If Gene Smith was picking at 3, we would waste this pick!!!

Haha!

Mack or Bridgewater.

He would reach for a DT like Aaron Donald or Jernigan. Or take Derek Carr.

Blake Bortles

Quote:If Gene Smith was drafting at pick 3 in this years draft who would he pick? I personally think he would draft the LB Mack, small school thing..lol
Gene would either trade down and a less than reasonable deal like an extra 2nd & 3rd round pick only... or he would take the safe bet and draft the OT at #3, since I feel the texans will draft clowney (unless they shock us and get a qb but if that is the case the rams will either draft clowney or a team will trade up for him)... after he traded down he would sign the best punter in the league or kicker..

If Gene were here...

Gabbert would not have been traded, and Gabbert/Henne would live on at least for another year.  I think he would be taking Watkins at #3, assuming Clowney is not available.

Gene never drafted small school in the first round, he did that in 2-7. As others said he would've went "safe" in the 1st. My guess would be Jake Matthews.

Khan made that 1st round pick, overrid Gene Smith's first round pick duties.

Quote:Pfft he was known for playing it safe in the first round, he'd probably take Bridgewater.

That certainly wouldn't be safe, but I agree that would probably be his pick.  He'd jump for a QB because of need, especially since some feel he'll drop.

Cover your eyes if you don't want to re-live the horror of the GS era.

Gene Smith had 6 picks in the first two rounds.

Monroe, Britton, Alualu, Gabbert, Blackmon and Branch.

2 x ACC

2 x Pac12

2 x Big12

Other than Alualu, I don't think any of them would be considered reaches at the time the pick was made. All from major conferences.

Based on that,  I'd think Matthews, Robinson, Watkins would fit the bill.

If you think about it, Gene's only real whiff in the first round is Gabbert.

Monroe was a solid pick.

Alualu hasn't played up to draft pick, but has been a solid pro.

Blackmon is a beast when he's actually playing.

The miss on Gabbert gets amplified because he's a QB that we traded up to get.
