Pre Draft Speculation-MMQB - Jags really like Garoppolo

Quote:David err, Derek Carr is nowhere on Houston's entire draft board. I can almost promise you this. You'd be mistaken if you don't think the experience they had with David isn't going to reflect poorly on Derek to them. They won't select Derek if he fell to them in the 2nd/ 3rd/ 4th/ 5th/ 6th or even 7th round. Perhaps as an undrafted free agent they might bring him in as one of the 15 or so.

There's no "they" in Houston as you keep implying.  "They" are long gone.  You act like you are privy to Houston's draft board.  You haven't a clue, just as is the case in pretty much ANY discussion.  You speak with authority spouting your opinions, but in the end, you're just a clueless fry cook trying to keep the hair from your ever expanding forehead from getting in the food.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Now you're tap dancing.

You said David Carr's traits run in the family, and that's why YOU wouldn't pick him.    So if that is the logic you are using, I assume you would pick James Wilder, Jr.   After all, his father was a pretty good player.  Right?    According to you, family traits are strong  enough to determine future success.   That's what you said.

Oh, give it up, man.  You cannot defend that position.   David Carr's failure has nothing to do with Derek Carr.   Derek Carr should be, and will be, selected or not selected on his own merits.   First round, 7th round, or undrafted.   It has nothing to do with his brother.

Quote:Scout compares Garoppolo to Hasselbeck

Jimmy Garoppolo | CLG

(April 14, 2014 4:04 PM EDT)

Speaking to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, a scout compared Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo to Matt Hasselbeck.

"You can win with him," was the scout's succinct summary. Garoppolo is considered a first-round dark horse, but will almost certainly slide to day two. SI's Peter King reported Monday that the Jaguars "really like" Garoppolo. Garoppolo has drawn kudos for his footwork and release, but struggles when chaos comes to the pocket. Standing in at 6-foot-2, 219 pounds, there are also questions about his arm strength.

We could certainly do worse than Matt Hasselbeck.

Yup give me a QB that leads us to the playoffs every year, thats all I want, chasing the next Manning and Brady is foolish, its reason Brady and Manning are still 2 of the top 5 QBs in the NFL after 15 years, Great QB's are hard to find.

Agreed.  We just need to find a guy who is a good fit for what Gus and Co. want to do with this offense.  We don't need Manning or Brady for that, and the odds of finding one, especially in this draft, are non-existent.

They added Garoppolo to the Senior Bowl roster.  They wanted an extended look at him.  They clearly saw something they liked.  Whether that's good enough for them to sit on QB until later in the draft or not remains to be seen, but the notion that we have to grab Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles in order for this to be a good draft is a little off target.  There's not a huge drop off from the top 3 to the next tier in this draft.  We'll find someone we can develop.  And if it doesn't pan out?  Next year shows promise.

I do think the Jags take a QB in the 2nd round. Draft the BAP first and find a QB at pick 39.

Jimmy G is the best QB behind Teddy and Manziel.

I think you could lump him in the 2nd tier guys.

IMO:

Garoppolo

McCarron

Carr

Mettenberger

All have the intangibles to be a franchise QB but all need some time to develop and work out their kinks. If you're expecting them to be day 1 starters you're going to be highly disappointed.

I think Jimmy is a better prospect than Johnny, but I don't like Johnny much. My picking order: Teddy, Mett, Bortles, Carr, Garoppolo, Manziel, Murray.

Im convinced people have never seen Jimmy G play if they are speaking this nonsense.

I completely agree with you here.  Get us to the dance enough and hope the team gets hot and makes a run.  The Giants did it...twice.  Eli Manning is not on the level of Brady or his brother Peyton, nobody has been able to convince me otherwise.  He's not what I would call an 'elite' or 'franchise' QB.  He's good.  Plenty good enough to lead a team with a strong defense to the playoffs.  Once you're in all it takes is for a team to get hot, great coaching, a combo of the two, whatever you want to call it but it happens.  If you happen to land a guy like Manning it can speed up the process considerably but it doesn't guarantee you many championships...we've seen that.  Last years Seattle Seahawks are a perfect example.

Teams win championships more often than one or two individual players will win a team a championship.  Once again last years Seattle Seahawks are a prime example.  That team is loaded, Russell Wilson is a good QB.  They have good coaching...they beat down Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

I'd be willing to bet that Bortles has a terrible rookie season, i'm talking maybe 10 TD passes 15+ ints.

Manziel shows things that could be nothing, but could also be something we say "it was so obvious, we should've known". I love watching Manziel, but he has flaws. When throwing over the middle of the field, Manziel's footwork goes to hell. Causes all sorts of accuracy issues. I'd like to think it could be fixed, but I don't know. That's why I have to drop him down my board. All of these QB have major flaws, hence why I don't want us to pick any high.

You make a great point, something I myself can't seem to shake. It's what I call the "best case scenario" scenario.

Let's say all these guys translate to the NFL and play just as good in the pros as they did in college.

I don't think we'd necessarily be knocking ourselves over the head if the Mettenbergers, Garrapolos, Bottles, perhaps not even the Bridgewater play as good as they did. But if, and that's a big IF, but if Manziel can do half the things he did in college, we'll be looking back thinking "duh". We'll be the NfL-version of the Texas Longhorns.

Never forget Manziel as a kid always wanted to go to Texas, but Mack wouldn't even give Johnny a scholarship at QB for 3 main reason:

Quote:1)Even though Texas recruiter Duane Akina thought he could succeed, Mack infamously thought Manziel was too short for collegiate football(ie, his highschool game wouldn't translate)

2)Johnny had gotten into some trouble in highschool

3)Longhorns were moving to a more pro-set offense and recruited 6'3 David Ash over Manziel
And the rest is as we say history, Mack's out of a job, and teams in the NFL are going to have to decide if those same 3 "reasons not to draft Johnny" are viable anymore.

I just think it's funny because after the kid won the heisman, there came multiple reports and stories absolutely lampooning the Texas's, Florida's, and Oregon's of the world for not offering the kid a scholarship, and saying "if we only knew what we know now". Well history is repeating itself.

And so you may be right GUSbus, it might not work out for Manziel this time, but dam, I really-really-really hope we aren't the Longhorns of the NFL, looking at one of our instate or division rivals succeed with a guy we overlooked.

I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

lol, nobody on these boards have seen him play. He played in the "Ohio Valley Conference". I'm pretty sure he didn't have a single game nationally televised.

Listen, I've given Teddy and Bottles some crap in the past about playing weaker competition in the AAC. But now I feel bad. I mean guys, we are talking about like JU football level of competition here. Few quarterbacks would have more of a culture shock than Jimmy, going from the Ohio Valley conference to NFL sundays.
