The Pro Day: what purpose does it really serve?

Quote:I hate to burst your bubble, but the truth is... You make it sound like he arrived 30 minutes late, flicked everyone the V's, slapped Gus's bald head, tweeked Shad's tache and told everyone to join him in the backroom of the strip club for coke and hookers. He threw a few bad passes, in underwear, to guys running against air, it means nothing. Quote:You make it sound like he arrived 30 minutes late, flicked everyone the V's, slapped Gus's bald head, tweeked Shad's tache and told everyone to join him in the backroom of the strip club for coke and hookers. That last paragraph says it all. Quote:The scouts really wanted to see how Ryan handled the day, not just how he threw. How a college quarterback transitions into an NFL one is almost as important as how he throws the deep out. Think about it: Drafting a quarterback in the first round can often do more harm than good.

Quote:Then name a franchise QB that had one so bad. Just one. okay so you took a serious question as a challenge... i asked because i can't remember when the pro days from the considered top qb prospects (aside from luck and Griffin) were a big deal either way. you seem to be speaking from a position of authority on the matter. i figured you would know...
Here's the answer to the OP from scouts:
Quote:Scouts for the Lions and the Cardinals have spoken to their teams’ websites about the usefulness of pro days and revealed just what you’d think: By far the most important part of a player’s evaluation is his game tape, and by the time the pro day rolls around, there’s little a player can do to affect his draft stock. http://m.nbcsports.com/content/scouts-say-pro-days-are-tiny-part-their-evaluations

Seems like its just something to do.
For QBs the Combine and Pro Days don't really serve much of a purpose other than collecting measureables. The Pro Day, is probably more worthless. Scripted throwing drills with no pads, and no real or simulated pass rush. Maybe they should do that drill they do in Madden with the tennis balls..... Combine and Proday in the grand scheme of things mean next to nothing. When have they ever been reliable predictors of success? Game film breakdown might be the only true indicator of the potential of a QB, and even then drafting a QB is still mostly a crapshoot. Quote:Seems like its just something to do. Simply put, Pro Days aren't something you miss on. If you do, then that in itself is meaningful.

Quote:To those who would choose to sweep it under the rug... absolutely! I'm not sweeping anything under a rug, as an evaluation tool of a players ability, its meaningless. You are only deciding it has meaning because its a player you have decided you don't like who had a bad pro day. You often site what the scouts and personnel men are saying. Have a read up on what they think about pro days. You think Tom Brady has never had a bad underwear practice? Does he suck? Its a chance to for scouts to to talk to a guy. For a question marks to be raised about a guys ability based on a pro-day, he has to be beyond bad. Quote:Just to be different, Bortles.
The same analysts that say pro days dont matter have guys shuffling all over the board after a pro day. Lol
Quote:To those who would choose to sweep it under the rug... absolutely! So how does it compare to the countless hours of game film? Do you honestly think a pro day workout...good or bad...would outweigh what a player has on tape? Suppose Stephen Morris dazzled at the Miami Pro Day. Does he suddenly become a first round pick? Of course not. Conversely, Bridgewater won't drop out of the first round simply due to that pro day. A Pro day is a factor, but not THE factor. Not by any stretch. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote:So how does it compare to the countless hours of game film?Thats because Stephen Morris sucked in games too. Manziel was historically good in games. Bridgewater I think will be ok, but honestly I still dont get how you can look bad at a pro day. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Thats because Stephen Morris sucked in games too. Shrinks when the pressure is on. Manziel does the exact opposite.

Quote:So how does it compare to the countless hours of game film? Like I said before, it only matters if you don't shine. It's a gimme. Or rather, should be. He blew it, and that can never be taken away. Now, he'll have to answer for being the only one of the top candidates to do so. It is what it is, no matter the excuses.
"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."
Quote:Thats because Stephen Morris sucked in games too.Exactly my point. Bridgewater has three seasons worth of games where he shows his ability on tape for the scouts to examine. That's thirty nine starts. He has looked progressively better over the course of his career. Manziel has two ultraproductive years under his belt. Morris has mediocre at best years. No 60-90 minute workout is going to outweigh that. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote:Shrinks when the pressure is on. Manziel does the exact opposite. In what game did Bridgewater shrink with the pressure on? Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Quote:Like I said before, it only matters if you don't shine. It's a gimme. Or rather, should be. Its not the Superbowl, its an underwear practice. Quote:Just to be different, Bortles. Quote:Its not the Superbowl, its an underwear practice. And why did he stink at it?
Before Teddy pro day : Its just another piece to the puzzle for GM's to evaluate players
After Teddy pro day: It means nothing After Manziel pro day: it means less than nothing |
