Mike Mayock: I wouldn’t use a first-round pick on Teddy Bridgewater

Quote:A trained eye, with an honest and informed opinion. I agree. I think he is wrong, and his track record suggests that there is just as much or probably a greater chance that he is wrong, but he isn't paid to be right about prospects, he's paid to give his opinion. He also obviously has resources (coaches tape, attending pro days, etc) that we don't.
Watching the Teddy brigade try to provide damage control is amusing. I don't get how or why people get so emotionally attached to a prospect unless you are a fan of Louisville or whatever college team your mancrush plays for. Even then, if you are a Jaguars fan, why get your panties in a wad over whether we select your mancrush or not in the draft? You're supposed to be a Jaguars fan first, right? The moment that teal & black jersey goes on whoever we select whether that's Bridgewater or anyone else, I'll be cheering for them and against everyone who lines up against us.

And everyone else (including Teddy fans) will cheer for whoever we draft. So now having a conversation about a prospect is damage control/getting panties in a wad? It's the draft where people have differing opinions. That's what makes it fun and mayock has been off his game the past few years. It's clear he uses less film and more info from sources he has. I have no emotional attachment to Bridgewater. I want what is best for the Jaguars. I just find it funny that Mayock watches all this Bridgewater tape and has him as the number one pick. He has a bad pro day. Now he has him as a second rounder. Sorry if I don't take Mayock seriously.

Quote:It's funny that talking heads say pro days aren't important, but then when a prospect has a bad one their entire body of work is put into question.I think to be fair, he/they say they aren't important for the reason Mayock mentioned in the OP's quote. Because everybody does good at them. You're asking a quarterback whose about to be paid millions to throw a football, to throw a football with no pressure or defenses. It should be the definition of 'boring/unimportant'. It's like asking Lebron James to go do a few dunks at practice with nobody guarding him. It doesn't mean anything. Unless of course Lebron dinks, donks, and misses basically every dunk. Then you wonder if somethings wrong.
I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

Let me start off by saying I like Mayock. I think of all the analysts out there he is one of the best. And typically isnt afraid to stick his neck out. He'll knock highly thought of players and talk up prospects others arent quite as high on.
So I'm not one to call out Mayock. However I'm pretty sure I heard him say he hadnt really looked at Bridgewater before his pro day.... that whenever he spoke highly of Bridgewater that he was parroting others' views of Teddy. And that after Teddy's poor pro day, he finally was able to dive into the film and make his own conclusion. So to hear him say that he had seen 4 games worth of tape before the combine doesnt jive with what I've heard earlier. Sounds like his story is changing a little. Now that Mayock's star has risen, I just dont think he has as much time to study guys as he did before. So when voicing his opinion about certain players there may be a caveat now that he just hasnt seen as much of them as he would have liked. Plus I wonder if his opinion is starting to be more influenced by what scouts are telling him in an attempt to look more correct on draft day. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff.
My only real beef with Mayock is this. I don't mind him saying Teddy was not as good on tape as he remembered, I don't even mind him saying Teddy will fall to the second round. I could prolly go along with all of that, IF he also had Bottles, and Carr, and Garrap, and others falling to the second too.
Listen, I understand that Teddy might not be the QB that some thought he was, but he's still a hellava lot better than everybody else(excluding Johnny in my humble opinion). Here's the deal. If no QBs are taken in the first, and Teddy falls to the second(because of a bad pro day and re-examined tape), I'm okay with that. But if ANY team actually takes Bottles, Carr, Garrap, etc over Teddy because of his pro-day/tape, they are crazy. Even if Teddy is a 'second rounder'(which i don't believe for a second), he is still by far the #2 QB in this draft. By far! The #3 QB is lightyears behind him. If Bridge drops to second, all the #3, #4, #5, and #6 QBs like Bottles and Carr should too.

Quote:Plus I wonder if his opinion is starting to be more influenced by what scouts are telling him in an attempt to look more correct on draft day. I think that is the downside to all these guys. They try so hard to have their board mirror where players get picked instead of where they actually have them graded. It's hilarious to watch all the "draft experts" adjust their big board in near unison.

I understand maybe slight changes but not a whole round after "going back and watching".
The talking heads like Mayock don't have access to all of the information that a team has. I believe Polian was talking about this the other day on Sirius NFL radio. Guys like he and Kiper are information gatherers, not true talent evaluators. I have a feeling that their big boards are heavily influenced by the indications they get from their conversations with teams on where a player may go in the draft rather then them looking at tape of 300 players and ranking them. They look at tape too, but their opinions aren't solely based on that. I think Mayock making this declaration now is more about where he's discovered Bridgewater's value around the league really is. Rather than look really foolish come draft day where he has him rated number 1 for QBs and watches QB after QB get taken ahead of him, he opted to take the little bit of heat he's getting by making an about face on Bridgewater now. For the record, of the talking heads, I prefer Mayock's personality to that of Kiper or McShay or anyone else. At the very least, he seems like he knows what he's talking about more so than the others, whether that's true or not is certainly up for debate.
Quote:Plus I wonder if his opinion is starting to be more influenced by what scouts are telling him in an attempt to look more correct on draft day. I think that's what it's always been about. Maybe Mayock has gotten better info from teams over the years because he actually played in the league and guys respect him more than Kiper who I don't believe has ever been employed by an NFL team. Quote:Mayock already got the raking over the coals on twitter that he deserved for such a laughable take earlier today. Let's just say that the reputation of the formerly great Mike Mayock was already in a freefall over the last few years, and it might have crashed and burned this year. Yep Quote:Just an over analysis. Mayock loved gabbert and alualu. Yes he did. Quote:Lol so before the pro day he was a candidate for first overall according to Mayock...now he's not even a first rounder? I know......its shameful. Mayock's cred is dropping like a lead balloon. Had Mayock's opinion been similar pre and post pro day workout, then I'd have more respect for the opinion.
Quote:I know......its shameful. Mayock's cred is dropping like a lead balloon.Totally honest question, I'm curious more than anything. For those who say Mayock's cred is dropping or virtually gone now because this bridgewater situation. For you personally, will he get it back/redeem himself if Teddy does in fact drop to the second? Or are you saying that even if he's right 'in real life/come draft day', he's still wrong 'in theory'?

Still wrong in my opinion because I don't think he's using his evaluation. I want to hear what he thinks not what his sources think. Quote:...says the massively butthurt amateur...Oh please, feel free to go look back at my comments on Mayock long before they pertained to Teddy. It's been a steady and precipitous decline ever since he took the Thursday Night Football gig years ago. He doesn't even start looking at college film until mid/late February anymore, as quoted by himself. That's just not enough time to get a firm grasp on very much at all. He used to be one of the very best, no doubt about that...but nowadays there are many, many people who run circles around him if for no other reason than they put in literally 10x the work on the class. Clowney > Teddy.
Would you Teddy lovers still take Teddy over Clowney? You went 49 pages saying you would three months ago.... Quote:Yep Is it Mayock's cred - or yours? Of course you only have cred in your own mind - but as the guy leading the Tank for Teddy parade you are deathly afraid that Mayock might be on to something, aren't you?
