Gabbert is a terrible example; he's missing the most important skill a QB has......a football IQ. He simply doesn't know what to do with the ball. He'll leave a good pocket on one play, then stay while it's collapsing and get buried on the next. He can't find a receiver with a GPS unit and he freezes like a deer in the headlights when he sees a rush coming.

I think "it" has alot to do with instinct. You cant teach it. Gabbert had bad instincts.

It is leadership charisma.  Can you get the best out of those around you.  Manziel has it in spades.  The one place where he needs improvement is progressions, etc.  Good coaching can elevate this.  And though that's not a minor thing, he has all the raw talent and intangibles that you can't teach.  If he will apply himself and has the benefit of good coaching, he can be a special player.

I don't think anyone has ever said that Jaguars should select Manziel SOLELY or even PRIMARILY because of 'ticket sales' and 'jerseys'. But that it is an added bonus that not only sets him apart from every other prospect in the 2014 draft, but anyone who doesn't at least factor that in, doesn't know how much the NFL is truly a business. Certainly at some point the Jaguars brass have at least discussed the financial side of it.

 

Going from the least watched NFL team nationally(I would assume), to one of if not the most watched teams? One of the least valuable teams(according to Forbes) last year, to perhaps the highest yearly-revenues in Jaguar history next year by drafting one single guy? Going from the team most rumored to be shipped off to London, to the hottest ticket in the NFL, highest selling jersey, most popular player, etc?

That's no small thing Buns. The JAguars couldn't buy that kind of exposure if they wanted to. 

 

Listen, i'll be the first to agree with you and quote your posts that it's dumb to say lets get Johnny cause he'll sell tickets. But for a team like ours that is not only looking for a franchise QB, but in many ways a financial turnaround and economic boost to the franchise, the city, to building up our downtown, etc, Manziel could be hitting two birds with one stone.

You don't get many opportunities like this, that make the Fans happy with the most exciting player in football on the field, the Coach happy with arguably the best available QB in the draft, and the Owner happy by making him very-very rich. This is very big for a team like ours.

This brings up the same issues that Tebow did. Someone please show me any sort of proof that drafting Johnny Football would substantially change attendance initially.

 

The Tebow argument may have had some merit, as he as a local legend. Johnny isn't.

 

Sure, the Jaguars would be more of a television curiosity than they are now. I just don't see large numbers (perhaps not even small numbers) rushing to buy tickets. If Johnny plays great (would he even start anytime soon?) and the team starts winning, then tickets will sell. 

 

People who want to see an NFL team have tickets. Until they win I don't see Johnny moving the needle all that much.

A&M was a 7-4 team last year, 4th place in the SEC west. And yet their games last season were the 3rd most watched college team in the nation. More people tuned in to watch Manziel than watched the undefeated Seminoles, than Ohio State, than Texas, Oregon, the Gators, etc. That's crazy Adam. It makes no sense. People have said that he had the most talked about(perhaps the most watched) pro day in history. There's just something about him.

 

IMO RG3 didn't have half the exposure Manziel did, and yet he revitalized the Redskins, broke the NFL jersey-sales record his first year. I dunno, I think people will be amazed the money that will follow Manziel(already with NIke, Mcdonalds, etc). It's just hard to guestimate now because college players aren't allowed to make profits. But everything he's done so far has drawn a crowd or made money. EAsily the most popular non-pro athlete in the nation right now.

No, seriously though Shack. I don't think Jaguars fans can quite wrap their minds around the financial impact on the entire city of having the most popular non-pro athlete in the nation(soon to be pro) in our city and as the face of our franchise. We've been trying to build-up/spruce up our downtown, especially around the stadium for years. It's amazing what some of these mega sports stars can do to/for smaller cities.

 

Just ask Cleveland what having Lebron James did for their city, and it's financial impact on Cleveland's economy when he left.

Some financial experts estimated that the value of the Cleveland franchise dropped 200-million dollars the minute his 'decision' went public. And countless millions seemingly lost in bars, transportation, hotels, etc, etc, that having the biggest name in sports brought to the city.
