as a prospect because i just don't see it. All i keep hearing from everyone is the reason why not to take the QB at 3 because he isn't an Andrew Luck type prospect but Sammy Watkins isn't any of those elite guys as far as a talent and people keep clamoring for him at the same slot. He's a bigger version of desean jackson and that doesn't warrant the #3 pick overall but i guess everyone is so anti-quarterback that any player is a better pick than them. I don't get it.

 

I'm seeing him on around a similar level to Blackmon from a talent perspective, which means it wouldn't be prudent to pick him before the end of the first round.

 

Of course people tend to not evaluate guys from an absolute talent level and instead only compare them to the other guys at their position coming out of college. From that perspective people think, "hey, best WR in the draft, must be worth a top 5 pick, right?"

 

Like you said, though, compared to the talent in the league he's not an elite guy, and I don't like taking Blackmon level talents at positions like WR high in the draft.

He's not Megatron, Green, or Julio megastud because when we're scrutinizing to this level he is only 6'1'' and didn't run much of the route tree. However, he is a better prospect than Blackmon.

 

I am torn on him at 3. I really really like him, but I just don't see him having a bigger impact than Mack...whom I think are the two main candidates we'll be choosing from.

I agree. Mack can be a high level starter and consistent playmakeron our team for a decade. The only guy I'd take over him is Clowney.

I think you are underselling Watkins. He is a great prospect. Runs very good routes, good hands, great athleticism and elusive once he gets the ball

If Clowney wasn't in this draft and there weren't a QB circus, you'd hear much, much more about him.

 

Plus, it's a very deep WR crop in this draft.  If he were only one of a few at the top (like the Jones/Green year) he'd be much more talked about, too.

 

So please, guys... the comparisons are caliber talent.  NOT whether or not he's a physical "clone" of the other guys.  Sheesh.

I agree and I have been saying this for a while, there are other WRs in this draft just as good as Watkins that can be had later, but Watkins is the big name and has all the hype. I like Watkins but he is not some must have WR that some people are making him out to be.

Watkins caught his passes on a variety of routes, including quick screens to take advantage of his ability to make defenders miss in close quarters, deep passes due to his acceleration and jump balls to highlight his leaping ability and hand-eye coordination.

First off, i didn't say that anyone made those comparisons but i'm just making the analogy that if he's not one of them as far as talent in a deep receiver draft why pick him at #3.  If he is worth a selection at #3 why not the qb deserve the same consideration?

Every draft is different.  It's hard to say, "Well you can't drive player X here unless he is on the same level as a previous prospect".  Last year's draft was one of the more weaker ones in the top end, but a the end of the day you have to draft someone.
