I don't see it that way Tim, I simply don't believe that you or many others think this was a good pick. If you say so I will call you a liar. I am a Jags fan through and through but this pick sucks. I will gladly eat crow if proven wrong .

Bortles was consistently touted as one of the top QBs in this draft. He's a Jaguar. I think it has the potential to be a great pick. Unlike you, I'm smart enough to know that only time will tell if he's a guy who becomes a franchise QB or not.

What happened is that Caldwell chose to take Bortles at 3, and did not trade down.


 

There could be several reasons that Caldwell did not trade down:


 

1. He did not want to risk losing Bortles for just an extra 1st next year.

2. He tried but did not succeed in trading down.


3. He would have made the trade but Buffalo didn't try because they expected the Jags to want a lot more.


 

If it were cases 2 or 3, then I'd say Caldwell is not a very good GM if he can't engineer a trade that the Cleveland GM made.


 

Case 1 reminds me of the Alualu pick. Our GM falls in love with a player who was expected to go later, and fears trading down. Yes, yes, Miami was going to take Alualu, Cleveland was going to take Bortles.


 

If he makes the trade, the worst case is we get (say) Barr, plus an extra 2015 1st round pick. Considering it's Buffalo it will probably be a high pick. Best case is that Bortles is still there at 9. Maybe Bortles is that good, and Caldwell made a great move. I hope so. But I saw the Fiesta Bowl and was not impressed.

Sure, opinions absolutely can be wrong.  Especially when dealing with things outside of what opinions usually deal with -- preferences.

I sound like a moron? I'm glad you take some talking heads grade as a vote of confidence in this pick. Me? I watched this guys college career and it wasn't that impressive. Name a single circumstance where you watched friggin Blake Bortles and said damn I hope he is a Jag some day.

I was one that felt in the start of this process, that Bortles was Blaine 2.0. This pick is really starting to grow on me, ALOT. Everyone wanted us to get Tebow, because he was a hometown kid, and people were willing to make billboards or boycott the games. Well guess what, we just drafted a kid that is almost hometown for JAX, and Dave just created our version of a middle finger for the "Tebow Fans". It's a middle finger feeling, because he's a Florida kid who CAN play quarterback. His accuracy was top notch within the draft, he only has to worry about arm strength (Just lift weights). The only reason why I couldn't trust him, is beacuse he never threw for more than 30 TD's in a season. That is a hidden rule for me, and I know that rule can be respected for others.

 

The reason why it is growing on me, is beacuse he has a great arm, and you do not have to worry about the fragile factor, like you do for Johnny or Teddy. If he sits, or at least sits for the majority of this season, then Bill Polian trained David Caldwell very well. Don't jump the gun, we need more weapons for Bortles, and this is the draft to do it!

Bortles was linked to the 1st overall pick in some mock drafts.  If he turns out to be a good player I sense a ton of crow eating here.  Some of the fans on this board should be use to eating crow because they do it so often.

Bortles was pegged as the first pick in quite a few mock drafts over the last several months. That tells me he wasn't really as much of a reach as you think. 

 

All of the QBs were all over the place in the mocks. I'm making no judgement on the Bortles pick, except that I didn't see him as being so good that he was worth the BAP at 9 plus a 2015 1st. My assumption is that he was the BAP on Caldwell's board when he was picked. I did see him in one game, a very important game, and he was nothing special. Maybe he usually plays a lot better than that.


 

Mayock is probably the gold standard of draft pundits. He had him going at 11, and as the 2nd best QB. I personally thought Houston would trade down and take him at 6.


 

Who knows where Bortles would have gone had the Jags not taken him? Maybe 4 to Cleveland, maybe 26 to Cleveland, maybe 8 to Minnesota. Our GM was not willing to take the risk that he would not be there at 9, not even for a 2015 1st round pick (and yes, any competent GM could have made that trade with Buffalo).


 

View it however you want. I am disappointed when our GM falls in love with a player and misses a chance to pick up an extra prime pick because he's afraid to risk losing his man crush, whether it's Alualu, Bortles, or Reggie Williams.

Caldwell took a big position in rating Bortles that highly. I hope he's right.


 

Houston needed a QB even more than Jax; they have a fairly solid roster except at QB. Yet Houston took Clowney, so at least one [professional, NFL] GM [with a pretty good track record] disagreed with Caldwell's opinion.

BTW, very few draft picks are given a grade lower than B-. Grade inflation is rampant in the NFL.

Of those teams, the Chiefs used a Draft pick to acquire their Quarterback.

 

One of those teams didn't get a long-term starter.

 

The other two were free agency -- so I'm guessing you're a big Mike Vick fan or something?  Oh yeah, and one of them isn't a long-term solution either.
