Actually no. Philiosophy is still similar. Barr is closer to the prototypical 4-3 DE with his build/ speed. If we drafted him, thats exactly the position he'd play. Hence, premium position.

I have similar concerns about Shorts against big, physical corners.

 

Once they get into their routes, both are fine.

 

Just getting them into their routes against certain players/schemes is my concern.

 

Now a guy with Watkins' tools and coaching from Sullivan, he should be fine.

 

But right now that's the one concern I have re: Watkins.

 

I agree with Shorts, but you don't have to stick with the same formation on every play; you can switch it up from time to time and rotate Mike Brown in as well. In addition, Watkins has the kind of speed that means if you are jamming him then you had better have a Safety over the top of him. While it may take some time / production for teams to develop this kind of respect for him, I feel confident that it will happen.

It's not about opinions here is the problem. If you don't think Watkins/Mack are good at 3 it's fine. The problem is, your reasoning for not liking the players is dumb. You sit here all day and say Watkins doesn't play the same as Megatron/Green, so he isn't worth it. Yet you want a QB who has a very slim frame and isn't prototypical at all either. Than you talk about premium positions, and bring up a RT. Even if the game has changed, a RT at #3 is not smart. If your plans are to eventually bring that player to LT, maybe you do, but we just drafted Joeckel and he figures to be the LT in JAX for the next 10-12+ years.

On a side note, Lageman was on 1010XL this morning and envisioned what the Jaguars offense could be like with Watkins, Shorts, and Blackmon as receivers.  He compared them to the 1990s Buffalo Bills.  He indicated Watkins would be Lofton, the speed guy outside.  He compared Shorts to Beebe.  But Lageman compared Blackmon to Andre Reed.  Aside from the neat only to me idea that I, too made the comparison between Blackmon and Andre Reed and that he would benefit from a speed guy outside him, I love the idea of that WR trio with even a competent QB throwing to them.

 

Bottom line: there would be worse things than the Jaguars drafting Watkins, even if my preference at 3 is for another position.

Any top 10 prospect in this draft would do beyond wonders for this team for the long haul. That is about the dumbest line I have ever seen.

I think most people here want Clowney (who is one of your four). They just don't expect him to be there at 3.


 

I personally want either Clowney or Manziel. But if Clowney is gone and Caldwell does not think Manziel is a franchise QB, then Watkins is probably the next best choice if they can't trade down. I don't want the Jags to use the #3 pick on a DPR like Mack.


 

Nor do I want them to pick another LT, play him at RT for half a season, and then trade the previous LT for two late picks. I'm shocked that you would even consider that an acceptable option.


 

Last year I posted a comparison of Caldwell's first year as GM and how similar it was to Gene Smith's first year. Based on that, I expect Gene Smith 2.0 to take Aaron Donald, at which point I'll probably need a new TV after throwing something heavy at the screen.

How long have you, myself, and many many others lamented about the dearth of speed on the roster? Here is a guy that is velocity in a helmet. That gets over the top of Defenses when they know that he is the #1 option in the passing offense. That takes swing passes and generates 10 yard gains on them just because the Defense is backed off because they are terrified of what he can do.

 

Watkins was tailor made for the 'site read syncronized' offense in that he can see if he should back off for a swing pass, or push deep into the Secondary based on coverage. I get that there are other talented players around but this is the type of player that has been needed on this roster for a long time.
