Bands that are good in studio, but suck live

#21

Quote:Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction. Saw them both on NIN's "farewell" tour in 2009. NIN's production was underwhelming and their sound left much to be desired--how did they end up opening for JA again? JA was just flat terrible. Dave Navarro looked disinterested at best and played like it, and Perry Farrell was just annoyingly over the top on everything. We left halfway through "Ocean Size", which was their main set closer. Couldn't be troubled to fight through traffic over whatever encore they had planned.

Saw both at the first Lollapalooza, and neither were that impressive back then.  Funny that it was Jane's "farewell tour" at the time.

Quote:I love Metallica but I always thought they sucked live. I saw them open up for Ozzy during the Master of Puppets tour when Cliff was still alive. They were pretty badarse then but that was before I was into them.

Then I saw them during the Monsters of Rock tour in '88 and during the black album tour in '92 or so and those last two times I saw them I thought they were horrible.

I chalk that up to Lars.

I've seen them a couple times, and enjoyed the show, even if he can't keep a beat.  The rest of the band still plays well and they still generate a wealth of energy with their crowds.  I think those were the Black and ReLoad tours.

That's weird, I saw them on their Death Magnetic tour (I'm too young to have had a chance to see them previously) and they were great.

Lars started wearing earpieces around the Load/Reload album, which has improved his timekeeping (or at least, lets him hear the band better.)  He still isn't steady by any means, but better than he used to be.

I saw them at Download in the UK the year Lars was ill and they had to get a bunch of drummers from other bands to fill in.

Metallica with Joey from Slipknot still makes me smile.

Quote:In their heyday, they were one of the best at sounding like their album.  When I saw them 89-90, they were so tight I thought they were pulling a Milli Vanilli.

I'm not putting him on this list, but when I saw the Rob Zombie show a few weeks back I thought they were dubbing in the music. I was getting upset, but I started really paying attention to the guitarist and drummer, John Five and Ginger Fish I think, and yes, they were in fact playing. Granted, we were right behind the sound board so that's just about the best spot for acoustics, but Super Charger Heaven sounded like someone had popped in the CD. Unreal sound when it was heard live.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Trivium are probably the worst live band I've ever seen. Just pure noise.

Iron Maiden were disappointing too, but I was told by the people I was with who had seen them a bunch of times that they are usually awesome, so it must have been a bad night.

When I saw the Crue it was later, like in the 2000's....Around when Fat Vince was back after his vacation from the band for a few albums.

I wish I would have seen them back on the Kickstart tour.

It wasn't with Led Zeppelin, but Robert Plant was pretty disappointing the last time I saw him in concert.

This reminded me of a pretty funny concert story.  Journey was doing a world tour when I was in high school, and they came to town.  Their opening act was a band called Glass Tiger.  They were a one hit wonder in the 80's, and their song wasn't very good to begin with.  It's rare to see a band actually booed off the stage, but after 1 1/2 songs, the band was so bad that they ended their set early.

When Journey came out, Steve Perry actually apologized and explained they were a late addition to the tour after their original opening act had to bail due to illness.

The next time Journey came to town, Cheap Trick opened up for them.  Much improved.  Both bands put on great shows.

A few bands I've seen live who put on great shows include U2 (seen them several times), REM, the Eagles, and the Smithereens.

The first time I saw U2 was at the old Civic Auditorium during the Boy tour.  They were still a rising band at the time.  We went down the day of the concert to pick up a couple of extra tickets for friends.  Bono was sitting on a wall outside.  Nobody paid him any mind.  My friend saw him and pointed it out to the group.  We walked over and he autographed anything we put in front of him.  Nice guy.  One of my best friends growing up is a huge U2 fan.  He still has his autographed algebra book.  In that particular concert, the Alarm opened up for U2.  When we were leaving the show, the entire band (The Alarm) was in back selling t shirts and cassettes.

I remember Glass Tiger, their one hit was Dont Forget me when I'm Gone, it had Bryan Adams do some backing vocals. Surprised a crowd that was there to see Journey would somehow be so down on a band like Glass Tiger, they were making similar poppy music at the time. Do you remember if there was something specific that made the people boo Glass Tiger off stage? Of all the concerts I've seen, I've never seen an opening act booed off stage. I mean sometimes it was to the point that no one really cared about the opening act and what they were playing so there wasn't much applause for some of those acts, but to actually be booed off stage?....

U2 were really good back in the day. I actually wish I'd have seen the Alarm, though. I think they were an underrated band.

Oh, and regarding Led Zep....don't be shy, they do (did) suck live. At least usually. Remember Live Aid?? Horrible.

I disagree with that statement big time. I may be bias because they're my favorite band and I've seen them 5 or 6 times, but all those times I've seen them, they get a good crowd and get them moving.

The timing was bad.  The vocals were bad.  It was a pretty comprehensive failure.  When things started flying at the stage, they decided they were done.

By the time Live Aid rolled around, the band wasn't even together.  They'd been broken up for nearly half a dozen years after Bonzo's death, so no wonder it wasn't good.  The only band members present were Plant and Page, and they hadn't rehearsed with the stand-ins.

I understand that....and they weren't alone, as a number of bands had performances at Live Aid that they'd rather have forgotten...

I was speaking of Plant and Page in specific anyway. Plants vocals were horrible and Page's playing wasn't all that great that day either. But as said, I've seen many live clips of Zeppelin from even back in the 70's when they all were there, and a lot of times it wasn't all that great, certainly paled to the studio Zeppelin.

What were they doing? Untying their sweaters from around their waists and throwing them at Glass Tiger??

Page has always been a bit on the sloppy side to me, both live and in studio.

Speaking of Live Aid performances that sucked....and I'm a fan of this band...this was easily their worst live performance ever:
