Agreed. I think in the next CBA there is going to be some serious renegotiating in regards to league punishment as they are cheating people out of millions and ruining careers for something that is likely going to be fully recreationaly legal within the next 10 years. Criminal.

In a previous Blackmon thread, a poster stated that Justin needed "tough love" and indeed he needs to realize the severity of this situation.

Well I do not know how much tougher you can get than:

Suspending Justin past week 8 would also be extremely unfair from an objective standpoint. This was his 3rd strike so he was to receive a year suspension based on precedent and the league wants to rob him now of an additional half a season?

The missing piece is that Blackmon has to apply for reinstatement, and part of that is showing commitment to fixing the problem. Seems like Caldwell either doesn't think that Blackmon's in any hurry to apply, or he isn't all that confident of his commitment to get clean and stay that way.

 

If you think Gene Smith got fired because of the Blackmon pick... well you really are clueless.   Blackmon was the best pick he made as GM.

I cannot fathom a scenario where the NFL would force a team to retain a player that is suspended. What if your Long Snapper is suspended? The NFL going to make you burn two roster spots on that position alone? What if the replacement LS gets suspended too?


It would make no sense for the NFL to force a team to keep a player that potentially offers them nothing in return.


As for weed- I have absolutely no problem with people smoking weed. Unless their job stipulates that they cannot. And if a player's multi-million dollar livelihood rests on them not smoking weed, and they do it anyways...they have bigger problems.

Once the suspension ends, the team typically has a short roster exemption period to decide whether they want to activate the player, place him on a different reserve list or release/trade him.

I'm not a fan of random NFL testing at all. In my ever-so-humble opinion, the only regular and/or random drug testing NFL players should face is for PEDs. Recreational drug testing should be limited to "for-cause" testing only, with test results sealed until one of the NFL's arbitrators (Cottrell and Birk, right?) have had a chance to review the case and determine the merits of the test.

 

The problem is just magnified by Jim Irsay showing back up so quickly after being slapped with felony drug charges, and seemingly no one in the major media takes issue with that.

I do however have to point out your hypocrisy, you say that you have no problem with players smoking pot, but that they need to follow the rules. BOOM. You just conceited the argument right there, the rule needs to be changed, it is NOT Blackmon's fault. Yes, it is the leagues fault that their punishments are draconian and out of touch and yes it is a problem that needs to be addressed. You make excuses for murders and rapists. the players know when the tests happen, if they can't stop, then they obviously have a problem ... doesn't matter what people think about it, it is the rule and it won't change as long as it is illegal
