They cant both be true.  If they have decided to sit him for the year just because, then whether or not he is ready wont matter.

 

Let me make this as simple to understand as possible for you because clearly it's causing you a great deal of confusion.

 

Bortles will not be the starter on opening day.

 

Bortles will more than likely not be the starter at any point this season unless Henne is injured.

 

Bortles will more than likely get some snaps during the season to allow him the opportunity to show how he has progressed.  From there, the coaches and GM will make the determination as to when he'll assume the role of starting QB, which odds are, will be in 2015, again barring injury.

Gus and Dave are just downplaying the possibility of him playing right away so there aren't unrealistic expectations.  It has nothing to do with whether or not there will be an actual competition.

You can train someone to cook fries at McDonald's in 4 months, but grownups with hard grown up jobs need more than 4 months to properly learn how to do their jobs.    Being an NFL QB is an exceptionally hard job.    That's why there's only about ~10-15 good ones walking the face of the earth at any particular time.

When has Henne ever been on a quality team? Last season he had decent yards and by the end of the season who was he throwing the ball to? I guess it's easy to bag on the guy, but i prefer to have hope that maybe he has some talent this year to be better.

After listening to today's post OTA presser, Gus had good things to say about Bortles. He says that he's improving. He also says he looks like a rookie. Probably the most important thing he said is that Blake will look much better once he is comfortable with the playbook, and the plays become second nature.

 

I think there lies the reasoning behind sitting Bortles, and why there is little if any chance of it changing anytime soon. This team wants him to intimately know this offense and to have a thorough knowledge of the playbook before there is any thought to putting him into the line of fire. On top of that, there are some coaching items that the team wants to work with Blake on and correct prior to him taking command of the offense.

 

I think it's smart. I love the approach.

 

More than anything, it certainly appears to lay to rest the idea that things are going to miraculously change overnight. They have a plan and a roadmap for this, and it appears that they are going to stick to it.

Yes the coaches did imply that they want to sit BB#5 for the better of his progress and the team. But the reality of it is that the coaches are so impressed w/BB#5's knowledge of the playbook and his command of the huddle that If/When Henne falters, BB#5 will be implemented, again, for the better of the team...


As I see it, w/the new defensive scheme of "OTTO" and possibly more. If/When the D is playing Lights Out and the O is/possibly faultering, BB#5 will take the reins and maintain an Firm Grip...

Henne is and always will be a QB that will lose it for the team. He'll play good to get you in position but he'll NUT UP when it counts...

I choose to look at 2014 and not focus on the past when i really don't know the dynamics of what he had. I player doesn't make a team. How about have some excitement and hope that this year he plays the best he can. Trent Dilfer did it one year, so anything is possible.

I will believe it when I see it, Henne has never shown that he is a reliable starting QB. If he is the starter all year we go 6-10 while much more competitive then last year. But without good starting QB play and a very young team that still has holes on it will be another long year.

but also it's possible that we might only go 5-11, or even 4-12. Actually, even though the 4-12 record wouldn't sound so good if we get that while not getting blown out, then even the 4-12 would be an improvement...

Nevertheless, it comes down to this; show it to me in real games that count. Until then, all I can say is talk is cheap and we've heard plenty of it for years now....
