I saw both the Who and the Stones in about 1989 on their respective tour-to-end-all-tours.  The Who tried too hard, the Stones not hard enough, but being as they were both already old as hell, I guess they did OK.

 

Rush are great in concert, but I did myself the disservice of seeing them twice in 1987 - once in Charlotte, and again in Jax.  Here's the kicker:  they did the exact same show.  Same songs, same order, same spurious between-song dialogue.  Really tight set, but man, not exactly spontaneous.

 

I, too, found Aerosmith and Metallica underwhelming.

Regarding those Rush shows.....how far part were they? (time wise)

I understand that....and they weren't alone, as a number of bands had performances at Live Aid that they'd rather have forgotten...

 

I was speaking of Plant and Page in specific anyway. Plants vocals were horrible and Page's playing wasn't all that great that day either. But as said, I've seen many live clips of Zeppelin from even back in the 70's when they all were there, and a lot of times it wasn't all that great, certainly paled to the studio Zeppelin. 

 

They have a naturally raw sound, which isn't the same as not playing well.

 

I'm surprised you like the Stones live, but not Zeppelin as they are much better live than the Stones IMO.

Well, I said the Stone during the Steel Wheels show I caught was excellent, and it was. They were real tight. However, the Stones of recent years haven't been very good, in the live footage, I've seen. Then again, they are ancient at this point.

I saw rock icon Iggy Pop at Coachella in April 2001 and as excited as I was to see him, it was so bad I went to check out a different band by the 4th song of the set. Sloppy and just bad.

Really surprised to hear that about Rush. I saw them a few times, last on the Roll the Bones tour and they were very tight. One of the better live shows I have seen.

 

He never said Rush "sounded" bad....he just said they essentially repeated the show.

Adam Ant.  He played a music festival here years ago where there were a dozen other bands.  He got out there and had to lip sync his entire set.  He was so out of time it wasn't even funny.  When he was booed, he promptly gave the audience the finger and left.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I can see the disappointment in that. They certainly have a deep catalog to choose from.

 

A lot of the old bands don't change things up much.  It's usually the same old stuff, unless there's a new album to sprinkle in.  Sometimes they'll tweak the order of some of the encores or switch one or two out, but not often.

 

Some encores and old song medleys (Eagles, Genesis, etc.) fans have come to expect.  So, that's why they do it.

 

Besides, it's probably been 30-40 years or so since they've played some songs.

I liked that the Stones would have fans vote a song into the playlist. My wife's mom taught her how to do the shag by listening to Zeppelin's Boogie with Stu. She met Robert Plant and Jimi Page on tour and shared the story. They added it to the set list just for her. Some older bands will do that. Rush certainly could, though I don't expect many new performances of The Necromancer or By-Tor and the Snow Dog.

Thats also another bad show you've seen where the audience essentially boo'ed the performer off stage....

 

Thats amazing because I have seen a lot of shows and never have seen a band boo'ed off stage or even had any reception but positive towards the band performing. I guess I'm lucky that I've never really seen a bad show or even real bad opening act.

It's been quite a few years.  The first time was back in the late 80's in Albuquerque, NM, second time was in 1989 in Memphis, Tn.  I like their music but they sound horrible live.

Wow, well, that surprises me because I saw Aerosmith a few times, one of which being (1989-1990) Tour supporting their album Pump....they sounded great at the show I went to.

I dunno.  I've seen a lot of bands/singers live from different genre's over the years.  Another couple of notables that sucked were Hank Williams Jr. and Dwight Yoakam.  Of course, in both cases with them they were simply too "messed up" to perform.
