We have seriously overrated Justin Blackmon

Superjville....the thread title here just sucks.

If you had instead titled it as a question, well that would have been more appropriate. As is, its sensationalist garbage.

I don't think anyone is proclaiming him as a top 5 WR. Clearly there are many receivers that are better than him. That doesn't diminish what he meant to this offense the last two years though. Fact is his sample size is so small that all we can call his performance is "flash" of what he can be.

Blackmon minus the substance issue = elite WR.   No question in my mind.  He'd rank in the top 5-7 WR in the league every season IMO if he were to clean up and stay healthy.

ESPECIALLY if he has an above average QB throwing him the ball.

I recently had a Patriots fan tell me unsolicited that he thought Blackmon might be the best receiver in the league if he'd quit screwing around. It's not just hype from the Jags fanbase. Many, many see his potential.  I don't think I'm overrating him one iota.

Yep, and that Patriots fan was right.

I really really REALLY wish Blackmon would get the help he needs, get his life back together and come back here and be the great player he can be.

He is a top 5 talent and all you have to do is watch him play to know that. Using stats only shows so much. He had no QB and the QB had no time and no Oline and we were always playing from behind because there was no defense. Despite all that he still did enough to create this argument.

I think Blackmon could be a top 5 WR in this league.  Give Blackmon a good Qb and strong running game he becomes an instant superstar.   He has speed, power, great hands, and just showed that he can take over a game. If he can clean up his off the field issues, there is no doubt in my mind he is an elite talent.  Unfortunately he is either a drug addict or very very stupid. On the field is not his issue, it's off the field.  You would have to be blind to not see his ability. He's a double thread.  He not only has enough speed to beat you deep he also strong enough to break through tackles. (big yac)

IN 4 games last year he had 415 receiving yards.  He was averaging a 100 yards a game.

And that was with Chad Henne.

Quote:He did play a whole season, in his rookie year.

You can call it downplaying, but I call it putting perspective on the situation.

He's got a knack for getting shut out in games and being very ordinary.

When the matchup is right for him, yes - you can feed him the ball and he'll produce.  He hasn't shown that he can be relied on on the field as well as off the field.

Lol, we are using a rookie season to say whether someone is elite or not?

Last year in 4 games he had 29 catches for 415 yards.  If he kept that same production up over the course of the season, we are looking at 126 catches for 1660 yards.  That's pretty elite to me.

His line for his four games in 2013.

5              136

14           190

6              58

4              31

He was nowhere near being shut out.  His worst game was against arguable the top defense in the NFL.

I feel like people are trying to make themselves feel better by saying he wasnt very good.  He was good...with the potential to be really good.

Who cares?

The guy is banned from pro football, the team has moved on, the reports indicate he isn't fixing whatever problems need to be fixed and unless a minor miracle happens, he is done, finished, over.

Debating whether or not he is overrated or underrated is like debating how hot an 80 year old was in their prime.

Stats mean nothing... Justin's talent is not overrated...Most receivers don't develop till the 3rd season, and he had flashes in his rookie year when most rookies do nothing. His stats are going to tell only one side of it... like week offense line, run first offense, Can only get passes down field from Henne cause Gabbert doesn't look downfield, and double teams because teams know he is our best receiver. anyone can pick and choose stats to make their argument...You may not like him but his potential is off the charts.

Well, I'm holding onto hope that the fact that they haven't done so means they still have hope that he could get past this....

Either that, or they are smart enough to realize that you don't just drop this level of talent for another team to possibly reap the benefits from for nothing.

There is no benefit in cutting him right now, they won't be paying him anything anyway.

Theres no benefit in cutting him "later", either.

The only time that it would make sense for the Jags to simply release Blackmon would be if the league bans him for life with no chance of re-instatement.

Pretty much my thinking as well, there's a reason why they haven't cut him. I'd guess it's the latter since they seen to have moved on from him based on their rhetoric.

Agreed.  While suspended, he is not being paid and not counting as a roster spot.  There is no reason to cut him at this time.

Yeah, we agree on that. The team has approached it the correct way, you have to bring in guys to where you aren't dependent on Justin, but still retain his rights so that when he earns reinstatement he can be back and contributing. If he messes up again after that, then at least you know you have some dependable guys behind him.

Actually there is a benefit to cutting him right now. If the Jaguars cut him right now it would pretty much guarantee his career ends and he never goes on to be another team's Chris Carter.

If he's cut now any team signing him would have to put up with him serving the rest of his suspension on their inactive roster before they even got a shot to work with him.

I doubt the team cuts him any time soon.  There's no reason to do so.  He's not eating up a roster spot.  He's not costing them any money.  They have the luxury of being able to wait to see IF he can get reinstated, and then when he's back, they can make the determination as to whether he's really put his issues behind him.  If they don't trust he has, odds are they'll be forced to cut him because it's unlikely any team is going to offer anything for him based on his track record.  They may be willing to take a flyer by signing him, but I doubt they'd give up anything of value to secure him.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
