily get paid $55m+ by any number of other teams so he holds the cards. I think Shad and Baalke would want to give him an offer around $55m+ a year to prove how much they value him and what he's done for the franchise. It will be interesting to see how Lawrence approaches it as I wouldn't be shocked to see him take something like $48m a year just to try and help the team but wouldn't call him greedy if he becomes the #1 paid QB.

You set the market on either guarantee or bonus, not both, to make player and agent happy. It's a fair deal in consideration of precedent and market value and I can't see how either side would make this negotiation contentious.

Don't get cute in negotiations. From the GM's perspective and the player's perspective, everybody at the table knows he's due a market setting contract. No need to lowball and play games. As GM, I think you put the onus on the player and ask him what he wants the next 5 years to look like for the roster. If he wants to be surrounded by talent, and I think Trevor is they type that would, then he'll be willing to have the contract written in such a way to defer salary and allow the rest of the roster to be maintained to the maximum extent that it can.

EDIT: He could also take a big signing bonus and do a 10 year contract like Mahomes which spreads it manageably over 10 years. So in that sense, he gets paid serious money up front and then re-do the deal down the road. This would allow for the rest of the roster to be maintained as well.

Yes, been saying this for some time.

Trevor is on record with multiple statements inferring this type of willingness to be cooperative with cap management when the time comes.

I have zero concern they will be able to get him on board with restructures and moving money around - especially if they get him signed on for 5 years or more - which I also expect to happen.

Gee in this modern psyche around football, I wonder why the media prefer CJ over Trevor? Hmm

Honestly who cares, I hope the media leaves us alone, craps, and sleeps on the team. Media fawning doesn't count in the win column. Trevor dials up great throws and barring a good play by the Texan defender, that play to Z was dropped in a great spot. The defender made a play.

It is so good to have a QB that van make throws.

Yeah. When I think about it, I can get really steamed about the lack of respect and acclaim Trevor gets from the media. From their perspective he’s too white and from the franchise in the city they think should have never had a franchise. They overlook that Buffalo, Cinci, Green Bay, etc. are small markets in less desirable places and that the Chargers are a homeless team nobody wants.

As far as CJ goes, he caught a lot of attention for playing as well as he has as a rookie. There’s a lot to like about him if he weren’t in our division. I wish the Falcons could have gotten him. He’s confident and an accurate passer. And he’s a good character kid.

Let's try to refrain from injecting race into this thread about our talented starting QB moving forward, please and thank you.

Not appropriate or necessary here.

We know the majority of national pundits don't care much for our little market, but we don't need to take it there.

Look at where Johnson was when Trevor threw this screen. This is the one he took for 40+ yards

Can't be real. Must be AI. I've been told TL doesn't trust his receivers - much less his #2 RB.

Sorry if you found it inappropriate. I think it speaks to the prevailing attitude in the media. It’s the liberal bias du jour. my personal perspective is that it doesn’t and shouldn’t matter what a person’s ethnicity is. We should be way past all that by now. And most of us are.

Stroud is new, and he's already really good, and that's why the media are fawning over him.  As they should.  Because he looks like he could be really great.  It has nothing to do with anything else.  He's the latest new thing, and that's why he's getting a lot of attention.

Trevor has 2 or 3 national media members who give him his due. The others are still skeptics.
