A write-up on two Centers in the upcoming Draft
|
Greg Gabriel of the NFP breaks down Centers Swanson and Richburg. Take the breakdown for what it's worth.
<p style="margin-left:40px;">Regarding Swanson: <p style="margin-left:40px;">"...Overall, Travis was a good college player, but he currently lacks the top physical traits to become a starter in the NFL. He is smart and tough, but needs to add strength and power ..." <p style="margin-left:40px;"> <p style="margin-left:40px;"> <p style="margin-left:40px;">Regarding Richburg: <p style="margin-left:40px;">"...Overall, a very steady and physical player. I can see Richburg eventually becoming a starter in the league. .."
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Since I live in Colorado, part of me hopes we can get Richburg and Kapri Bibbs both. Both should be good value and provide some good competition on our team. Richburg would obviously be a day 1 starter IMO.
Quote:Do they fit our scheme? I've read somewhere that Richburg was a pretty athletic guy, should be good for ZBS. I'll see if I can dig it up.
alex mack is still available right?
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

You read correctly. Quote:He comes from a ZBS from CSU and excelled in the process. Extremely smart as he was a former QB in high school. Plays with a nasty streak and finishes blocks. Can be slotted in at G but will make his money as a C.

Swanson sounds like Brewster

Like I've said...they are probably the 2nd and 3rd best (I still need to watch Bodine as he seems to be rising fast), but that isn't saying a whole lot right now. I agree that they are at best average starters. This is a very poor center class after Marcus Martin..

I agree that they are at best average starters. This is a very poor center class after Marcus Martin.. Depending on how you value Center it's a pretty decent class. Most starting Centers are found in the mid to late rounds if you take a look around the league. I think Ikard could be a late round steal as well. You also have to take into account of the possibility of some of these OG's and undersized Tackles who may be able to move inside as a future Center.

He's easily the most athletic of that third tier group and could fit well in a ZBS in time...but he's no sure thing and definitely shouldn't be counted on to start right away.
i haven't looked much at the centre class and can't comment on richburg but I have watched a fair bit of swanson and martin and i feel like they are two halves of an elite centre
swanson is one of the best lineman in pass protection i've seen coming out of college. His mental game is very good and he seems to read his blocks very quickly and have a nack for getting in the right position. I've not seen him get really beat on in pass protection in all the film i've seen. In the run game it's a different story. He doesn't get beat but he doesn't beat his man either. He has a good initial punch and opens up a slight gap then sets his feet and holds him their. He doesn't finish blocks and I don't think he has the strength to drive his opponent backwards beyond that initial burst. His combine numbers suggested quite good mobility and explosiveness but his upper body strength is lacking. I also think at 6-5 he sets his feet and bends his back to prevent opponent from getting under him and driving him backwards but it also means he can't drive through... so some technical coaching could do wonders for his run blocking i think he can start day 1 with his mental game allowing him to compete but physically he needs to get stronger to be a dominant centre in the nfl. martin has all the physical tools, he is the perfect size, moves really well and finishes blocks He is a strong physical player who drives through beautifully in the run block whilst he has great feet and the mobility to pull or slide along the line. I don't think he has the same mental aptitude as swanson in reading the game. Where as swanson seems to have a nack for being in the right place I've seen a few occassions where martin seems to be half a second too late in getting to his man. If he can get hands on the guy with that solid base under him he is very difficult to move but he doesn't read the game very fluidly which can lead to him being caught out. As i said if we had martin's physical tools and swanson's mental tools you'd have a first round centre. i think martin should be the higher prospect as he will probably be easier to develop mentally than swanson physcially i think martin will go mid second round swanson early third so I think swanson would be better value than overdrafting martin in the second We show less advertisements to registered users. I wouldn't let a scheme keep me from drafting a Pro Bowl-caliber center. If we deny a player with those qualities from coming here because of an inability to elevate the level of coaching to the player's advanced abilities, then we have a unqualified coach.
When you improve your talent, you get better potential. When you get better then you can coach players to perform more than a over-simplified package. If I am a qualified coach, why would I want less that the most talented player(s) to coach? If I am an incompetent, highly inexperienced coach, I seek players dumber than I am because a over-simplified scheme is all that I can comprehend. A incompetent coach seeks players below his own coaching ability. When you see a team draft untalented players it directly relates to their incompetent coaches. Do you hear me, Mr. Khan?

If you're saying we should draft players without any concern for the scheme we're trying to run, then you are very wrong. I've heard a lot of commentators say that Dallas is a prime example of drafting talented players without concern for whether they fit the scheme. You wind up with 13 pro bowlers and an 8-8 record. The best teams try to acquire players who fit their scheme. Seattle, Pittsburgh and New England are historical examples of that. |
