Would Khalil Mack in the top 5 feel like a "Gene Smith type of pick"?
|
Quote:you love the eagles right? how about danny watkins in the first from baylor? then the second round pick from temple, third round pick from utah st in 2011. second round pick from marshall in 2012. thats just the first team i looked at and took me 4 seconds. was that a triple lutz? #brianboitano No, I don't love the Eagles, actually. Danny Watkins was a stupid pick. Probably helped get Reid fired. Using other teams is merely moving the goalposts. We're talking about Gene Smith's background here and comparing that if Mack was our pick. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Other than the Cox trade, Smith didn't draft small early.
Last year, Caldwell spent the 33rd pick on a player from the Sun Belt. Taking Mack in the top 5 would be (dare I say it), a "Dave Caldwell type of pick".

Quote:And Gene Smith didn't really dip into the small school pool moreso than any other teams/GMs over the same span It's only an issue when it doesn't work out. I wonder how many 49er fans complain they took a guard from Idaho in the first round or a left tackle from Central Michigan.
Quote:No, duece had a valid point. Probably one of the dumbest arguements I've seen on this board. Gene picked small school players basically from round 2 on...not just small school players, but guys most people had never heard of. We are talking about a first round pick that has been discussed by every single draft expert as being in the top 5. Talk about reaching to make yourself feel better. Gene picked small school players basically from round 2 on...not just small school players, but guys most people had never heard of. Let's face facts here. TMD is nothing more than the Gene Smith of this message board. He fancies himself to be the smartest guy on the board. Just ask him. Gene Smith always felt he was the smartest guy in the room. More often than not, he was fully exposed for being so epically wrong. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:Gene's biggest problem was that he reached badly for players he wanted, specifically small school players. He didn't really draft a disproportionate amount of small school players. He was just playing the smartest man in the room role. The board kind of latched on to the small school thing and railed every time he drafted a small school player. TMD won't respond to this because this is the true story. Just because you pick a guy from a small school doesn't make it a "Gene pick". Gene picked guys from small schools way too often and it failed. Caldwell has stated he's a big school guy.

I've already admitted in the thread that its not an "identical" comparison to a pick like Alualu, but it is a lesser form of a similar concept. People cite "rankings" of the player which have the player currently around 5 or so, but has Mack been there this whole time? Nope. He pretty much rose late to get him there. Gabbert did the same thing. Ratings mean little unless they show a consistent placing at the top, such as Clowney. The small school concern is real with Mack. Doesn't mean he's destined to fail, but theres a risk. People instead are quick to latch on to Ware as the outlier and automatically assume Mack will be that. Quote:I've already admitted in the thread that its not an "identical" comparison to a pick like Alualu, but it is a lesser form of a similar concept. well this mock is from november of last year http://nflmocks.com/2014-nfl-mock-draft/ has him at 7. http://www.draftace.com/mockdraft/ november of last year has him at 6. http://www.footballsfuture.com/2014/nflmockdraft.html november. december here has him at pick 2 http://www.draftking.com/mock/2014/ andddddddd december here has him going 4th.... http://thefootballexpert.com/mock-draft/ edit: doesnt sound like a late riser to me at all.

Quote:I've already admitted in the thread that its not an "identical" comparison to a pick like Alualu, but it is a lesser form of a similar concept. It is absolutely nothing like the Alualu or Gabbert situations. Alaualu was never looked at as a potential top ten pick. And Gabbert fell progressively as the draft got closer. When he declared, Gabbert was considered to be more likely the first pick than even Cam Newton. You're not making sense. Clearly, he's risen from 7 to the top 3 of late. So, he's magically come out of nowhere as a projected top 10 pick 6 months ago to a top 5 pick today. This guy is a shooting star. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:I have no problem with the Jags trading back to 6, collecting more picks, and selecting Mack there. 1. 1. its 3 spots. 2. thats where he was 6 months ago. before the combine and before other players declared or decided to go back to school. So after a few guys at the top dropped out and the rest of the process sorted the picks a little better, weird, he is valued now as a top 5 pick instead of a top 7 pick. pretty insane late rise.

If the players Gene picked from small schools were good no one would care.
