Offensive Line 2024
|
I get the Oline is a worry but it's kinda crazy how people are losing hope and calling for firings already. It's preseason, guys aren't playing 100% and it's all vanilla schemes. Oh and the 5th choice LT isn't very good.
This is an area Doug is very aware of and has spent a lot of time talking about it. Let's see how things are after a few real games and we make adjustments to how teams play us. Thank you, semantics magistrate, for issuing your ruling. Call it whatever the [BLEEP] you want, but teams look to improve their depth with other team's cast offs every year, and the Jags could do that with a cut from a team that is deep with IOL players. As could the tinhorns...
There was some serious snatching at the pub last night.

If a team cuts another player, and he ends up on the Jaguars roster that's just the normal procedure in the NFL. Maybe if the Jags get a player that the other team was planning to put on the practice squad, that could be described as "snatching." ^Good article: "No matter which way you spin it, the Texans improved and will likely be a Super Bowl contender this season." But I absolutely expect Nick Caserio to be active, the Texans are pretty thin at the LB and CB (Okudah has been hurt) positions and could use more depth. DT which was one of my offseason concerns looks pretty good, no star players but a lot of vets that should get the job done. If there's value I could see them add a G for depth, luckily Kenyon Green (former 1st rounder) looks to be healthy and is finally playing up to his draft slot. I would say the biggest unknown/weakness is the running game. They haven't lined up with their starting 5 OLmen (sounds familiar, yeah?) and Mixon in the backfield. Through the preseason they kept playing Pierce as a starter, and he has IMO played himself off the team (after having a full season and 2 training camps he looks lost in the zone running system.) Luckily, they acquired Cam Akers in the summer and despite the fact he's torn both achillles he looks pretty darned good, but he's clearly an injury risk. --The Semantics Magistrate

![]() Good write-up on a few young guys making a good impression early. Sucks because I know especially that Beebe was a big hit on a lot of radars on the board last April. If nothing else, there's some coaching and scouting names in here that we may want to poach if our gang look like hot garbage down the road. How great would it be if we had some stories about our successful drafting and development? A boy can dream. Sort of, but I'm disagreeing with the 2 main "weaknesses" brought up in that article, particularly as it applies to finding players post-cut. The article points out that the OL and DL are the two weaknesses, but IMO it's the LB and CB positions that could use depth. I spoke about the DL above. On the offensive line, we have Tunsil and Howard at T backed up by 2nd rounder Blake Fisher (who's made big strides in the offseason, and looked pretty good filling in for Howard and Tunsil at RT and LT.) Then there's Kenyon Green, Juice Scruggs, and Shaq Mason at IOL backed up by Kendrick Green and Patterson. There will likely be another player on the roster that will be brought along. I think this line is in the top half of the league, particularly in pass-blocking.

What's up with Foster? Listened to the Boselli and prisco Monday podcast and they seemed pretty adamant that he isn't ready to play. Kept caveating it by saying he had tools to develop. But the gist of it was he isn't close to being ready to help if injuries occur. Thought they alo said he doesn't look like a tackle.
Surprised me as I didn't think he was a developmental guy. I thought he was more of a high floor low ceiling guy who had a ton of playing experience, first team all sec, 3rd team all American, etc.... Typically players with that resume are sound quality football players that go later in the draft because they just don't have elite physical tools. But they don't really need development per se. They are who they are and either they technically can overcome their limitations or they can't. Is he the opposite? Did he have a ton of playing experience but never developed technically and just got by on physical tools? If so that would concern me a bit more as a guy who played 4 years should have picked up better fundamentals. Sure they can be taught once a pro but he would have to overcome all those bad habits reinforced with years of playing time. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. I think O-linemen would have better opportunities if they learned G and T.

Logically, Rauscher(sp?) and Pederson should develop him at guard if he can't handle the pass rush outside. But I suspect they'll be stubborn, and he'll be playing out of position all his rookie contract. Then, he'll go to another team and flourish as a guard. That's how it seems tow ork.

Foster was beat like a drum…. My concern is he’s already 24…. How much can he develop when hes the same age as Trevor.

Can you cite any examples of Jaguars tackles flourishing with other teams as guards? I can't think of a single one, but you might know of someone I'm forgetting. And it's interesting to me that you've already decided he's out of position based on 80 days as a Jaguar in which you've seen him play about 40 snaps. Whipping Boy of the Year indeed, lol.
