To all in this thread... what has Michael Sam done other than publicly state he was gay?

 

Take a minute to step back and ignore what the media has done.  What specifically has Michael Sam done other than state I'm a gay athlete who was SEC defensive player of the year?

 

How a lot of this reads is: He should have stayed in the closet because now he's set himself up for success just because he is gay?

 

Why should I ignore what the media has done? The media is a big part of the issue of this. As another said, it may not be Sam's fault about the media exploitation but he could have ended/ controlled it. He simply enabled it. He knew what he was doing. Its all calculated/ contrived.

Michael Sam initially declined requests to have cameras present in his living room.  I'm betting ESPN had some way of changing his mind. They weren't going to take no for an answer.

...Come to think of it, he'd be better than Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith.  So that would have worked out for everyone.  The Mullet ruins everything.

All the hype has to do with something else altogether.


If he wants to just be a football player, he would end the circus because while it may further his name in media affairs, it won't do a thing but be a detriment to him as a football player.

Because if there's one thing we've learned from TMZ, it's that the best way to end media scrutiny is to politely ask the cameramen to leave you alone.

The Dolphins are looking at in in the light that they just got over the Incognito scam and the last thing they need is to be the poster child for more intolerance.  

 

It makes sense from an organizational and business standpoint. If anyone in any job were to say that they'd have to undergo the same training.  They probably wouldn't get a fine, but an EO report would be filed against them for sure.

To me, him kissing his boyfriend on national tv was a statement. For a 7th rounder, he sure is getting a lot of attention. He already got a contract with Visa. Imagine people like Tiquan Underwood, Storm Johnson, and Rashad Jennings getting a contract with Visa and selling the second most jerseys after the draft. Not the same is it? I'm all for gay marriage, i have quite a few lesbian friends, but like religion you shouldn't go around and throwing it in peoples faces.

In keeping with the spirit of this thread, again being an SEC Defensive POY speaks volumes especially playing in the best conference in CFA.

 

Im looking at Sam from a football prospect and seeing what contributions he can bring to the Rams, yet to the league. 

 

Im not interested (for the sake of this thread) in his private life. I disagree with the lifestyle and that's all that needs to be said. 

 

For a player who had 6 sacks in 2012, jump to 13 in 2013 shows me he has potential, and that is what the focus should be on.

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

The NFL is pretty shrewd with their marketing tactics.  You're right, it's all custom jerseys, but they put them out there for the fans almost immediately after they're drafted to take advantage of the emotion of the moment.

I don't know how a man who was SEC Defensive Player of the Year cannot make a roster. He was the best player on defense in the best conference in the country, how can he not make a contribution on the field in some capacity?

What is sad is that society, or parts of it, have deemed that if you disagree with someone's lifestyle (or anything for that matter I suppose) you hate them (or it). Couldn't be more false.

What's really sad is that society, or parts of it, feel like they are entitled to know the specifics of someone's lifestyle.  

 

I'm sorry, but I continue to feel Sam played the sexual preference card in order to give himself more exposure leading up to the draft in hopes it might improve his stock.  THAT became the story. 

 

He ended up winning the SEC defensive player of the year.  He showed nice improvement in sack production, but the scouting reports on him never changed.  He was still considered at best a late round prospect because he didn't fall into any definable category. 

 

Is it possible playing his card helped nudge the SEC to select him as the defensive player of the year?  He wasn't even the best linebacker in the SEC. 

 

I think the guy is brilliant.  He needed something to elevate his stature, and he knew the paralysis caused by political correctness, and how the media in America loves stories like this.  They carried the torch for him, and when the draft arrived, ESPN and NFLN both made it their mission to assure he got drafted. 

 

In the end, his sexuality is irrelevant.  What matters is what he can do on the field.  He isn't the first gay player to play in the league.  He's just the first one to admit it.  It would completely diminish his "accomplishment" if a current player decided to come out of the closet, especially if that player happened to be a recognizable one. 

 

I really don't care what the guy does in his bedroom.  It's none of my business.  But, it does bother me if he's used his private life to gain an advantage in the draft.  The whole thing just seemed so odd that he decided to come out in such a public manner.  I really think that was a tactic and not some cathartic moment for him

I think he actually hurt his draft stock by coming out, but team mates said he played better because he got the weight off his shoulders.

If his teammates knew already, isn't that all that really mattered?  The guy came out on national TV.  That wasn't an attempt to lift the burden.  That was an attempt to get the spotlight. 

 

In the end, his strategy didn't help his draft stock much.  But not for a lack of trying.  I think his coming out was a very calculated move that just didn't pan out as he'd hoped it would.

Yep.  You are 100% correct.  Reality really hit home when he kissed his boyfriend after being drafted.  I think that freaked a lot of people out.  That said, THE MEDIA is 100% guilty of pushing it down everybody's throat as they lead off NFL Total Access with the story, it's on CNN, etc.  THE MEDIA claims to seek equal rights but they in fact fuel the fire to heighten controversy.

 

I agree with your statement 100%.  Michael Sam announced he was gay.  Nothing more and nothing less.  Now it's time to go play some football.
