How good is Chad Henne?

Look at all the other teams in the league. As far as starters go, who is Henne better than?

None of them.

He's the 32nd best QB in the league or more bluntly, the worst starter at QB in the league.

EJ Manuel.

Ofc Manuel as room to grow, but as of last year.. dude was awful. Geno Smith as well.

Actually EJ Manuel had a higher passer rating than Henne and actually performed well at times in competitive games.

Geno Smith is probably the only guy in the league that is arguably a worse starter than Henne, but of course he's also a rookie. Henne has no excuse.

He's not good. His QB rating of 76 is about as pedestrian as you can get as a starter. A backup should have ratings in that arena.

I don't think anyone is saying he is great lol.. Just that he could have his best career year this year.

Depends on how you want to rank them.  If you go by avg yards per game he's better than quite a few guys who might surprise you.  Guys like Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, EJ Manuel, Gino Smith.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

If only the NFL kept track of meaningful yards and garbagetime yards.

Henne is a true master of garbage time stat padding.

Gotta be a lil grateful for Henne though. If it weren't for him we might still have Gabbert

Yeah, I've heard that said.  I've always felt like this is just a rationalization for someone who's taken a position and doesn't want to be distracted by something as annoying as statistics.  What the heck is garbage time anyway?  Does the defense stop playing then or something?  And why is Henne the only player that plays during it?

When a team is leading by a large margin they usually pull back on the rush and play a style of defense meant to allow yardage gains while not allowing anyone to get over the top for a quick score.

You can see a QBs situational stats on NFL.com if you look. Henne passed for about 1200 of his 3200 yards in the fourth quarter, when games were well out of reach. In the other quarters he passed for a consistent 650-700 yards.

However, if you really haven't been watching the games and seeing the phenomenon for yourself then I don't think there's any stat that would open your eyes at this point.

And again, he's basically David Garrard, who fewer had a problem with.

I agree that stats don't tell the whole story.  With that said, it's human nature that people tend to remember the bad more than the good.  That's why statistics and metrics are important and the whole "see with your own eyes" idea is unreliable..  That's why the idea of "garbage time stats" is such a myth.

David Garrard is far better than Henne. I'd take Garrard in a heartbeat over Henne.

The guy can't even get off the couch without having to drain his knee.

Sorry if the truth hurts.

Henne 2013

305/503, 3241, 13/14

Garrard 2009

314/516, 3597, 15/10

Henne deserves credit where it's due.  He finished the season stronger than he started it, which is something Garrard never did.

So agree.  Hey just because you think Henne is decent doesn't mean you think he's ultimately the answer.  But I agree with you, give credit where it's due.  If we could sign the guy as our backup for the next 5 years or more, I'd have no complaints.  It really gets under my skin to hear people describe him as garbage or the worst QB ever when he wasn't even the worst starter in the NFL last year.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Is Henne good? No, not really, but the list of available QBs aren't good either.

Of all the marginal options available, Henne is the one with the best chance of hitting the ground running because he has already spent a year in the system.

I don't see the point in going through the growing pains of familiarizing another marginal QB with the team when your ultimate goal is to have him playing as little as possible probably before the end of the season anyway.

There you go again using facts.

One thing. Garrard put those stats up in 16 starts. Henne had 13.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

This is the point most of us are trying to make. Henne is really just Mr. Right Now. He's not part of the long term plan. He's simply the best option for this team right now.
