QB Competition: Blowing Smoke

response in red

Quote:I can see three-five  UDFAs making the team.

I think Cobb will have a tough time though, as will Reynolds, due to the players there.

I think there is realistically one RB spot available.  Robinson makes the team, but I see Todman getting cut.  Right now, I'm thinking Storm Johnson makes the squad.

If Todman doesn't make the roster, Cobb is probably a lock at that point. Cobb, Johnson, Gerhart, Robinson would all make it at that point. Robinson is more of a WR/ RB/ AP-weapon than just a "RB".

Reynolds will have to beat out Blackmon and/or Ball to make the team.

I don't see that being that tough. Reynolds is likely the better player than both. He should be able to edge out at least one of them.

I can also see the DT out of Cal possibly making it.

Yeah, he's also highly thought of....lol, I might have to add one to my list. Who's spot would he take though?

I like Copeland, but all of the WRs outside of the top 4 (Lee Shorts, Robinson and Sanders) are competing for one, two spots tops.

I tend to agree, except....well, I see 5 WR making the roster. I don't see Shorts as a "lock" if multiple WR show something in camp/ PS. Doss has potential. He's only 24. I don't think he was brought here with the intent of ST's only. I think they really see some WR potential there. Doss had a 100 yard game in his spot start last season.

I like this draft class-including the UDFAs-but I don't know yet if Jacksonville has all of those future Pro Bowlers/HOF guys that Dallas had at that stage.

They have an easier divisional schedule, and they have the advantage of free agency that Dallas didn't have.

Again though, I think the ascent of the team this year is tied to the offensive line, but from late this year on out, it's tied to Bortles' development.

6 -7 wins this season is a realistic goal that if met, will satisfy me as far as the progression goes.

6-7 wins is a reasonable expectation for 2014.  Anything beyond that is gravy.

Agreed completely on this point with you and FBT, though it begs the question if the Jaguars win 5 this season, will that be considered a disappointment, even though it represents improvement from last year's record?

I think Doss was primarily a ST guy who was a fall back in case they didn't get the receivers they wanted in this draft.

I think now that the team landed both Lee and Robinson in the second round, Doss' spot became a lot less secure...and Copeland's presence doesn't help him, either.

We disagree on Shorts.  I think Shorts is as close to a lock at this point as there is at any position.

The DT from Cal would likely back up Miller.  I think Hood will be a rotational guy for Marks.  I think between FA and the draft and the UDFAs, the Jaguars can have decent quality in their first and second lines.

You respond to a blanket statement. I responded to you with some caveats, then you inserted some caveats. Thats a discussion isnt it? You seem to be insinuating that somehow this is bad.

Someone makes a blanket statement. There are some elements of truth to them, some elements of mistruths and that's why we changed the perameters to have a more in depth discussion.

We can change them again if you like.

How would Cecil Shorts feel if Bortles starts and plays like crap, while Henne is his mediocre self in practice?

Quote:Just to be different, Bortles.

Understand that in my saying that Shorts isn't a lock to make the roster, if multiple WR step up in camp/ PS of the Hurns/ Doss/ Copeland group....I don't mean that the Jags will simply cut him. THAT will not happen in any scenario. I'm thinking pre cuts trade, if the scenario plays out like that.

Also, I was asking which DT gets cut in that scenario?

Difficult to say, because there weren't too many good guys behind Miller.

Possibly Alualu gets cut because of him.  Possibly one of the lesser guys.

However, Jaguars.com roster lists him as weighing 255.  That is obviously false.

Bortles' situation is very similar to that of Matt Ryan in his rookie season. I'm rooting for him to take the job from Henne like Ryan did from Redman. The team around him is similar to the 2008 Falcons, so I don't see him being "ruined" if he does play.

Ryan was more pro ready than Bortles.

IIRC, not only was Ryan a senior, but BC ran a pro style offense.

Bortles was drafted as a junior, and while UCF had elements of a pro style offense, it wasn't as much so as BC's offense that Ryan played under.

The ucf offense is similar to the jags so that will help.

I agree that Ryan was more polished. I was speaking more from the state of the franchise/talent around him prospective and the level of QB they are competing against for the starting spot.

Oh yeah...

one UDFA I forgot could make the team:  Craig Loston, the S out of LSU.

Maybe he takes Prosinski's spot.

I will agree that Bortles definitely has that Ryan type feel as far as Caldwell's franchise guy. (like when Atlanta took Ryan).

I mentioned him above in my list. I expect him to beat out Prosinski without too much of a competition there.

 You are right.  Mea culpa.

Not that I take joy in wishing someone becomes unemployed, but I'll be happy once Prosinski gets cut.

Prosinski is one of those guys who is holding on to a roster spot because he's somehow managed to be just good enough.  That won't fly this year.  I would imagine he's circling the drain.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

He's the new Sunshine (Nick Sorensen,) but he'll have to learn to play ST as well as Nick did if he wants to have a career that long, and it's probably going to have to continue somewhere else just the same way.

He's raised eyebrows, which is what you need to do when in his situation (UDFA.)

He won't have enough time to do that here...fortunately.

Could we have 12-14 rookies make the 53 man roster this year?!?

Locks:

Bortles

Lee

Robinson

Linder

Colvin

Probable:

T. Smith

C. Smith

Possible:

Bowanko

Johnson

Loston

Reynolds

Jensen

Coleman

Shatley

Morris

Copeland

That's omitting several other UDFAs.

I won't be disappointed if they only win 6 as long as the progress continues to be clear.  I think winning 8 is not outside of the realm of possibility if things go well.  I'm sure the early part of season is going to be a downer, we have some rough games early on and the OL will take a while to gel.  I expect them to perform much better later in the season as some of the rookies start to make contributions.  But even if they do only win 6, it should be an exciting season to watch the foundation being put into place.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.
