Casino lawsuit claims gambler won $9.6M in baccarat card-cheating scheme

TLANTIC CITY, N.J –  An Atlantic City casino is suing a big-time gambler, claiming he won $9.6 million in a card-cheating scheme in baccarat.

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Phillip Ivey Jr., considered one of the best poker players in the world.

The lawsuit alleges Ivey and an associate exploited a defect in cards made by a Kansas City manufacturer that enabled them to sort and arrange good cards in baccarat. The technique gave him an unfair advantage on four occasions between April and October 2012, the casino asserted in its lawsuit.

He is very well known in the poker world. I wonder what other repercussions may happen, like if he'll be banned from other casinos and events.

It's his fault they're using defective cards, give me a break, it's not his job to do their job for them.

He's a professional poker player, he makes his money off of casinos. Just a casino warning their money back. But I do wonder if there will be other ramifications, like other casinos not wanting him in their house or not,

Some countries have a law where a person can be held responsible for something if they can reasonably suspect what they're doing is illegal. Like if a man offers you to sell a car worth $20,000 for only $1,000 and he doesn't have the keys, even though you didn't take part in the original crime, a normal person would realize there is something not right with the deal.

Baccarat is a game of chance as defined by law. So not being a "skilled trade" or other regulated occupation, the Casino accepts that chance is reflected for both Casino and Player. The outcome is chance.

A flaw in the product supplied by the Casino in presenting the game is borne totally by the Casino. Their complaint is with the manufacturer of said product that they purchased and provided. Not with the player. If the player provided their own cards, then there is intent to defraud.

So if a player is skilled enough to exploit the flawed product provided by the Casino, then "Chance" did not favor the House.

It will depend what "special" laws that Casino Owners "Mob" has had pushed through the N.J. state legislature/ Gambling Commission.

Being raised in New Orleans, I fully understand that the House has the upper hand and will exploit and opportunity to have Chance favor them, including banning said individual from the house.

Agreed.

I'm guessing there is some sort of law like DragonFury stated earlier in Vegas.  There is no way the Vegas lobbyists haven't gotten that to pass.

I wonder how it got out that is how he won.  I would have thought he would have kept it to himself.  He did something similar in England as well, and I believe he is getting sued there.

If the casino was using cards or dice or any other implement used in gaming which were against the rules their license would be revoked. I don't see how the casino can prove Ivey used the defective cards to his advantage instead of just being a superstitious and lucky player.
