Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

(This post was last modified: 06-13-2024, 11:54 PM by JaguarJosh2. Edited 1 time in total.)

I don't like the timing. Still needed a "prove it" year I think. Last season wasn't good enough. Hope we didn't just buy expensive garbage. Regressing player with turnover problems?

Ok happy he is locked up just wondering how his pay stacks up I guess

People freaking out over 5 years $275M which doesn't kick in until after the 2 remaining years on his current deal.  We're slotted to pay 2024 level salary in 2026 when the guys up for contract that year will be getting much more than that.  If Trevor performs, and I believe he will, and gets us to AFC championship games or Super Bowls, we'll probably be re-doing this deal in a few years.

We haven’t had a decent qb since maybe Mark Brunel.  Get real. If the jags lost Lawrence, we would be back in no man’s land for another 10 plus years and that’s being generous. Now it’s time to go earn the money.

Just win, man. That's all there is to it. It can be good, it can be bad and it can be ugly. Just find ways to win. I think he's done that over the last two years and I think the numbers will come. Which a lot of that just comes from Fantasy Football nuts that want to see a top three QB every week hitting their points.

We'll see what happens though. He's absolutely earned the right, and, as time moves on, in the very, very near future, again, his contract will be small fry stuff when the next wave of deals are hit. He's tied for tier1 QB pay NOW, but, by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026. He'll probably be below top four paid more than likely.

If anything, it's just the price of doing business and trying to get ahead of the market before somebody [BLEEP] it up for you. The Justin Jefferson deal and Calvin Ridley deal this off season are PRIME examples of why it's better to get ahead of something rather than [BLEEP] around and find out. Drafting Brian Thomas Jr. and having Lawrence's potential WR1 for the next five years on a rookie contract is massive now.

Getting Josh Allen's deal done is massive now Travon Walker having just two more years on his contract after this season is up, and, if he continues to progress? He'll be another one that you have to make the money move for. Which I think Baalke already has in mind. It's refreshing to see [BLEEP] like this getting done for once. Just look back at how that 2016 class unfolded.

We lost Ramsey, we lost Ngakoue and we managed to keep Jack, but, he never really hit his stride or potential here when he was being bounced around between ILB and WLB or SLB. So, I can appreciate what Baalke has managed to pull off here. We're getting a new stadium soon. It feels like the groundwork is in place now to set this franchise up for many, many years to come.

Cannot frown upon any of that really. Unless you're just a troll or goblin of course.

There's always outs and options if things go south. Which I don't believe will be the case anyway. This is the price of doing business and trying to stay ahead of the market. At the end of the day, look, the way I see it? It's not my money and it's not my problem if it all goes to [BLEEP].

Khan, Baalke and the coaching staff will have to answer to that. I am just here for the ride as a fan.

This is amazing. Best Jaguars news of the last decade at least.
Getting that stadium agreement through the city council is going to be another biggie.
These are franchise-defining times. The house that Trevor built.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

I believe this is great news for Jaguars' fans. Trevor will begin this season with no contract talk distractions. Is he worth that money is not the right question. When compared to just about all other professions, NFL players are all ridiculously overpaid, but this is the world in which we live. Trevor should definitely be a top 5-10 quarterback this season and for the next decade, barring significant injuries. That means the Jaguars should be in the playoff picture every season in the unforeseeable future with at least a shot at making and winning their first Super Bowl. Shad Khan may not be the best owner, but he has made 2 huge financial commitments to the team's best players and this should make every fan happy!

You're SOOOO right! There's just so many franchise QBs out there for us to pick from there's absolutely no reason to pay a fair market value deal to a 24 year old who's only won us one division title, one playoff game and gives the first back to back winning seasons in over a decade while carrying a dumpster fire on his shoulders. We should totally get back to the our hay day of 2020 where we belong!

Reading division rival fans on twitter/x overjoyed at us locking him up for up to the next 7 years. It's funny when looking at the past 2 years where Trevor is 3-1 each against the tacks and clots and 2-2 against the tinhorns and they're cheering for us extending him? Haha. Forgive them, for they know not what they're watching or what's coming. The end of year skid last year is going to be the anomaly when we look back in a couple of years.

So Trevor is signed through the 2030 season. That's 7 more years. We'll probably see several extensions for salary cap management.

I have complete confidence that if we give him a running game and pass protection, he'll be a top-5 QB.

He obviously got the signing bonus now, but his annual salary will be very team friendly in 2026 and beyond when this new deal kicks in.  We're going to field a competitive roster around him for a long time.  Buckle up everyone and get ready for years of packed houses, playoff appearances and high fiving random other jaguars fans at home games.

Absolutely. I think we have a lot to look forward to as a fanbase. For me, it's just refreshing to see signs of stability for the first time in decades. The stadium deal coming into fruition, the extensions of Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence now and some of the draft decisions and free agency signings made since Baalke has taken over have been good overall for this franchise.

Only time will tell of course. But, with all that said? Nobody can say this team, our owner, and this front office didn't sit back and do anything. They're trying to build a winning team here and this is what a winning team should be doing when the time calls for it. Proud of our Jaguars man. Really am. It's great to be a fan right now.

That's too much money for what he has shown, he better play like he is worth that but I seriously doubt he does.

Where's that "team friendly" deal some people were expecting?  Tongue

I'm a little bit surprised that he tied the top QB contract, but that's the way of NFL negotiations.

Here's a couple silly ways to look at his contract based on his 2023 stats based on $55M/yr.

Each touchdown Trevor threw for would get him $2.61M.
Each completion Trevor would get him $148,000 dollars.
Each pass attempt would get him $97,000 dollars.
Each passing yard would get him $13,690 dollars.
Each rushing yard would get him $162,000 dollars.

(These are independently calculated, and are just for fun--NOT a prediction of future performance.)

Deserved? He is making more than Mahomes by quite a bit, tied with Joe Burrow. Both guys I would take over Trevor in my sleep, it isn't even a debate. Trevor is a decent QB, he's not some giga scrub, but I also don't consider him a top QB or elite in any aspect of his play. This is an egregious overpay, I get this is how the QB market works, but if it were me I would have waited a year. I'd rather pay a known elite QB 100 mil a year then pay the next Daniel Jones 50 mil a year.

I have never been truly convinced about his play. He definitely hasn't lived up to the pre-draft chatter.

That being said: the team has extended him so it's going to be 16 for a while. We'll have to trust that Trent Baalke knows what he's doing, won't we?

Good to know that Trevor finally will be elite. 5,000 yds, 40 TD's and a few play off wins per season are coming.

That’s not true.

Trevor won’t be a FA until 2031.

His contract won’t kick in until the 2026 season.
