ESPN's Chris Mortensen stated on SportsCenterFriday that he's "heard more than twice" the 49ers could be "ready to do something big" in May's draft.


49ers GM Trent Baalke is working with 11 picks, including six selections in the top 100, so he has plenty of ammo to execute a trade up. Mort suggested the 49ers targeting Texas A&M WR Mike Evans, perhaps with a move into the top five. Mortensen said Oakland is "open for business" at No. 5 overall, and compared the hypothetical scenario to Atlanta's 2011 trade up for Julio Jones. Anquan Boldin is entering his age-34 season; Michael Crabtree is in a contract year.

The jump from the bottom of the draft to the top is quite costly.

 

On a side note, I doubt the 49ers look to trade with the Jaguars. Probably a franchise more susceptible to making cheap deals ala Oakland.

But to be objective every other team can say the 49ers traded for Gabbert, thus enticing the rest of the league as well.

For conversations sake lets assume that the compensation is for what the link suggests, similar to the Julio Jones trade.

I don't know if I would bite.

 

While the future 1st round pick is enticing, the fact is the 49ers are good enough to where that would be a late 1...which would essentially be a 2nd round pick.  Just like this year's first round pick, and like their 2nd round pick is like a 3rd rounder.

If Caldwell isn't in love with any of the top prospects then that's a deal that I'd make with another 3rd rounder thrown in.

I doubt it. Caldwell said he doesn't want to move down far, and I'd hate to lose out on one of the top players anyway.  :turned:

Very doubtful we would be their trading partner. They would have to give up a considerable amount more to move up to 3, as opposed to 5 or 6 (when Evans is still likely to be there). I think raiders or Bucs would be their trading partners.

I make that deal in a heartbeat. This is one of the deepest drafts, and to pluck picks left and right from the top 3 rounds would be something magical for this team.

This, I would not want to move this far back in the first. We'd miss out on almost all "needed" options. I would not make this trade myself.

Rookies don't usually provide immediate relief, but you plug a bunch of high round guys in and let them get their feet wet for a season, and look out next year. This team would probably skyrocket.

While the Browns have a zillion regimes and coaches in the last decade,  this is the type of trade they made with Atlanta a few years ago that landed the Falcons WR Julio Jones.   The Browns also traded down around 12 spots in 2009,  enabling the Jets to draft Mark Sanchez with pick # 5.   With the Browns having pick # 4 this year,  will history repeat itself???

 

Being that the Raiders play 2nd fiddle to the 49ers in the S.F. Bay area,  it's hard to envision the Raiders making a trade with the 49ers of this magnitude.  If the trade backfires for the Raiders,  they will be half way to Los Angeles. 

 

If the Jaguars made a trade along these lines,  it wouldn't surprise me if Dave Caldwell would try to trade back up along the lines that the Ravens did in 2008 after they made the 1st Round trade with the Jaguars that landed Jacksonville pick # 8.    Once the draft reached a certain point in Round 1,  that's when Ozzie Newsome determined his target Joe Flacco was worth landing.    Hence,  the trade with the Texans to around pick # 18.

the #3 pick is worth 2,200 points.   The #30 pick is  worth 620 points.   So the 49ers would owe us 1,580 points.   They would have to fork over several years' worth of high draft picks to make that move.   Frankly, I don't see how they could do it.

Not sure how even this trade is, but having three second rounders this year would be nice.  Even if it's just so we can move back up to get a high QB.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke. 

If the 49ers offered the package that The Eleventh Doctor mentioned,  I think the Jaguars should make the trade.   It's difficult passing up a top 3 caliber player.  But this would be a tremendous opportunity for the Jaguars to take much more advantage of a deep draft and have tremendous 2015 draft flexibility.
