Blake Bortles

Quote:I see where Caldwell indicated that Atlanta offerred the Jaguars a 3rd round pick to switch places in the first round. What do you think the chances would have been that Bortles would have still been there at pick 6? I totally understand that Bortles was the Jags guy and didn't want to risk losing him to Cleveland, Oakland or a team that loved him enough to trade up to pick 4 or 5. However, how nice would it have been if the Jags made this trade, still got Bortles and was able to also draft Marcus Martin with the pick from Atlanta?

I say the odds of losing out on Bortles was extremely low. Buffalo would have traded up to take Watkins and Oakland would not have taken Bortles, although I don't know who they would have taken since Mack would have been selected by Atlanta. Imagine adding the draft's best center to the haul the Jaguars still got. They would have earned an A++ grade rather than the A most experts gave them. I guess I'm just greedy, but I would have rolled the dice on that one and if I lost I would have "settled" for Manziel or Evans and traded back up for Teddy if Evans was the pick.

I think Bortles would have gone to Cleveland at 4 actually.

If for some crazy chance that they didn't draft him, the very next pick (Oakland) would have drafted Bortles.  All those teams needed QBs.

We did the right thing staying put.

This falls under the category of Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda but Caldwell didn't... He targeted his man and he definately didn't want to compromise Not attaining him...

Good Call Caldwell..

The bake jokes have been stale for the last 3 days.

This is exactly it.  And our bunch played it right too, we could have been jumped.  Extraordinary performance by Caldwell particularly.

Quote:Bortles was at his very best in his biggest games. Just look at the Louisville game and the Baylor game. He was money.

One of the greatest ironies I've seen on this MB over the last 11 + years is that when Central Florida played Louisville last season,  the focus in the game thread in the College Football section was for the most part on Teddy Bridgewater.    For many who participated in that thread,  not all by any means,   Blake Bortles was an afterthought.    As we saw,  so much changed in several months.    The Jaguars fans that wanted the team to win as much as possible last season ended up seeing substantial tangible improvement AND the team getting their top choice at the QB position.

D6, remember at the time Bridgewater was expected to be picked first the whole season. Nobody said he might slip out of the top 10 so we were talking about hoping Teddy falls to us.

Was anyone not surprised we picked Bortles?

At the very least,  the projection was Teddy Bridgewater being a top 3 QB during the season.  While back then I thought Jadeveon Clowney was at least co-favorite to be the # 1 selection with Bridgewater,  it certainly wouldn't have surprised me back then if Bridgewater was # 1.

I had Blake Bortles going to the Browns with pick # 4 in my mock draft that I posted on the MB a day or two before the start of the draft.   Having said that,  I didn't expect the Jaguars to take him at # 3.   With Clowney being taken already,   I thought the Jaguars would take Khalil Mack if they stayed at pick # 3.   With Sammy Watkins the other realistic possibility.

Dave Caldwell and co. did a tremendous job in keeping their interest in Blake Bortles a secret.  In this day and age with so many media outlets covering the NFL and the social media explosion,   what Caldwell pulled off was much easier said than done.

I don't read a lot of mocks, but  one I did see had the Vikings picking Bortles at #8. The Johnny Football hype got to me and I expected Manziel to get off the board first.

It would have been very tempting for the Vikings to take Blake Bortles with pick # 8.  They are fortunate that Teddy Bridgewater dropped to the point that all they had to do to trade up to draft him was give up a 4th Round pick.

My expectation was for Johnny Manziel to drop to pick # 16,  unless there was a trade.  With Jerry Jones then taking him.   I didn't think Jones would resist taking Manziel,  knowing how much Jones likes limelight players.   That much more with the state of Texas connection and Tony Romo's back situation.  In this case,  Jones used good judgment.

For moving up 9 spots, you have to be pretty lucky to only give up a fourth round pick.

That is exactly what Mike Mayock was expecting in his final mock. After the draft, Jones said Manziel was #1 on his board because the Steelers picked OLB Ryan Shazier one pick earlier and they did talk about it before deciding to select somebody I had never heard of (Zack Martin).

Back to our pick, I would have been mad if we had accepted Atlanta's offer because the other guys people mocked us to get - Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack - were the two players picked right after Bortles. We would have been forced to pick the wrong guy if we had traded down.

At the part of the draft the trade was made between Minnesota and Seattle,   I was expecting the Vikings to have to give up the eqivalent of a 3rd Round pick.   There's no question the Vikings are fortunate the Seahawks were willing to make the trade.   The Seahawks traded down again,  going from pick # 40 to pick # 45,  hence they likely believed either no player stood out on their draft board and/  or they felt they could maximize their situation better by having more picks.

While I'm not surprised Zack Martin went in the part of the draft that Dallas took him,   I was surprised they were the team that drafted him.    If the Cowboys were going to pass on Manziel,   it sure felt like they would address one of their many needs on Defense.    Especially since their were a couple of viable options at Safety with pick # 16.    Martin is the anthithesis of the type of player Jerry Jones usually seeks in the higher parts of the draft.   Martin isn't flashy but he's effective.    His versatility is a huge plus.

Trading down to pick # 6 was very risky for the Jaguars,  based on their desire to land Blake Bortles.   There was a good chance that the combination of Khalil Mack,  Blake Bortles,  and Sammy Watkins would have gone in the pick # 3 to pick # 5 range if the Jaguars traded down to pick # 6.    If this would have happened,  the Jaguars probably would have tried to trade down again.

Am I the only one who finds Blake to be dumb? I mean maybe i'm reading into his interviews and such too much but he doesn't seem quick witted like most QBs do.

You don't have to be a homer to be excited about the pick. He has work to do just like any rookie but other than that, what's not to like?
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Yes you are the only one Swaguars that finds him "dumb".  He is thoughtful in his responses, that's it.  He isn't going to just spout off nonsense like you just so he can hear himself speak.  Dumb is not wearing gloves to a pro day when you have worn them every other game, not throwing at the combine when one of your "opponents" is and used that to pass you up or going to a fraternity party at your current teams hated rival....those are the QB's that aren't Blake. He went from relative obscurity to being one of the main focuses of the entire NFL draft process (including being on a weekly TV show leading up to the draft) in less than a year.....yup now that you mention it Swaguars, dude must be an idiot.....ffs

Wisdom has two parts.

1.  Having a lot to say.

2.  Not saying it.
