I choose the Gabbert trade.  I cannot believe Caldwell pulled off a trade for Blaine Gabbert.  The man is a miracle worker.

Maybe you are right, and maybe Maurice Jones-Drew is all washed up & with the horrible offense of the Raiders he will never again look as glorious as he did in a Jaguars uniform ... but maybe you are wrong and he might win player of the year this season...

I think it's a pretty safe bet that MJD won't be player of the year at the end of the season. The knee surgery a couple of years ago, and the Lisfranc injury on top of that are a good indication the rubber on those wheels is getting a little thin.  Add to that the fact that he came in out of shape last year, and it's clear you've got a guy who is starting to wind down.  He's not maintaining his conditioning in the same way Fred Taylor did toward the end of his career.  Fred was a specimen, and his regimen was one many players used to extend their careers.  MJD clearly hasn't maintained that level of focus on his physical conditioning. 

 

Right now, if we must judge Caldwell for the moves he's made this off season, I'd say the best move he has made is going out and getting the Seattle guys.  It's a smart move that didn't cost the team a huge chunk of change, and it gives you immediate starters, and guys who know the system.  

 

I think the truly best move he makes this off season has yet to be made, but to date, the Seattle signings are at the top of the list. 

 

The Gabbert trade was a good move, but not the best one.  Caldwell got something for a player we would most likely be cutting at some point after the draft.  It's a late round pick, but it's better than nothing.  It benefits the team, and it actually helps Gabbert.  He'll go to a team where the expectations won't be nearly as high as they were here, so the pressure is off.  If he somehow manages to turn it around there, that will suck, but it wasn't going to happen here, so at least he'll have an opportunity to try to salvage something in SF.
