Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)
|
This offense has to pass to run. It appears they did that today. It also appeared to me in the stands the play calls were in quicker giving the o-line and TL more time to eye ball the defense. Pass protection was consistent today. Run blocking is still a work in progress. We averaged less than 3 yards a carry if you pull out Tank;s one 65 yarder.

OL played well again. Lawrence is getting more comfortable and he's playing better. Some of the playcalling near the end of the game still has me scratching my head.

It's obvious that we should be running a "modern west coast offense" to start games. Play to your strengths. Ground and pound is not our strength. It never has been. The offensive game plan today looked like they finally decided to let Trevor get comfortable throwing easy balls early. Get some easy throws to your talent. ETN isn't washed. He can do great things in open spaces. He's not a home run hitter, but he knows how to get positive yardage when he doesn't have to run straight up the middle on a 7 man front. The whole game plan was well schemed out. Trevor did great. But the whole team looked dialed in.
I'm very happy that we finally got Trevor to perform like a franchise NFL QB this Sunday.
His interception was just terrible overall, throwing into triple coverage - but I'll let it go with our first win of the season. We finally saw some progression; both in his game and going through his reads, minus the failed 3rd down conversion where he locked in on the flat where Davis was open in the deep crosser and also the INT. This is the type of game that I have wanted Trevor to exhibit consistently - so here's to hoping he can continue to build on this performance and keep it going for each game going forward. I wasn't even mad at the int I liked the agression though I think Gabe/Kirk was open below but thats okay. I liked that he was sure of himself and letting it rip with quick decisions definitely looked great today. Doug take the points!!
No Fun

He was zoned in on the WR and CB, WR got a step on the CB but he didn't see the safety tracking the play from the snap. The safety ran a cut-off route and beat the WR to the ball. It was tunnelvision, but it also was an outlier. I ain't gonna freak unless it's a trend. The safety left his zone elsewhere to undercut the route as soon as he saw Trevor commit. Good safety play and TL lost the Saftey in traffic/ didn't look him off.
I think Trevor just had his first complete/great game. That was a masterful game. It wasn't perfect, but if thats the QB we get from here on out, we can go places. O line looked a bit better as well.

In Week 5,
+ Trevor Lawrence had a 97.1% catchable throw rate. + Josh Allen had a 43.3% catchable throw rate. https://x.com/ScottBarrettDFB/status/184...0009381937 (10-07-2024, 09:33 AM)NYC4jags Wrote:(10-07-2024, 09:12 AM)Mikey Wrote: ....he hit that WR later and he fumbled. Correcting my analysis here. Just saw the play again. They lined up BTJ in the z spot with a RB lined up wide beyond he and Davis to the right. The colts are in Quarters/Cover 4 with each of the four DBs playing off and assigned a quarter of the field to pick up whichever routes emerge to them. Looked like 2 LB and a nickel lined up shallow. BTJ pulls the safety Nick Cross with him as he turns to run the post route. The safety originally nearest BTJ before he made his cut also drifts deep behind him since the other routes in his zone were already picked up by others and making shallower breaks. (CB picked up Gabe and NB picked up the RB who looks like Johnson) Cross maintains good position between the receiver and QB and the ball ends up short and easy to pick. Trevor released it with quite a bit of anticipation that BTJ would be in the spot. Seeing that - It was probably either under thrown - or BTJ was meant to fight underneath instead of staying on top of the coverage. Hard to know which. It looks like BTJ intentionally chose to stay on top and expected the ball deeper. I'd guess TL saw the second safety shading over deep, hesitated to release it as deep as he should have and wound up short of his mark. The third defender coming in shallow at the end was simply the CB in Kirk's quarter - he only dropped into the area after the ball left Trevor's hands. TL;DR Bad throw against a rare instance of good zone coverage by the colts (10-08-2024, 07:28 PM)NYC4jags Wrote:(10-07-2024, 09:33 AM)NYC4jags Wrote: Yes - I wasn't going to point that out - glad someone did. TL;DR Trevor threw it into triple coverage. It was a bad decision, when he had a perfectly good check down to Strange. It was his only terrible decision. It was an ugly play. But those things happen in every game. He moved on from it. We should too. Overall, Trevor still looks like he's a franchise QB. I think that those in this thread that think Trevor isn't good have continued to be wrong. Time and time again. I guess every time we throw a screen pass that's throwing it into quadruple coverage since there's defenders "in the area", lol. You guys are doing a great job playing with our new Jay Dub.
