Top 10 American Musicians of All Time

#1
(This post was last modified: 04-24-2014, 05:17 PM by HolsterHusto.)

As the title states, who do you guys think are the top 10 (excluding Dy-lan, Dy-lan, Dy-lan) greatest American musicians/bands of all time? Mine would be...

1. Elvis

2. Michael Jackson

3. Hendrix

4. Bob Dylan

5. Ray Charles

6. Beach Boys

7. Chuck Berry

8. Johnny Cash

9. Frank Sinatra

10. Kurt Cobain/Nirvana

I have Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Lil Richard, The Doors Joplin, and CCR just missing the cut.

It's a slow day at work so I thought this be a fun debate.

Is this our personal favorites?  Or who we think are the BEST regardless of our own tastes?

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

How in the hell is Elvis number one? He didn't even write most of his own songs...

Not even sure he was an actual musician. He's essentially a one man "New Kids On the Block" well before their time. His claim to fame was having a look and dancing suggestively on stage, oooh wow, yeah, great musician..... He wasn't even all that great of a vocalist at all.

The only list Elvis should top is the most overrated list

The best regardless of our own tastes. I guess you could say most influential, hence Elvis as number 1.

Wow, this is a good one. I haven't been around long enough to appreciate a lot of these suggestions. But I feel jimmy, Aretha , cash, Jackson and Elvis should definitely be on the list. For a 32 yr old man to name these guys, that's got to say something about their talents. Right?

Big fan of the Beach Boys, huh?

Interesting because I'd have them on my list as well only because Brian Wilson is a phenomenal song writer, and he's pretty much insane.

Your list is more a top 10 musical acts, and not so much musicians.  If it's musical acts, I'd probably go with something along the lines of this (not in any particular order):

Beach Boys / Brian Wilson

BB King

Jerry Lee Lewis (brilliant pianist)

Frank Sinatra

Elvis

Willie Nelson (phenomenal song writer)

Billy Joel

Johnny Cash

Stevie Ray Vaughan

The Eagles

A few extras I'd probably include since they were all a big part of my rotation in college:

REM

Marvin Gaye

Otis Redding

He's not American, but close enough - Bob Marley (no album can change my mood as effectively as Legend)

Muddy Waters

Hendrix

CCR

The Smithereens (okay, only because I got to know their lead singer, but the guy is a phenomenal talent)

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Good catch, meant to put Sinatra at 9.

I almost added REM as well.

Billy Joel was pretty good in his time, too. Great songwriter and lyricist. Knew how to reach the common person.

Actually, Elvis was a pretty accomplished pianist, so you're incorrect.

Elvis is so damn overrated its not funny.

He's remembered for making the teeny bopper girls swoon, lets face it. As a musician, pretty damn average. Didn't write many of his songs, just okay voice, ok so he played a little piano allegedly.... He still belongs nowhere near a list like this.

Allegedly?  Classic.

He played the piano during his concerts.  There's plenty of video of him "allegedly" playing the instrument.

As far as him being overrated, go out and Google the greatest musicians of all time.  He'll be on pretty much every list you dredge up.  He's not overrated.  He, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a handful of others completely transformed the music business.  That can't be dismissed.  He's no more overrated than someone on your list by the name of Michael Jackson, only Jackson didn't really transform a genre other than by music video, or via pedophilia.

If you'd like to discuss overrated, look no further than your own list.  Bruce Springsteen is arguably one of the most overrated musicians on the planet.  The guy looks and sounds like he's pinching one off when he sings.  The only reason he's on your list is because people in New Jersey are notorious for having zero taste in music.  They worship this guy like he's something special.  I'm shocked you didn't put Bon Jovi on your list too.

Thats because sheep continue to throw him on lists like these and treat him that way even though he doesn't belong. At all.

He, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a handful of others completely transformed the music business.

Thats an insult to Cash, Lewis and the handful of others. Elvis was a sock puppet.

Elvis. Overrated. Period.

Oh and Springsteen's writing earns him a spot there. You know, something Elvis rarely did,....
