I need to gather more information on the subject matter.

If the Jags do draft a guard I believe rackley could be on the chopping block

Rackley is there regardless.

Quote:Of course I would like Mack but I don't want it to be a ridiculous contract that might limit us within the next few years. What I did like about this news is that they are interested in picking up a starting center in FA. Brian de la Puente has since signed with the Bears though so I'm not really seeing any other good options. I just hate to go into the draft with 2 glaring holes on the line that absolutely have to be addressed.
Even if we front load the deal with 22 million the first two years we would still have a crap load of cap space, it's not a problem, we won't be hindered by it.

The real problem is that Cleveland will match almost anything short of an absolutely ridiculous deal no one would make. The smart thing to do would be to put up a $15 million, one year offer sheet that Cleveland will match and help Mack get more money the upcoming season, and have him repay us by giving us priority in next year's FA when he's an UFA.

Any new news on the Mack front?

Agree. I don't see how the Browns will not match any reasonable offer at this stage of game. All you could hope is to build some trust, so we can work with his agent again next year.

I was looking for any news on Mack and I came across the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, which had a pretty interesting idea for an offer sheet. Tucker mentioned offering Mack a one year deal that would be structured so that he couldn't be franchised next season. If the Browns match, we could go after him next season with Mack already having a very favorable opinion of us or Cleveland declines to match and can sign him long term at a later date. I don't think that would be considered a poison pill provision since Cleveland can match the offer too and it's definitely an interesting idea.

Forget about Mack he's stuck in Cleveland and will probably be a Jaguar next year.

Why??? He is depth, has started, and is cheap.

LOVE THEM JAGUARS!

The question isn't whether we can afford it - of course we can. However, throwing out contracts that pay a player 40-50% more than the next highest in the league is bad business regardless of if you have the money. It's not going to take 'just an overpay', it's going to take an overpay so big that the team that spent years drafting, developing, and investing in him (and also has the most cap room in the league) would say nevermind that's way too much.

Is that really the prudent thing to do? It's a very tough question.

Hmm. Interesting.

It's inferred by your post - but I assume having a player sign the tender does not negate the club's ability to use the franchise tag the following year.

I also assume, based on what Tucker said, that a team can put language in a tender offer re a future non-use of a franchise tag. I guess that's not considered a "poison pill".

This GM stuff can have many levels.

The real question is how much is too much?

Taking a look around the league the highest paid centers are Ryan Kahil and Nick Mangold. Both with contracts in the 50 million range with 19 and 16 mil guaranteed respectively. Would 25 million guaranteed be too much? Would Cleveland be willing to make Mack the highest paid center ever? Would we?

It does not, Cleveland could tender him again next season, just at an increased price. Also from my understanding, a poison pill provision is when the contract would be considered different for the two teams, like Nate Burleson's deal with Seattle where his entire deal was guaranteed if he played five games in Minnesota during one season.

Quote:You're acting like they're spending your money. You can't live in fear of what might happen a couple of years down the road and allow that to drive the decision making process, especially if you don't know for certain what's going to happen with the cap 2 or 3 years down the road.

You make smart decisions in free agency, and then you draft well. Signing a guy like Mack shouldn't take anything into consideration beyond whether the team can afford him, is he an upgrade, and is he a good fit. If the answer is yes, then you pull the trigger. If Cleveland matches that offer, so be it. At least they're looking at their options here.
I'm not acting like that at all. I want the Jags to be smart with the money they spend, that's all. Over spending DOES hurt teams. Maybe one contract won't, but if you maintain that mindset then you'll end up with a bunch of huge contracts and a lot of dead money counting against the cap. Its strategy in building a complete football team that I care about, not being frugal for frugalities sake.

That is interesting, but theres probably also a line of ethics Caldwell might not want to cross as for being detrimental to where the other 31 GM's lose respect for his business practices. (which could hurt in future potential trade dealings)

Or, maybe thats overrated and he just needs to go get it done in whatever way possible.

One way to structure a contract like that would be to include an opt out clause after the first year. If Cleveland matches and he isn't very happy with being there as the reports suggest he would have the opportunity to opt out of the contract and hit the open market again next year.
