Get the QB or build the roster

Quote:This is not the QB year for a draft.  Dont get me wrong a lot of great hopefuls (potentials) but nothing that solid that you can say this guy is going to be a great QB.  I mean from what Ive seen I would be happiest with Johnny Football but i have enough questions in my head (as a nobody) that i wouldnt draft him at 3 overall, nor could you guarantee he'll be there if you trade down.

I am confident in Clowney or Mack if Clowney is taken to be a good /great starter and either player upgrades your team the moment you take him without any doubt from almost anyone you ask.  Thats the kind of security (safe pick) you want at #3.  I wouldnt be shocked if Robinson or Matthews was drafted as a great OT is always safe in the top 5.
I agree with this assessment. I won't be against taking a QB in the later round, like Seattle and Philadelphia did.

Need a QB to grow with your team.  We need a "gunslinger" QB.

Quote:I've been pondering this as well. I'll probably get ripped for this opinion but Chad Henne isn't that bad of a quarterback. He was noticeably better than Gabbert last year.

I'm not completely sold that any of these qb's are sure things. I'd build the parts around Henne and get a qb to develop in the later rounds.

Really, the choice comes down to Mack or Watkins at 3. I'd be really tempted to trade back a few spots if I could get an extra 2nd and 4th rd pick. This is a deep draft, I'd like to see them plug several holes if possible.

They need to add o-line and receivers early and bpa on defense.

Thoughts?

Henne isn't a bad QB. His problem is consistency. He allows himself to get rattled from one bad play and then starts spiralling downward, all in the space of half a quarter. I think if we had Watkins as a weapon for him we would see less of the bad Henne.

Would you be upset if Dave Caldwell drafted say Clowney or Mack at #3, and then traded up to draft Johnny Jaguar?  I am always against trading away next years 1st or even 2nd round to go up slightly in a draft but lets face it the Jaguars have a horrible track record of 1st round picks!  I know most of that was Gene Smith / Shack Harris's fault, but with so much talent in this years draft would it be worth it to trade away next years 1st and/or 2nd round or even a player like Lewis to gain another 1st or 2nd round pick in this years draft?

Trade away next years 1st or 2nd round pick to get Manziel?  No.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

In the space of one quarter?  We've seen that in the space of one series.

In my defense I did say half a quarter, but you’re right, he can collapse quickly. However, with Blackmon suspended and MoJo sputtering, our little dink and dunk plays could make a series last half a quarter.

Good point, but as bad as things could be at times, 3 and outs rarely burned more than 30 seconds of clock.

Like i said before Im not super confident in this years draft class, but anything has to be better than watching Henne again for the entire year or next.

I disagree.  Regardless of what they do in the draft, it's a strong probability you're watching Henne for the majority of the 2014 season.  I don't want to see the front office giving up future first or second day picks on a huge question mark in a guy like Manziel.  That would be one of the dumbest moves ever made by a front office here in Jacksonville.  Fortunately, we know Caldwell covets his draft picks, and he's not giving up a 1st or 2nd next year for anyone in this draft.

Wait for the next Luck. He should be here in year 20 when we win 6 games.

Interesting that you're the lone person on the board suggesting this...

"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."

Or, we can do what most here have suggested, and draft a QB until you find the right one.  Just don't reach.

FWIW...

Mark Long was on the Dempsey show this morning saying he believes this regime has a build the team first and add the QB later philosophy.

Makes sense given the Seattle Championship formula.

It does, but don't expect some around here to embrace the philosophy.

I'm an advocate of taking a QB in round 2 or 3 then taking another one in rounds 5-7.  I think that this class may not have any day one starter QB's, but it's laden with several QB's who have great potential for development.

If they were to take a QB in round 1, I'd be hoping for Manziel. Of course I'd prefer either Mack/Watkins/Trade Down over Manziel.

My vote is to do both. A qb is one pick in the draft. You can still rebuild with the other picks.

I'm not sure why some are acting like the two a mutually exclusive. If a qb you like is there then you take that qb.

That is very well likely but what if during preseason a 3rd to 7th round qb draft pick beats out Henne for the starting role?

Look at Seattle with Wilson they paid Flynn big money to be the starter and he lost the job to Russell Wilson whom in his 2nd year took the team to the SB victory.

It's not saying not to do both.  It's saying don't reach for need, or artificially let need of a QB steer you from making good decisions.  No sacrifice of team for QB, especially with this less than ideal crop.

You're only looking at one side of it. It may be a good decision to draft one.
