Some truckers and professional drivers do indeed have the attitude that they own the road and that anyone else on the interstate is merely an obstacle to them doing their jobs.  I've seen that attitude in action many times on the interstate.

From what I've read, the truck driver of course is at 100% fault for the incident. I have an uncle who is a truck driver, delivers mail up and down the east coast. I remember him telling me once that sometimes, a lot of companies put such a time restraint on a lot of these drivers so much, that 4-5 hours of sleep a day can seem like average. If that's true, something needs to be regulated to ensure that these drivers are getting enough sleep to operate these rigs.

It is regulated.  There are rest requirements in place for over the road drivers who are regularly doing long hauls.

It's supposed to be universal I believe.  At check points and those types of things they have to have logs that show their driving times/sleep schedule to make sure those types of things dont happen.

There are federal guidelines as to how many hours over the road drivers can go consecutively without rest. 

 

If this guy was indeed up for 24 hours driving, that opens a whole new can of worms come lawsuit time.

Actually half of my grandfathers immediate family was killed in a car wreck in the 20's... four brothers, his father and a cousin. I'm thinking they were piled up like cordwood in that car because three others survived it...all from the same car.

You always hate to hear about accidents like these.  There are laws regulating truckers, but most of them have to work when they aren't supposed to if they want to make any money.  I think the regulations have caused more stress, than they've helped relieve.  A mandatory ten hour rest, and the mandatory 34 hour rest between shifts sound like good ideas on paper.  But not so much in practice.
