Can we talk about the D?

Colossal mistakes were made on Defense. Signing Armstead was a risk to begin with, he was injured. He is not playing great. You do not sign a third pass rusher or draft one. That alone should be a reason to fire Baalke. I am not sure what the injury was to Hamilton last year but you should have known that he is not the same player anymore. You play RRH until the 4th quarter in the preseason, you should have known he is regressing. You trusted Antonio Johnson at Safety, or you dont trust him but sign a guy that misses half the season. You hire a DC that wants to play man, whose defense cant get turnovers for that reason when in the past the defense was always shaky but came up with turnovers at opportune moments to safe the day. You draft three run-stuffing linebackers that cant cover in a passing league. You draft Walker over Hutchinson. The defense is giving up 33 points on average the last four games.

Having the secondary hobbled with injuries doesn't help any, but no secondary cant cover as long as the burrs had today. The Gabbert years were so very worse. They were completely devoid of talent. They were less disappointing, but sweet mercy were they depressing.

Yeah it has been his biggest FA blunder he's made, but he'd actually been pretty good in FA prior to this year. When you factor in SF asked Armstead to take a pay cut to something that amounted to peanuts for him to stay there, it's way worse. You don't make that offer to a guy you know is worth significantly more. It's an insult. You make that offer to a guy who is aging and injury prone but might have a little gas left in the tank and has already done a lot for your franchise. Meanwhile, we swing in with some way over the top offer. I'm sure SF's offer wasn't disclosed to Baalke prior, but it's still a big mistake. It feels like one of those "we're just this one player away" type moves. I don't mind bringing him in and taking the swing, but his deal is 3 years/$43.5 Million with a $24M dead cap hit next year and shouldn't have been anywhere near that. If he doesn't improve as the season goes along, it might be best to just post June 1st him in the offseason to split it up and get it over with. EDIT: Actually, nah, he's playing for peanuts cash wise next year as well. The salary really jumps in 2026. He'll be here next year barring injury. The Jags had to do something at DT in the offseason because Fatukasi was let go and Hamilton was not himself anymore. But they did not really do anything, because Armstead is playing a lot of end? Or they did not do anything at end if you count Armstead at DT. So that was the first mistake, this is without even knowing Armstead would struggle. Then you could have foreseen that he struggled after the injury and all you do is draft Maason Smith, a project. Thats on the GM. To be honest the really big mistake was not to get a 3rd end. Or they did get a 3rd end in Gipson but the wrong one. They could have resigned Smoot, he would have been the same price as Gipson and he is playing well for the Bills. Yeah, I wonder why they didn't re-sign Smoot? He always felt like a good character guy and also god enough as a 3rd guy.

The teams inability to defend 3rd and long is still crazy
Like not being able to trust a team to get off the field on 3rd & 10 or 3rd& 15 against a rookie qb or any qb is so mind boggling (10-20-2024, 02:25 AM)StrayaJag Wrote:(10-20-2024, 01:22 AM)Eric1 Wrote: https://twitter.com/Demetrius82/status/1...9210019156 Having #3 back helps, but yes. The best I could come up with was "on third down players make plays and the Jags watch them"

Actually the pats receiver did a good job of breaking up the INT - he got a hand on it and poked it out Would still love to see Tyson rip that one away, but it was well contested. I thought Tyson had a good game but I haven't had time to rewatch and focus on secondary yet. Maybe 3 completions allowed? Those stats should be out later today. One thing I did rewatch was the first quarter focusing on the safeties because I was curious how they'd mix it up. Andre Cisco played SS a bit more than FS in this game. They did interchange and disguise a bit - but they had Savage dropping and Cisco coming up on quite a few plays. I found that interesting. Cisco has played 95% of his snaps at FS up until that game. All I can say is at least they seem to be trying to figure out something on the back end. It isn't really working yet in terms of passing yards allowed, but they seem to be trying.

Availability trumps talent. Walker > Hutch. Baalke used his crystal ball there.
