This team doesn't even remotely compare to the steelers in Roethlisberger's rookie season.

It does, however compare to the 2008 Falcons and the 2012 Dolphins. Each of those teams had a rookie QB start from day one. I certainly have no problem with sitting Bortles if he isn't ready. It's the only logical thing to do. That being said, if he is ready, I am not afraid of him being ruined either.

ehh... thats what david lahm keep jamming down listeners throat every time he gets infront of a mic, so for that reason alone i disagree with you lol.

The conversation was about the comparison between Bortles and Roethlisberger.

The Atlanta comparison is probably closest to the situation here. The Falcons were coming off a 4-12 season, and was re-tooling the offense and a tired defense. I'm not sure they had quite the roster purge the Jags did when Caldwell took over, but clearly the formula is similar enough thanks to the common thread he represents.

I wouldn't even entirely blame the coach and front office. The original plan was for Gabbert to be as far down the depth chart as Bortles is expected to be now. Garrard was the Henne figure, Luke McCown was Stanzi, Gabbert was Bortles. Then Garrard's injury issues got him cut at the last minute, thrusting McCown into the starting position. And McCown turned out to be a complete disaster. Yes, a coaching staff further removed from the hot seat could have stuck it out with McCown, but Gabbert being thrown to the wolves was as far from the plan as you can get.

My opinion:

Naming Henne the starter elevates his confidence, helps him do his very best, without over-reaching his natural abilities. This is going to help Henne be the best he can be.
Saying Bortles is going to sit a year tests his desire to be a starting QB in the NFL. If he continues to push, rather than accept being third on the depth chart lets you know he's got that competitive fire a franchise QB needs.
Beating out Henne shouldn't be "difficult" but it should be more difficult than beating out Ricky Stanzi. You should at least be guaranteed a Chad Henne level of performance.
I'd absolutely take Chad Henne over Ryan Fitzpatrick. I think Henne is a gamer, just misunderstood is all. I think Fitzpatrick is a 9 life cat living on borrowed time. His level of play is comparable to what you've got with Henne, but even less reason to believe he can be a competitive for seven or eight games. Regardless of the team around them, I'd bet Henne gets to four wins before Fitzpatrick.

• Perhaps surprising to see Chad Henne lead in success and accuracy percentages while posting a 116.7 rating. The pistol may get more play in Jacksonville in 2014.

Very interesting. While it is a very small sample size (160 yds of production on 23 dropbacks) the quick screen was successful from the pistol in the 3 or 4 games they utilized it. Ace Sanders catching screens out of the backfield definitely factored into this statistic.

Considering how heavily they lean on stats to make decisions, the pistol should be a no brainer.
