The Safety position

Whose instinctual in our safety room...what has good instincts?  Maybe Dewey..who isn't athletic enough.

Upgrading from Cisco...who is the only a safety who I think won't be back...is a must.    We're not bringing back Kirk so we're going to have the $$$ to upgrade the position.  The bar should be Derwin Jones.  A big, instinctual and fast safety that plays with his head on a swivel.

Unfortunately, it may have to come in the draft..

If he makes it to the 3rd round...I'm looking at Kevin Winston out of Penn State AND getting a free agent safety that will be on the Jags for 5 years.  Savage and Dewey aren't going to be on the team in 2 seasons and I haven't seen anything from Anthony Johnson to say he's going to be a regular starter when his rookie contract runs out.

Jags need safety help in the worst way.  Mostly because our LBs are crap in passing situations.

Savage = Ezra Cleveland on defense.    Good enough to be an average starter...but not good enough to be retained by his previous squad and it didn't take breaking the bank for the Jaguars to acquire his services.    A guy that you want a better player at the position.

Which is exactly where I think Cisco is THIS coming year.    Cisco = Savage of 2024.
Ezra Cleveland is 20x better at LG than Savage is at any position in the secondary.

Savage had maybe two good games at nickel and 15 bad ones at NB, SS& FS

I thought Savage was god awful this year.  I usually like trusting my own eyes, but I was curious about Savage so I checked out pff.  They had him ranked 156th out of 170 safeties.  Wow.

Savage was the only FA I was excited about. Admittedly, he absolutely sucked and I was wrong (I thought he would be a playmaker for us).... but Nielsen's defense did seem to have everyone out of position so, whatever.

The idea of a "prove it year" is total bull [BLEEP].  At the end of the prove it year, he's a free agent.  So if he proves it, we have to bid for him against other teams.  What good does that do us?

Generally "Prove it" deals are made with a second or third team after failing with the first team to obtain the player. Prove it deals after you've already been with a team for 3 or more seasons is just telling the player you don't really want him but will keep him for a low rate deal.

A prove it year is when you get a guy from another team on a one year deal.  Not a guy that's been here 4 years going on his 5th year lol. Your contract year is your prove it year.  Cisco was one of my favorite players but after this year it's time to go another direction and time for an upgrade.

Was the collapse due to him bulking up, or Nielsen's fartarific scheme? There's a chance we make an offer, but it seems dude has a specific fit.

Maybe not a prove-it deal, but you may get a discount in the short term if last year destroyed his valuation across the league. If he flourishes during that deal, the next one will be pricey.

These are the moves that earn good GMs their paychecks. Frankly, I don't know if I'd make the offer, or for how long if I did. Last year was such an enigma, I don't know how much was coaching and how much was talent vacuum.

Cisco will probably do well somewhere else and it will sting some. It would be great to see player development happen on the next iteration of whatever we get.

*thumbs up. I pointed this out a few years ago. Kennedy from the Titans. Owen Daniels from the Texans. Delanie Walker from Titans.

The list runs deep.

Marlon McCree still holds the record for most interceptions at the safety position = 6
