Gene Smith Jr. is a complete and utter moron and should be fired immediately. Who trades a top 10 franchise LT for nothing with five weeks of the trade deadline left to go? Oh yeah, Gene Smith Jr.

 

The zone blocking argument is the weakest argument of all being that when Caldwell took over the team he had a handful of players to work around. It should have been easy to build around Monroe and if he wasn't fit for zone blocking he should have never hired that bum Fisch to begin with.

You guys do realize that those who critisize a decision by this franchise are always chastised on here, but the track record the past decade prooves those people were right the overwhelming majority of the time. Just cuz Caldwell thought it was a good move doesn't mean it was.

Yeah, I listened, did I miss the part where he said he didn't field any other offers? All I heard was that it came together quickly. If you believe that he did not you must also believe that he had a complete mental breakdown. As I said, IMO people are being completely naive if they think otherwise.

Well, it coming together quickly would also lead me to believe he wasn't exactly shopping him around. I don't know how it all went down, but I wish the trade would have been his idea, not another team calling him.

The part that they didn't even know he was available to be traded concerns me. Like they called right before Caldwell was about to wrap up the deal. How many teams could Caldwell have called with it coming together so quick? I don't know the answer, but as I said earlier, I wish Caldwell was the one proactively trying to trade Monroe instead of the idea coming from another team.

They're rapidly developing a track record, and it isn't pretty.


 

Caldwell: Skips signing a RT in a free agency with a record glut of good young RTs, drafts a LT when we already have one who is arguably the best player on the team. Then trades said existing LT for a bag of beans and a ham sandwich, when the draft pick has yet to show that he's any better.


 

Bradley: Takes over a mediocre team dragged down last year by bad coaching, and gets even worse results. In fact, the Jags are on track to be the worst team in NFL history. Some of that is coaching; Bradley's hand picked OL coach certainly since the Jags added a franchise OT and a promising young guard who showed major improvement at the end of 2011 to three starters from 2012 who played much better last year.

That's an oft-used excuse. For the first 2-3 years of Gene it was always "he hasn't had enough time". It's obvious I wasn't trying to indicate anything in the history of Caldwell and Bradley, just that history shows us that there are homers on this board that support every decision made by this franchise, and are unable to be impartial.

If he played the rest of the year like a top 10 OT which he has been doing for the last 3 years, you dont let him go, you tag him and play hardball. He has more to lose than the team.

 

Monroe wasn't Caldwells investment. If they weren't going to sign him, then making the trade is the only option. Of course, I don't know that answer, but based on what they did, it does not look like they were going to resign him.


And this is where your opinion starts to lose credibility. If we upgrade from 10-15 LT to top 3 LT, then it is a fantastic return on the investment. You made a major upgrade and get two picks in return.


I was disappointed when I heard he didn't shop him around. That is something I don't get.

 

Monroe was the teams asset, that means he is Caldwell's asset. This isnt the Jacksonville Caldwells, just because he wasnt drafted by Caldwell, doesnt mean he has no value.

 

Also, thats a huge if we are banking on to make this trade worth while and even if Joeckel becomes Tony Boselli who plays RT now? Will the combo of Joeckel and rookie/FA be better than Monroe and Joeckel? Thats a tough ask.

Yep.   It all comes down to this ^ and we won't fully know the answer for a loooong time.  Especially if a rookie ends up at RT next year.

You also have to think about where this RT is picked up?

 

If we use a draft pick higher than what we received or sign an FA to the sort of big money deal we could have paid Monroe, we have just sharted value.
