Maybe I shouldn't type that too much. "Someone" may go off the deep end.

Did anyone else hear the rant on 1010XL a few minutes ago?

Apparently, if the rumors are correct, Winston is a regular shopper at this particular Publix.  He has friends who work there.  His normal routine is to show up just before closing time where he regularly buys a few items, then walks out with a few "extras" as his friends look the other way.  It's not just crab legs.  The meat counter apparently is a free buffet for the Heisman trophy winner.

I asked.  He denied.  Plus, he works in the wrong department.

Surely he must at least know who the culprits are.  You know his co-workers would brag about it.

I've been at that store for ten months now and haven't heard anything about someone giving him extras right before close. I would have heard something by now if it were true because Publix people talk.

Ya I think if this were true, people in the store would hear about it.

This rumor sounds to me like an attempt pass the blame to the Publix employees.

This, if true, is a poor showing of character for all of those involved. Also against the law for all of those involved.

I'd be willing to bet that most athletes who get into trouble later on down the line, start off with something similar to this, doing something wrong and having other people/friends see it and just look the other way.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

Having worked at Publix in HS and college, I can attest to the fact that there are employees who do indeed turn a blind eye, especially with their friends.  It usually becomes common knowledge, and the people who are involved normally get caught.  It doesn't take much.  A few missed items when scanning, or ignoring the fact that their friend has put on 20 lbs between entering and leaving the store.  Unfortunately, they wind up getting busted because Publix people love to talk.

This.

During my time there if we "wrote off" perishable items that we wanted before they were being donated we had to get 3 signatures. One from the Dept Manager, Closing Manager, and Witness.

Publix Corporate kept a detailed inventory list, if there was more than a 3% inventory variance, it would trigger a red flag and prompt a immediate investigation through HR, LP, etc.

By that time people are gossiping, and word would have already spread back to the Managers as to who the culprits are.
Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

Didn't Winston claim he simply "forgot" to pay for his crablegs, crawfish, and butter?

It appears that wasn't the case. The report, and video shows he sees the cop in the store, stops, and maneuvers himself to walk behind him (thinking he didn't he was there I guess?).

That's not how it was portrayed in the letter his lawyer drafted.

Apparently "youthful ignorance" doesn't come into play when avoiding the police...

No, only willful ignorance.

He stole the crab legs. I think it is a little naive to think he "forgot" (or homerism).

I saw a cashier ring up her boyfriends one time. They all were obviously high school children. The two boys had three suitcases of beer under the the basket part of the cart. In the basket they had bags of chips and other snacks. She nervously looked around for a minute as her boyfriends placed the snack food on the turntable.

She rang the snacks up, but never scanned the beer and never carded them. After they pushed away from check out and headed outside, a third high school age boy came off an aisle to the check out area along with a front end manager. The cashier's other boyfriend even went through her line. He paid for the item and the two talked about what time the party started. He then left.

As soon as my cashier was finished ringing up my stuff and I paid, I headed out the door. Across the parking lot, I could see all three boys together in what had to be the car of a parent.

I called the store out of the phonebook when I got home and put away the frozen food items and meat.

The manager seemed obnoxious and kind of spoke back in a cocky, good old boy flippant manner. He made me feel ugly for reporting what I saw to him.

A few weeks later, his picture was gone, but I was hit with irony to learn, as it turned out, the cashier and all three of her boyfriends actually worked in the store. An older cashier rang up my order and told me they were all spoiled rich kids from a private school. She said their parents leave for weekend vacations all the time. They have beach-front houses to themselves so they steal beer from their grocery store and have parties.

I asked if the manager was fired for this. She said no. He was transfered to another store because he was hiring cute little high school girls and messing around with them.

BTW, the older cashier said one time one of the rich young turks wheeled an entire stock cart out of the store stacked full with assorted cases of beer and ice bags on top. Laughing  Laughing
