We Don't Need Sammy Watkins

Quote:There could be a WR who is the next Jerry Rice and you would not wanna draft him

Not true. I just said I don't want to draft a WR at 3 in this draft. I wouldn't mind Watkins or Evans drafted by the Jags after a trade down.

lol, Watkins ain't going to be no Jerry Rice, either...

This coming from a Eagles fan, i never said Sammy was gonna be a Rice, Watkins is gonna be a nice fine solid stud in the NFL, and we need a WR, if Bradwell think's he's the best and highest rated player, i rather take the best player available than reach for a need.

The value of Mack + Adams/Moncrief is way better than Sammy + LEO

So many quality WRs with #1 potential will be there in the 2nd round. Not many top notch pass rushers past that long.

Moncrief has shown nothing that should make you believe he has "#1 potential".

Considering our WR situation, with Blackmon a question mark and Shorts in the final year of his deal, I like the idea of Watkins at 3. He won't be there after 5, imo, so you can't trade down and expect to get him.

If the Jags don't trade down, you can mark Evans off the list as well, he won't be there in round 2.

The later rounds may have plenty of WR talent but without Blackmon we have no true #1. Without Shorts, if he leaves, we have even more questions. The late round WRs, with all the depth this draft has at WR, don't offer a legit #1 target.

"But what about pass rusher?"

That can be addressed in round 2 and again in 2014, possibly in round 1.

There are a lot of things we don't know about this team yet. How the additions will impact the D. The hopeful continued growth of Branch (and Davis), etc. What we do know about this team is the offense isn't great. We know that Blackmon will likely still be suspended for some time. We know that Henne will likely be starting at QB and that he needs help.

At pick 3, I like Watkins. I also wouldn't be mad at with the selection of Mack. Anyone else at 3 would actually leave me surprised at this point. (I think Clowney will be gone)

Although if for some reason Clowney and Watkins are available I think a trade down to 6 or 10 becomes a real probability. With the extra picks gained from a move such as this, I'd be more comfortable with the selections of Evans, Bridgewater, Manziel in this area.

Back on point though. Watkins isn't Jerry Rice. But he would immediately give this offense an impact player that we desperately need. And sometimes you can't split hairs over picking such a player 3rd overall or 6th overall.

A rookie QB or pass rusher LIKELY will sit behind a vet until ready. Watkins steps in day 1 and makes us not worry about when/if Blackmon is returning.

If by some miracle Blackmon can play week 1 (I think more likely after an 8 game suspension to start 2014) we have a very dangerous young duo in Blackmon and Watkins, and some solid guys in Shorts and Ace behind them.

Ace is a slot receiver. Blackmon is a dumbie, and Shorts can't play an entire season. We don't NEED Sammy, but we do need an outside receiver or two

I'm not a fan of taking him at 3. But if they take him I want be upset. Without Blackmon our WR core it's kinda meh. If we knew the status of Blackmon and it was a sure thing he's back on the team at the start of the season, I wouldn't see a need for a WR till between rds 3-5.

Jordan Matthews will be the best WR of this class.

Quote:Jags are in a great draft spot really. I know that seems obvious but they have alot of flexibility. The downside is they have a few big needs.

If Blackmon had not screwed up so badly I would agree with this thread. But imo, Jax needs a #1 wr.

Agree strongly......still want Clowney though.....hope Houston takes a QB

First of all, you cannot compare Ace Sanders to Sammy Watkins. Secondly, I do agree with you in the matter of us not needing to take our 3rd overall selection on Sammy Watkins. Blackmon comes back in 8 games and I do not think we are ready to throw the towel in on that 5th overall selection. Blackmon will smarten up under Gus. Cecil is solid 2nd receiver on any team. I would definitely much rather spend that 3rd overall selection on a QB or OLB. Hopefully, a team like Detroit or Tampa will trade up with us to take Watkins. We would gain a 2nd round pick and still be able to take an Anthony Barr or Johnny Manziel potentially.

I like the idea of selecting Matthews at pick 39, or DeVante Adams.

Also, the fact that WR is probably the deepest or one of the deepest positions in this draft, makes it even stupider for us to waste our 3rd overall pick on Watkins. Just saying.

You can have told Detroit the same thing when they picked Johnson considering Williams was a pro bowler, they had picked three in 5 years in the top ten and passed on Pat Willis, Gaines Adams and LaRon Landry and Jamaal Anderson

That is a flawed way of looking at it.

"we don't need Watkins because we have Ace Sanders???"

Yeah...that was my reaction to this, too.

I like Ace Sanders too (I know you aren't crazy about him), but he doesn't compare with Watkins in terms of potential as a WR.

Not even close.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Ace has his niche, its not a outside receiver. Ace is the guy Fisch will creatively try to get the ball in space to make plays.

Thats like saying the Chiefs don't need Dwayne Bowe because they have Dexter McCluster.

I rolled on the floor laughing, With all those missed reads in the pocket Manziel had to improvise. If he had just stuck to the play book (or just be Teddy Bridgewater) A&M would have been in the National Title hunt late

I have a strong feeling that the Rams will take Sammy Watkins with Pick 2 and he will be off the board

I watch the Patriots fall one win away from the Super Bowl last year, with nothing but a bunch of scrubs at WR, and I watch the Seahawks win the Superbowl in convincing fashion with average WR's, and it tells me that I don't need to spend the number 3 overall pick on a WR in a WR rich draft.

Unless he's Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, or Larry Fitzgerald, I'm going elsewhere.
