Quote:I get that Matthews ripple effect thing but does Matthews over Paztor at RT present a bigger upgrade then say a Mack to the Leo or Watkins to the WR corp? Very good question. I thought Pasztor did a fine job at RT and there is an argument to be made that RT is not a need...or at minimum a much lesser need than OLB/LEO. My fear with Pasztor is that him moving to tackle last year was new, and that now that opposing defenses have film on him, he may not be as effective this year. Certainly there is an argument to be made for a catalyst on defense...a Clowney or a Mack...or a Watkins. There are arguments in favor of all of the above choices in addition to Matthews. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
I'm sort of like you, I like most of these guys, but what I would like most is a trade down. Still remaining in the top ten though, so perhaps able to snag one of them in the 5-10 range.
Quote:This from the latest MMQB column... Bulleye, I find these reports funny, simply because there's absolutely no incentive for the Jaguars to leak credible information/draft strategies to any outlet on player or players they're seriously targeting in the draft, especially at the top of the draft where most teams picking the top 5 have similar needs. It simply isn't a competent business model to leak credible information, allowing a competitor or competitors to use that information to their advantage. I've learned to ignore these pre-draft reports, usually the teams do the opposite of what these predraft reports indicate. We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote: Vastly superior. Quote:I'd be really disappointing if we went OT 2 years in a row with a top 3 pick. Getting one of the best players at his position in college - and one that translates to the same in the pro's is never disappointing to me. Matthews is that. Quote:The team needs both really, but Sammy Watkins is more of a need and would be an exciting pick. ....and WR is deep this year in this draft, and you'll be able to find a similarly productive WR as to what Watkins will be in the pro's in the 2nd, or 3rd rounds. No reason to select that at 3. He's not Calvin or AJ Green. Quote:Matthews would be a better RT than Paztor, and Paztor would be a better RG than whomever we have there now, which is nobody. So Matthews improves two positions with one pick. Yep. Quote:The team certainly felt like they had found their starter at RT in Pasztor. Taking a tackle at 3 this year would be a tremendous letdown after all the hype around the third pick. If they're going to go that route, trade out of the pick and get more value. Trading down and collecting more picks is still my #1 hope.
Quote:Smokescreen? Two weeks ago the Jaguars "really wanted a passrusher", they've been linked to Khalil Mack, Clowney, Bridgewater, Bortles, and just about every other prospect expected to go in the top half of the draft. The truth is, no one knows what they're going to do.
Matthews does not excite me, but our OL is suspect and we need to address it especially if Texans have Watt and Clowney

The truth is, no one knows what they're going to do. The only people who actually know what's going to happen are the guys in the war room. I'm sure Caldwell has dozens of scenarios to work with. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:Bulleye,Of course there's no incentive to disclose draft strategy ahead of the draft. Just responding to the thoughts if they were a true reflection of the Jaguars' thinking. It's not totally inconceivable Watkins or Matthews could be the choices. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote:The only people who actually know what's going to happen are the guys in the war room. I'm sure Caldwell has dozens of scenarios to work with. Exactly, David Caldwell isn’t going to provide a credible incentive for a team like the Browns, Raiders, Falcons etc.. (all of which have similar needs) to leap frog them and take a player the Jaguars truly covet, especially considering the two teams drafting ahead of the Jags clearly want to trade out of their respective spots

Quote:Of course there's no incentive to disclose draft strategy ahead of the draft. I don't see a scenario where the Jaguars draft a RT (especially at 3) in the first round, the pick wouldn't make sense from a value and personnel standpoint. Sammy Watkins is an option, I just don't see him as a transcendent talent head and shoulders above every other receiver prospect in this draft, if teams view him as such, he'll be gone by 3 anyway. In my humble opinion, the Jaguars will certainly draft Jadeveon Clowney if he inexplicably falls to us at 3, if not, they'll try like hell to trade out of the 3 spot. I think the depth of the WR class would preclude Watkins from being the pick, unless somehow they trade back to 5-6 and somehow Watkins is still there. As I expressed earlier in the thread, there are arguments against Matthews (or any other RT) being the pick at 3 for the Jaguars. Whatever the Jaguars decide to do, I hope they absolutely get a HOF caliber player with the pick. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote: Thats the most important thing. Thats also the level of player I envision Matthews being at ORT in the NFL. Why thats apparently an issue for some, in terms of us drafting him, who knows?...
When it all boils down I would be happy with Matthews/Watkins or Martin (trade down)....basically hope that Blackmon can stay out of trouble and take one of the QBs in the 1st next year.
I understand the whole don't rush a QB thing but if the below happens thats a pretty nice situation for a rookie QB to walk into...you got an OL that on paper looks dominant and weapons for him. LT- Joekel LG- Beadles C - ???//Maybe Richburg/Martin RG - Paztor RT - Matthews WR - Blackmon,Shorts,Ace Quote:I get that Matthews ripple effect thing but does Matthews over Paztor at RT present a bigger upgrade then say a Mack to the Leo or Watkins to the WR corp? This right here, just dont see the point of picking a RT so high when we have a solid RT, last year we had a terrible Rt and a LT in the final year of his deal, we had to go T. Passing on Watkins and Mack for a RT just makes no sense, we need play makers on offense and defense, we can get OL men later in the draft, the top explosive players just not gonna be there, WRs are gonna go fast int he 1st and 2nd round.

I'd love a first round playmaker, maybe that's just me but we don't have one on the team and it's a shame.
Look at the last few years - Alualu - Average at best Gabbert - No longer on the team Blackmon - Suspended until whenever Joeckel - O-Line I'd love Blackmon to come back and tear it up but that's something we can't count on, the guy is as talented as they come and if he stayed clean he could be a top 10 WR in this league easily. Who is left of Watkins/Mack/Clowney when it comes down to it would be my pick. I wouldn't be upset at a QB (Manziel/Bridgewater/Bortles/Carr) although I think any of them would be a reach but another lineman, especially one who would be playing RT when we have a perfectly fine RT, would be a difficult one to take. Quote:I'd love a first round playmaker, maybe that's just me but we don't have one on the team and it's a shame. That is the most persuasive argument against Matthews (or any RT) at 3. This team desperately needs playmakers/game changers/guys that can change field position/momentum. We don't have that. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
