The offense that occurred after he was drafted put him in the program.  That was his punishment.  It did allow the Jaguars to build wording into the deal to cover them in the event something like we're seeing now occurred, but it didn't impact the overall bottom line in his deal.  His appeal was denied because he hadn't modified his behavior at all despite the expectation that he would.  All of this is on Blackmon from the perspective of who is to blame. 

 

Where I take issue with this entire process is the way they several all communication with the team.  There needs to be a way for a player to work with the team to get the necessary help required to get him beyond this.  Left to his own devices, he's going to be less motivated to do what needs to be done.  He needs a more regimented environment. 

 

I also think there's overkill in how the league handles substance abuse situations.  If it's not a performance enhancing drug, but it's something that is legal, I think they're overstepping their boundaries for what they can do. I know it's that overbearing approach that ultimately got Matt Jones run out of the league.  He was in the program, got suspended for the cocaine incident, and nailed again because he had a beer while playing golf with buddies.  Really?  That's the tipping point?  It's ridiculous how the league handles these situations, and even more so that the NFLPA signed off on this approach.  That whole process needs to be revisited and a new process endorsed because this just doesn't work.

 

Agreed.  The team has a greater vested interest in the player than either the league or the NFLPA.  Teams should be allowed to contract independent health care professionals to administer whatever care the player requires.  Additionally, the health care professionals should be able to brief the team and league of the player's progress while keeping medical information private in accordance with HIPAA rules.  I concede, that's a fine line, but with disclosure waivers signed by the player it should be achievable.  Almost anything is better than the system currently in place.

Teams have millions invested in the players already. This is simply a way to protect that investment at a time when it's needed the most.  I don't think the league or the NFLPA has really put much thought into the damage they're doing with some of these kids who need that structure.

TMZ isn't going all the way to OK to track down a guy who would be considered a minor celebrity at best.

 

Besides, I highly doubt he would tell them anything. If he wanted people to know what is going on he would release a statement.

 

Obviously he doesn't and that's his right.

 

TMZ Sports is a B level media source at best, they had a video asking Lee and Bortles about alligators in the airport. They can't get a college student to try and do an interview? I'm sure he wouldn't say anything, but still you do some research.

 

I'm not expecting any info from the NFL or Jaguars, the CBA says they can't provide any. What I would expect is some type of leaked info or investigation done by some media outlet that happens all the time for every other suspension in the NFL. I was surprised with all the info the Jags have given about not expecting him back and him not contacting Shorts. You would think someone would want to find out what was not looking good and get the story on it.

 

Either the NFL & Jags are great at keeping everything secret or no one cares enough to ask about or leak anything.

I just figured it was interesting since there have been articles recently saying that Cecil Shorts and the Jags have reached out to Blackmon and have not heard anything from him at all.

Im really confused in this thread, how is publicly disclosing his status on the team a violation of HIPPA? Either say you have not had any contact with Blackmon, or just simply state he is in treatment. They dont have to give specifics. 

 

It's pretty cut and dry at this point, either the team knows why he isnt speaking with them, and they refuse to admit it for whatever reason, or they could have just simply decide to have no interest in the whereabouts of Blackmon until he is serious about re-joining the team. Either way, they dont have nothing to lose by saying something.

We know his status on the LEAGUE violation.  He's suspended indefinitely. 

 

They can't even release the fact that he's in treatment.  They can't discuss why he's been suspended.  They've got their hands tied by HIPAA laws.  The team may very well know if the player has conveyed what is going on to them.  However, they are not able to release any confidential information including medical conditions or treatments unless he signs off consenting to them doing so.

The 1st one is a violation, you can't release that he is in treatment. They could say he is fulfilling the league requirements, but they couldn't say what he is doing.
