Inflation - Grocery Shopping
|
We've had a few general discussions here on inflation so I wanted to narrow this topic down to grocery shopping.
We have a pretty nice Winn Dixie and Publix in town (renovated WD marked by the big checkmark on their signage). Anyway, it really seems that WD has recently dropped their prices to slightly above the pre-Covid days and continues to offer extensive sales in the form of BOGOs and 20% off items. Even their cold cuts are back to $8.99 - $10.99, often offering $2 off per pound on select items based on their weekly sales. Conversely, I haven't noticed Publix bringing their prices down at all since peak inflation. When convenient (not very often), we also stop in to Walmart to grab some items. Most items that I noticed over the years experienced a slight increase so there really wasn't any drastic increases in their grocery pricing and no real deductions or sales being offered. Given the above, where do you shop for groceries and have you noticed any reductions to their peak inflation pricing? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I went to Costco and Publix yesterday after work. Spent close to $400 in total for bulk items and goods. It's just me, my wife and my four year old son, so, we don't break the bank too much. That usually gets me about three weeks worth of goods, dinners, snacks, [BLEEP] like that.
I also have a dog that runs me about $65 per month between his food and treats. I'll often by the Costco brand stuff to save a few dollars off the name brand stuff. On average, that's probably anywhere between $15 - $20 in savings just by doing that. Publix is still price gouging the [BLEEP] out of us from what I can tell. I like getting my deli meats and cheeses from them though. To save even more money, especially with me focusing more on my weight lifting this year, I have opted to start making protein pizzas and protein ice cream at home instead of buying, again, store brand or name brand options. You get a [BLEEP] ton of more bang for your buck by simply making it on your own from scratch. Another way I like to save is by portion control at dinner time. I'll fast a minimum of 16 hours per day or more. Thus, foregoing breakfast and lunch which stretches my groceries out. I learned this during covid and it's stuck with me since. The longer I can go without? The more I save in the long run. This is with me still nailing anywhere between 150G - 200G of protein per day and not exceeding more than 1,900 calories in a day diet wise. Inflation sucks. Not much you can do about it really other than control what you can personally within your own limitations and dietary needs. A crockpot and a smoker goes a long way though. Having the ability to dump some chicken or beef in a pot and just adjust the seasoning day to day with a side of rice, pasta or ready to go frozen vegetables can help you save as well. Smoked meat lasts longer when stored away. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. I love WD even more now that I just bought mucho 6-packs of Vodoo Ranger IP and Sweetwater G13 Hazy IPA (both are 9% ABV) at the BOGO discounts. We show less advertisements to registered users. I too go to Costco for some select items (salmon, pesto, feta cheese, olives, and some other bargain pricing items that seem super expensive in local grocery stores). Funny you mentioned the dog food as we don't have any pets but I just saw how expensive the big bag of dry dog food is and joked that it was like having another kid. We like making things from scratch, mostly when we can freeze or jar the content for long term use and storage.
NAS Jax commissary. Although, we buy some items from Costco in bulk and other things we just like from there.

We do Costco for some stuff but there is a lot of stuff they don't have.
I've been trying to shift from Publix to Kroger delivery or Aldi but the wife is pushing back hard. "The generic just doesn't taste as good". "But I really want this thing that they don't have." I want to punish Publix for these wild price increases on boxed, canned, bagged foods but she's not on board at all.

We grow many of our fruits and vegetables as well as spices here on our farm. Excess is usually sold, given away or donated.
We get most of our meats from a couple of local farms and have it butchered at a local place. It's way less expensive and healthier than anything purchased in a store. We also get fresh raw milk from a dairy farm and make our own butter, cheese, ice cream and a few other things with the cream. We have an unlimited supply of eggs and often have to give some away to friends and neighbors. Our "store bought" groceries we get from Kroger and have it delivered. Prices are usually less expensive than other stores and since it's delivered we don't have to make the trip to town. We also earn "fuel points" which gives us a discount on gas. I recently filled up my truck with a 36 gallon fuel tank with $1.00 off of the price on the pump. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Anyone in the Jacksonville area use local fare Jax for produce (and other items)? They partner with local organic farms and deliver organic, local seasonal produce to your doorstep. I really love them and it's pretty affordable, too. They get great local grass fed beef, pasture raised chicken, pasture eggs, milk/cheese from wainwright, etc. etc.

You support families instead of corporations and the food is super fresh and much more flavorful. We have two farmer's markets during the week that has everything from fruits and veggies to meat, eggs and fresh baked goods. Very tasty.
Great deals to be had at all three of the current Florida usual suspects (Publix, Winn-Dixie, Aldi)
Since I don't really have time to hit all three in one day to do a weekly shop, I alternate between them from week to week. I'll stock up a bit if there's an especially good deal at each/any of them. Best example I can offer as to why I utilize all three is that if I just walk into Publix and get exactly what I want - I'm going to pay a bit of a premium. If I look at that Publix receipt/list and find a few equal but more affordable alternatives at WD and Aldi, I'll end up saving quite a bit by purchasing those particular items at the discount competitor rather than Publix when possible. Inflation has affected a few items that are essential at the grocery store, but it is probably the least consequential area affecting the cost of living in Florida compared to where we were prior to the latest real estate market jump and coinciding rate hike. It is rent or home ownership/insurance costs that have seen the most egregious shift. Auto insurance has taken a nasty little jump as well. We show less advertisements to registered users. Hard to argue with the National True Cost of Living Coalition
https://twitter.com/nypost/status/179913...sawPg&s=19 2/3rds is consistent from what I've been reading.
(06-07-2024, 02:32 PM)WingerDinger Wrote: Hard to argue with the National True Cost of Living Coalition I see that and understand but my latest shock is seeing all the people at Costco grabbing varieties of fish at $11.99 LB and up .... I appreciate the health aspect of things but I still find myself in the Winn Dixie freezer bin grabbing the 4 LB packet of Tilapia that is on sale for $12. --- hasn't killed me, yet.

I usually buy half a salmon when they're on sale and cut them into portions and freeze them in Food saver bags. I just got $30 of filet mignon for $18 on "Manager's Special" and froze the portions. That was a super lucky find. A local grocery store similar to Publix will occasionally have 2lb bags of shrimp 'buy one get two free' or 'buy two get three free'. Depending on the sale I'll get 6lbs-12lbs of shrimp and divide it into 1lb per Foodsaver bags for the deep freezer. I love my Foodsaver and deep freezer. |
