How Many Draft Picks Should Start?

#21

Quote:Another way to look at it is to see how many areas could be upgraded with a rookie. I see that possibility at G,C,OLB,S,QB,WR,TE, and to a lesser extent, CB,DE, and RT. There are places where a rookie can come in and earn a spot.
Good point but I don't agree with your details.

It's unlikely that we get an upgraded starter (by week 1 without injury) at RT DE CB QB TE. There is only one WR (Watkins) that would start over cecil if blackmon is playing. I could very much see a new center and right guard start week 1. A high pick for OLB could start too. FS as well, probably converted from corner.

I see 4 or 5. 2 out of the first 3 rounds. Then 2 more significant contributors from the 4/5th round selections. One more from the 6/7/UDFA crowd.

RT becomes a need if Paztor slides to RG...pretty sure a starter will come at RT/RG through the draft.

DE: IF we go Clowney he slides in...Ford/Crichton in the 2nd round could see a lot of the field...but behind 1st/2nd round I agree

CB: We still need a 2nd CB so someone could easily slide into that spot

QB: Unless its #3 or one of the QBs falls into our 2nd pick ...I agree

TE: I could see a TE seeing the field a lot in 2TE packages or if we draft a receiving type TE

Assuming we don't trade down, I think you have an easy 3. Rounds 1-3 should provide immedaite upgrades at several positions. Four is a definite possibility. If/when we take a QB between rounds 2-4, I can see him sitting on the bench for a few games, maybe a year. Either way this draft is amazing.  With an easier schedule and some new talent, I can see this team winning 8 games.

BORTLES ISN'T A FRANCHISE QB. FOURNETTE WILL BE A BUST.

Yes, this is going to be a bad year.  I think the turn in W-L will be in 2015 when we hit the 7or8 win mark.

donald brown isn't on the colts anymore, on a side not they'll get reggie wanye and that other guy back from injury this year as well. And they have hakeem nicks

My initial response would be three starters from the 2014 draft but that's contingent on the drafting process. If we draft a QB at #3 he may sit for the first half of the season. Even a WR may not start within the first half of the season. The only position that I predict to start immediately are OG and LB (first two rounds)... I don't see another position being overtaken by a rookie...

Final Answer... Two...

Ten upgredeable spots w/eleven picks? If we select BAP we won't come close to these numbers. Let's remember that all drafts are A Hit/Miss scenario... All teams Miss more than they Hit...

To begin the season: 3 starters

By mid-year: 4 starters

3 sounds realistic. Five would be a great result. Although as others have said, it largely depends on the positions we go for.

The important thing is that we don't see it as a failure if only a handful go straight into the team at the start of the season. We can afford to be patient if we believe what we're being told about the depth of talent in the draft.

Quote:I got to thinking about this. Currently the team has 11 picks. Barring any trades that change that number, that's 11 rookies coming in as of May. Ideally, it would be great if all 11 came in and became starters and played at a high level. I think that's a little unrealistic though. But what is realistic? The more rookies that immediately start would either signal a weak roster or a very good and lucky GM. Fewer players would obviously mean the opposite. So that said, what is the number that would be nice to see come September?

I think I put it at 5, personally. The top 3 picks, and hopefully a couple mid rounders at positions of need.

Is it realistic to get a starter at guard in the fourth or fifth?

A WR in the fourth that would start?

A LB around that area?

Just something to kick around that doesn't revolve around the names so much as the overall roster and finding fits throughout the draft.
If you studied film on a player, watched his pro day / scouting combine, interviewed him and really felt this guy could make a positive difference on the field you draft him.  The best guy you can get goes in the 1st and then down the line to the 7th round.

If you dont have anyone better on your team and you have to start all 11 draft picks than it is probably a good indicator that your team didnt meet up to your standards (if your a new GM like Dave if not than that can be bad as it shows your picks didnt pan out).

I think that is the more interesting questions.  How many rookies will 'gain' the starting nod by season's end?  I think 2, in addition to the 4 I've already mentioned.

I'd say every selection through the end of the fourth round has a chance to start.

Quote:Basically say the draft fell:

1: Mack/Clowney/Bridgewater - Obvious Starter as to be expected from round 1 pick.

2: Yankey/Van Noy/Jackson/Sua'Filo - Same as round 1

3: Richburg/Moncrief/Sankey/Mason/Desir - Due to our roster I would expect any of these to step in as starters minus the RBs would would have it by end

4s: Watt/Dozier/Seastrunk/Fiedorowicz - More dependent on position but a RB/OG/TE could easily be drafted and be a starter.

5s: Cockrell/Aikens/Hubbard - I think Cockrell/Aikens are sheme fits and could be CB2 starters Hubbard could take Allen OLB spot as well.

6s: Stork/Storm - Doubtful starters but it all depends on positions

7: Doubtful Starters.

I think due to our roster and such a deep draft I would sit the over under @ 4.

Bridgewater/Van Noy/Richburg would be locks as starters and you would think Dozier/Cockrell/Aikens would have very good shots at the RG/CB2 slot.
This is a realistic mock draft for the Jags. Most likely, the 1st 3 picks would be Mack, one of the guards and Richberg. All of these would

start immediately. As far as the rest of the draft, my guess is that at least a couple would get significant playing time, but not immediate starters. A couple others would play on special teams and be developmental players.

A rookie could start at QB, FB, TE (doubtful but Lewis is meh...), C, RG, OLB, and DE and no one would be surprised. Collectively, that's a lot of rookies, but individually, we wouldn't be surprised if a rookie cracks the starting lineup...

... so 3 or 4 easy I think

I'm going with players that will start week 1 snap 1 on offense and defense 3 rookie starters

I think we will pick a QB that will sit behind henne for the first few games

By that logic and assuming pasztor is our right tackle the only first day starters we could pick at 3

Are Mack at Olb and Watkins at wr

Please note as Clowney is raw and with Clemons on the roster I believe Clowney would initially sit at 2 on the depth chart with babin being cut

Clemons Clowney branch davis would be our depth chart at Leo

As such with a 2 in 6 chance of our first rounder starting week 1 snap 1 I think we can say our first round pick probably won't start

I think we will pick up an RB who will be part of the rotation with Gerhart and Todman but Gerhart will be the starter

I think at least 2 picks between rounds 2 and 4 will be offensive line and with the current competition I think they will start at centre and right guard

I feel like free safety corner tight end could all be upgraded and so its feasible ball Evans or harbor could be beat out in camp and a rookie take there place

I will go with 3 rookie starters at right guard centre and free safety

My bet marqueston huff in the 4th to beat out Evans in camp
