In my own "little world", I had just assumed that Shad Khan was doing some favorable things in the league that may have impressed the 42 million a year commissioner, like volunteering his team to play a home game in London for 4 straight years, not to mention, playing his teams BEST home game in London.

 

I guess I just expected a little more "you scratch my back, i'll scratch your back" in the resulting schedule this year. This may be just what we needed though to let us know how far away we really are from being a team other fans are upset about playing when they look at their schedules for the first time.

I'm with you.  I prefer the 1:00 games.  The prime time tilts are fun on occasion, but they tend to be  more of a burden for those of us who actually have jobs.  I'm not burning my PTO to recover from a late night at EverBank.

 

I don't think there's any grand conspiracy here where the schedule is being used to force the franchise to move.  I think they just have little regard for the smallest market in the league.  It's nothing more than that.  In order to get further consideration from the league in the future, the team has to be relevant.  That hasn't been the case for several years now.  Hopefully our fortunes are about to change, but until they do, expect crappy schedules.

The Jags are a special case, what with the London game/following bye, the FLA/GA game to work around, and the Fair to work around.

 

Add that to the fact that the Jags have no national appeal right now and the schedule we got is probably as good as could be expected.

Every time I see a prime game being a home game played overseas it stirs up memories of things like an episode of shingles, being attacked by chiggers, a horrible hangover, etc. And still two more years to go. Aaaargh.


In reality? We fans are pissed, but as for the rest of the country, those fans don't give a rats [BLEEP] about seeing the Jags. We don't have the history of other small market teams, and more importantly, have sucked hind end for years.

The NFL wants ratings. Jags vs Browns on prime time won't get them. Neither will giant scoreboards and swimming pools.


The scoreboard and pools , with a losing team, is like living in a mansion with a woman you can't stand.


Win, and prime time will come. No more, no less.

I think if we have a good season there is a chance that we get either the November Colts game or one of the December Texans games flexed depending on who is leading the South.  Obviously we would have to play well enough to be in contention for the division.

As the schedule has sunk in it occurs to me that there really is an opportunity here for something of a coming out party.  We have been the league's whipping boy for years.  This year we are playing teams from the vaunted NFC East and AFC North.  While technically the NFC West is probably the best division this year most people still perceive the NFC East and AFC North as the power divisions.  Think of how much fun it will be to see fans of those teams pulling their hair out if they lose to us.  We all know that when those teams saw their schedule every single one of them checked the Jags game as a win for them.

 

A good schedule.

Yeah, I'm thinking the odds of the Jags getting anything better than they did is a stretch.  The team is an afterthought in the national perspective, so they're always going to end up on the short end of any arrangement involving the schedule. 

 

Winning and identifying stars who will have broad appeal will certainly help change the perception, and as that happens, the Jags will start to see more favorable schedules affording the team national exposure.

The schedule could be great or could be really bad. If the Jags are competitive early and keep getting better, Oct has lots of home games and 3 of the last 5 at home. If the Jags get off to a bad start and don't improve, you setup a situation to have a lot of empty seats for a lot of the home games.

My issue is the way they screwed us out of the gate by giving us 2 straight road games to open the season, and 4 road games in the first 6. 

 

Thats essentially a death sentence for a team trying to rebuild and ascend record-wise.

I curse you Wayne Weaver for putting them up there in the first place and in the early 2000's when he not lift the blackouts even in situations when we was short by 3000 tickets to send a message to the city. Instead you sent a message to the rest of the league and gave us a black eye that we can't shake until this every day because of it. I love him because of his loyalty to the city but he made some bad decisions during his tenure as a NFL Owner that done a disservice not only to this city but to this franchise as a whole.

Regardless of the perception, the tarps were probably the smartest thing this franchise did during that period.  The stadium was too big for the market.  Right sizing the facility to bring it more in line with what the market could support was the right move.  

 

I didn't even have a problem with Weaver not bailing the fans out by snapping up the remaining tickets, allowing the blackouts.  The fans needed a kick in the shorts.  The blackouts we did have to endure were necessary to assure we didn't see them again.  The tactic worked.  We haven't had a blackout in years, although you'd be hard pressed to see that anywhere in the media.
