We get the crap candidates. I’m of the firm belief that the NFL has blocked us from making homerun hires at the FO-level.
We only get to pick from the sub-par candidates, and can only manage to win if we somehow get lucky (11-03-2024, 11:14 PM)NewJagsCity Wrote: > so if you hire a crap firm that brings in a crap GM, that's better? What if you hire the exact same firm, and the second hire they make is mediocre? Yay us! You're just adding a new layer of scapegoat in this model. We need an EVP! We need a hiring firm! Why not just vox populi and let twitterers make your next hire? What's the bloody difference? You realize they overpaid a QB, are likely firing their coach, can keep anybody around, and has no postseason success to speak of this millennium? This all sounds so very, very familiar.
We need to get off Kahn.
Drafting college players is pretty much a crap shoot, art form, roll of the dice, you name it. No one is 100% look back 50-60% will be pretty much top of the heap. NO ONE can say how a young kid like that will react and perform as they transition to the professional level. That makes selecting a GM and HC a level of magnitude tougher than drafting. Also, unless you are the Rooneys it is a job that is actually never done.

Shad Khan has proven again and again to make bad decision for the team. Hiring Bradley, keeping Marrone and Hackett, Hiring Meyer, Hiring Coughlin, Keeping Baalke, considering Leftwich (is he even coaching these days) and keeping Pederson for too long. The real problem with this franchise is the ownership.
I genuinely think selling a minority stake to a football person would be so good for this team.

No former players lacking scouting backgrounds.

Rick Spielman is in media for a reason and he tried that with Tom Coughlin and it did not work. How much does it matter who he hires when the tone is set from the owner? When you feel like everyone in the org is lackadaisical, when employee can steal millions without anyone noticing ….

Good luck firing the owner.
Going to end up like a Tarantino film at the end of the season. People want everyone offed.
I can’t say how I truly feel about khans football operations acumen, or lack there of as I would earn a nice warning.
He is probably going to let Baalke convince him that it was ALL on coaching when it’s clearly a joint problem. Then no coach will want to come here and whoever does will be here when baalke hopefully gets fired after another losing year, and now the new GM will be forced to work within what system this coach implemented. It’s going to be an endless cycle until khan grows the fortitude to hire an EVP
I love kahn and we are lucky to have him.

So the reason we are content with Khan now is that, well we could be the Cowboys or Jets. The bar is really at ankle height right now.
Khan is not going anywhere, we all know that. He has invested a lot in the infrastructure in Jacksonville, he has invested a lot in London, where he also has a soccer-team and made a bid to buy Wembley Stadium. He does not need on-field success to make money. I do not doubt that he WANTS to win, he is trying. He is spending money on free agents (he approved to trade for Marcell Dareus mid-season for a massive contract just to make a run). Those are all great signs. I just think he does not know HOW to win. He seems to be relying too much on what people tell him instead of having his own informed opinion. And I think he needs help to guide him in the football world, how to hire the right guy, someone that knows that this is not the best roster of all time. A partner, where incentives are aligned. Therefore I think he should sell a minority stake of the Jaguars to the right partner that can run the team for him with the right football mindset.
VP of football operations is a needed position. Just cause coughlin struggled doesn’t mean this wasn’t the right idea overall.
To echo most people’s sentiments, he seems like he really cares about the city and about winning. He has just been very bad at putting the right people in place to accomplish the latter. He needs to hire an outside firm to find the best candidate for general manager.

I really like the idea of Boselli being the EVP, let him hire a 3rd party staff to help him consult with to find a GM and HC. I think Khan is ready to clear house and really make a move for perennial dominance. I'm not sure who I'd like as GM. But Ben Johnson, Detriot's OC, should be top of the list for HC.
The most appealing aspect of Boselli being EVP is you know he will tell it like it is. He's not a guy hindered by diplomacy. If Shad Khan wants the unvarnished truth, Boselli is the man.
