Anthony Barr - Is he an option?

#1

I feel that picking Barr at #3 overall would be a case of not maximizing the value in a draft pick, but I wanted to know if anyone had a feel for this guy.

He has some crazy production numbers, even if you don't consider that he's only been playing Defense for two seasons. Check out his stat lines the past two seasons:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">2012

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Tackles - Solo 60, For Loss 21.5, Total 83

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Sacks - 13.5

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Pass Defensed - 5

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Forced Fumbles - 4

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">2013

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Tackles - Solo 43, For Loss 20, Total 66

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Sacks - 10

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Pass Defensed - 1

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Forced Fumbles - 6

To me, that ain't a bad piece of work that the man has put together. And the more that I look at the draft, I can't shake the feeling that Clowney is going to Houston and Watkins is going to St. Louis. With those two gone, would  Barr be a better option than Mack? It makes sense that you could trade back to Atlanta's spot - provided they want an OT - and still get this guy.

Does anyone here feel like Barr is going to continue to grow or is he going to get squashed at the next level?

Critics say hes a one trick pony.. But i think he would thrive as a LEO in Gus' defense. I think #3 is a bit too high for him though.

I do as well, but if Clowney and Watkins are gone, who else do you take? I like Mack a lot, but I don't think he's going to be better than Barr. Also with this scenario, who is left to get people to trade up?

I think a lower round pick with very good speed will be drafted as the developmental LEO.

If we trade back to 7-8 yeah.

Not really a fan of Barr, he struggles shedding blocks and would be easily overpowered by NFL tackles. I would much rather have Mack in this scenario.

How much of that is just lack of experience though? I get your point, but the guy is as athletic as you could want a player to be. I think Mack may be a little better LB, but I don't think he has the athletic ability that Barr has.

It's going to be interesting to me to watch these two players develop professionally.

mack will be a monster in the nfl. anthony barr looks to me like he will be a so so player. lots of college production, but just doesnt have that higher level.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Agreed.  I'm not sure he has the strength to play DE/LEO at the next level.  Maybe it's technique related, but regardless he would get stuffed each time he couldn't beat his man around the edge.

But isn't that the point of the LEO? Just get to the edge, the Sam will take the inside fit and the DT will push.

I get your point about him needing to be more stout, but there are other ways to stop a run than simply stuffing a LT.

I'm not sure he consistently can.  He didn't jump out to me as this insanely explosive guy that is impossible to block.  It was like he had one move and if it didn't work, he was out of the play.  Offensive lineman in the NFL are going to be faster than what he's used to, so hard to say that he'll be as effective.

Not a Barr fan.  Although I only saw one game of his last year, he was getting pushed all over the place by the tackle.  It turned me off on him.

What are you smoking? Barr better than Mack? Come on man, you loose credibility when you make ridiculous comments like this.

Bigger, more production, better competition.

Where am I wrong?

They both hover around 250 LB's, Khalil Mack was far more productive and disruptive, albeit against lower competition, but he aboslutely dominated that competition the same way a guy by the name of Damarcus Ware dominated against lower competition while at Troy. Khalil Mack is more versatile and is more of a complete player, he rushes the passer better than Barr, sticks to tight ends/slot receivers in man coverage, and has good awareness in zone coverage, he's an absolute monster. There isn't a comparison at all, Khalil Mack will have an Von Miller like impact on the game right away, it will take Anthony Barr longer because he's raw, and isn't nearly as good.

Personally I don't see the what the fuss is about when it comes to Mack.  I think he has the potential to be the biggest bust in this draft.

LT?  Von Miller? He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.  And worst of all I am still waiting to see his "non stop motor."
