Seriously, this article is spot on.  The policy is garbage.  When a player needs help the most, the league severs all contact and leaves them on their own.  It's a stupid policy.

I would seriously doubt that they have left JB to deal with this on his own. I would be willing to bet the exact opposite is true. I would think that they have recommended and offered JB some of the best options in the world that exist for someone requiring the help that he does. On top of that they have publicly acknowledged that he is still welcome and will have a job if he is reinstated.

The rest is on him, and he does not appear to be fulfilling his end of the deal.

 

 To your point FBT of the leagues drug policy, do you feel the same about the entire drug free workplace requirements that are in place for other occupations as well? Personally I believe what a person does on their own time is their business as long as it does not hinder their performance at work so in that regard the leagues policy is garbage. The fact that he is required to 100% abstain from alcohol completely is ludicrous. There are civil laws in place to deal with perpetual law breakers as it pertains to alcohol. Unfortunately for JB he is relegated to the rules set by and agreed to by the league and his own union but I suppose the union is a farce as well as there is not another choice of employers for their members. Conform or be gone I reckon.

The story has made its rounds. I think the Jags taking this approach is absolutely the best move possible. Hope for the best and plan for the worst. Like or not, Blackmon is still the best receiver on this team the moment he gets reinstated unless Lee or Robinson prove to me otherwise. He isn't even making a whole lot of money either so why not keep a diamond level player through his rookie contract?

 

Big thumbs up on Caldwell/Kahn for their decision making regarding blackmon.

Cecil is the definition of a decent player that is worthy of an NFL roster spot but not worthy of being the cornerstone of your WR corps. As such, With his value inflated due to being THE guy at the WR spot, You deal him before hes brought back down to his actual value. IMO, Its the difference between a 2nd/3rd and a 4th/5th. How does blackmon make him more "tradeable"? Because if Blackmon makes the unlikely transformation back into an NFL player, Hes going to dominate. Robinson/Lee I suspect will make it very hard for shorts to see the field.

 

Also, I stand corrected on your 1st point. Him leaving Jacksonville is probably his best bet short-term anyways.

No reason that they should be releasing Blackmon, at all at that point. 

 

The only and I mean only situation that Blackmon should be released by the Jags is if he gets suspended by the NFL for life.

No matter what he's doing, I doubt he's maintaining his conditioning to the level that would be expected from an NFL player.  Especially if he's been involved in any sort of rehab.

 

I don't think he'd completely abandon his training regimen, but it won't be nearly as rigorous as it needs to be for him to get on the field.

That's what we hope will be the case.  But, as is the case with addiction, you just don't know how someone is going to deal with that.  Some people will throw everything away in life for the sake of the next drink or fix.   Hopefully that's not the case here.
